coopsgirl
Hey April, We got by unscathed here in Central Texas. We didn?t even get any rain out of it which we could have used. All of my family still lives in SE Texas in and around Houston and they are all without power but there was no major damage to their persons or their homes thank goodness. We brought my grandma up here last Thursday and she?ll stay with us until they get their power back on. Theresa has relatives in Louisiana and I hope they made it through okay. The best thing about living in this part of the state is we rarely get anything from hurricanes. I've been through enough of them in my younger days to have had my fill. It was crazy watching it on tv and seeing the water come up over the sea wall in Galveston. It was built in ?02 (1902 that is ) and at 17 ft, it was high enough to withstand all hurricanes until Ike. Houston is an absolute mess and the whole city is pretty much shut down. I saw some film on the news of the downtown area and it looks like a bomb went off; broken glass all over the streets and the skyscrapers look so strange with all the windows gone. It looks like a ghost town. That?s so hard to wrap my mind around. The Astros were in the middle of a homestand there and yesterday they managed to fly out to Milwaukee and used Miller Park to play their series with the Cubs. They were the only plane to fly out of Houston yesterday and one of our announcers put his feet up on the desk in the broadcast booth so we could see his mismatched shoes. He was joking about how he had to get ready in the dark and he figured he wasn?t the only one of their bunch with that same problem .
MissGoddess
Unbelievable! I haven't watched much news lately but it sure sounds like Ike lived up to his name. I hope the power gets back on soon for the folks down there. I'm glad to hear everyone's safe (so far). I am hoping Theresa checks in tomorrow. I grew up around Dallas so there was never any hurricane worries, just tornados mostly and we were fortunate enough that we never experienced a bad one of those. These are unsettling times to be certain.

She made more films in Europe than in Hollywood but in a documentary her brother (Maximillian, also an actor) made about her, she said that Gary was her favorite Hollywood actor out of the ones she worked with. She said he was very calm and seemed in control of everything and she liked that. Her life was a little chaotic at times so I can see why she enjoyed working with someone like that. I don't think I would have ever recognized her, but I am definitely familiar with Maximillian Schell. I think he was still acting as "recently" as 1990 (in *The Freshman* )
coopsgirl
More great pics! Those big ones make great wallpapers. Here's another video that I know Theresa especially will love since she suggested the song. It really is perfect for him.

coopsgirl
Hey now, I don't need another baseball movie that will leave me in tears . I got upset yesterday when I saw on MLB.com that Derek Jeter had either tied or passed (I don't remember which) Lou Gehrig for most hits by a Yankee in Yankee Stadium. I really, really don't like him as pretty much everybody knows and when I told my mom and grandma that once I got home they both had the same reaction as me. We even made pretty much the same face, it was pretty funny. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree I guess . Jeter ain't fit to wash Lou's jock and that's all I have to say about that . butterscotchgreer
yes but if you can watch every other baseball movie there is and buy them on DVD, then you at least need to watch the Stratton Story once... just once for me please!!!!!!! its a beautiful movie and junie and jimmy make such a cute couple. im gonna get you to watch that movie one of these days and when you do, youre gonna love it, im tellin ya. i saw that about Derek Jeter....grandma told me and i could just see your face in my head and started to giggle...im sorry i couldnt help it! thats cute about gayla and your grandma. *Jeter ain't fit to wash Lou's jock and that's all I have to say about that* thats......way too much information than i needed to know sis. heehee! CineMaven
From NYC: Riding the #1 bus home, as it traveled along Madison Avenue it passed a fashion boutique on 69th Street displaying two gigantic 1930's photos of GARY COOPER. He looked gorgeous.
coopsgirl
Oh I?m so jealous Cine Maven!! That?s so cool though that they had pics of him up. They better watch out though or they could cause some major traffic accidents . Speaking of good looking gents from the 30s, I?m totally crushing on Charles Farrell. Wow, that sounded really cheesy, but oh well ! I watched *Seventh Heaven* a couple months ago and I?ve been hooked ever since. I think I?m sensing a pattern here. I see Gary looking all homeless and scroungy in *Meet John Doe* and totally fall for him. Then I see Charles Farrell playing a guy who works in the sewer in *Seventh Heaven*, and whammo!, I?m a goner. I guess I like ?em dirty . Charles totally had a Gary thing working too and that?s a big part of it. They were born the same year, Charles was only one inch shorter, and they both had a natural sweetness to them and always played good guys. Now, no one will ever take Gary?s top spot, but I?d totally cheat on him with this guy!! Here?s a cute pic of them together at a party in ?33. I need to crop out Leslie Howard and then just pretend that I?m sitting there in between them .
MissGoddess
I don't think men have ever been as elegant and manly at the same time since they were in the 1930s and 1940s. Just look at those guys, it drives me crazy!
coopsgirl
Very well said April. When I found that pic of Charles this morning I got flushed all over :x. I can?t wait to get the *Murnau/Borzage at Fox* set coming out in Dec (I?ve already preordered it). It?s got 12 films and a doc about the directors and Charles is in seven of them. Apparently a popular theme in ?29 was to have good looking men cavorting around in the water. Of course this could be b/c once you get a good looking man wet, he gets even better looking. Gary had that wonderful scene in *Wolf Song* near the water that I wish we could see, but at least we have the pic. And Charles has a scene in *The River* which I have (the fragments which survive will be in the set) and he?s skinny dipping. You can?t see anything naughty , but what you can see is pretty nice . I will definitely be in *Seventh Heaven* with this set :x.
MissGoddess
The Murnau/Borzage set is definintely on my "wish list" for one of these days and I'm very happy Fox decided to do it at all. They are certainly the best now at issuing classics in a quality and dedicated manner. As you will probably get it first, let us know what you think of it! I've seen *Seventh Heaven* and *Street Angel* and loved both of them, but it's probably been more than ten years now. Yet, I never forgot the impression those films made on me. I love Borzage's emotionalism, he was a true romantic.
coopsgirl
Out of the ones in the set, I?ve seen *The River*, *Seventh Heaven*, *Street Angel*, and *City Girl*. I have *Sunrise* but haven?t watched it yet. It didn?t grab me the first time I tried to watch it but I was kinda tired so I need to give it another go. I really liked all those with *Seventh Heaven* being my fave. It would be wonderful if *The River* was complete but the beginning and part of the end reels are missing. There is enough left however to get the gist of the story and they have filled in as much of the missing parts as they could with stills and additional title cards. This is a very sensual and quite erotic film with Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan (who also stars with Charles in *City Girl* ). Mary was a sweet city girl in *City Girl* , but in *The River* she a mysterious vamp and she played both parts very well. She works her wiles on Charles who is very na?ve about women and more like a big kid than a man. He ends up missing his train and has to stay put for the winter. He doesn?t stay with Mary at first b/c he likes her but isn?t sure what she?s really up to since she has a boyfriend and he?s also a little nervous around her. However, when the blizzard gets bad he goes to check on her. She?s writhing around on her settee like thing in a slinky pair of pajamas and at one point she grabs her chest acting like she touching her heart but clearly she?s got hold of something else and then she grabs his hand and puts it smack dab on her chest too, so basically it?s a fondling scene. Then later on Charles is fished out of the icy river and she has to lay down beside him and rub him all over to warm him up. I?m getting a little warmed up now just describing it . It?s really an interesting film with beautiful imagery.
JackFavell
I think that scene you described should be just the thing for those of us braving the cool weather right now! I am warmer already. How about you, Miss G? I think you should give Sunrise another try. It's funny you mentioned it, because this morning when I saw your pics of Charlie, all I could think of was George O'Brien in Sunrise. He is not as fine looking as Charles Farrell or Gary, but I think in Sunrise, he gives a very moving performance. He usually portrayed good guys as well, so I couldn't help thinking of him. None of the photos I have found of him show him to advantage, but I still think he was good-looking.
JackFavell
Hey, I'll take Leslie Howard...
coopsgirl
I will definitely give *Sunrise* another try although I do have a problem with the main plot point. Her husband tries to kill her and she takes him back anyway!! Just repeat to myself: It's only a movie, It's only a movie. Some people just don't photograph well. They may look perfectly fine in person or on film, but never quite the same in a picture. Maybe that's what was going on with George O'Brien. As for Leslie, you can keep him . MissGoddess
*The River* certainly does sound very heat-radiating! I think I have seen City Girl but that is one I am not completely sure about. That such films are being talked about and being given a dignified DVD release is something like a miracle when you think about it. It's so encouraging in the context of all the other silents and early talkies out there waiting to be rediscovered next.
