Any Gary Cooper Fans?

*Unfortunately, Gary's is the only chest hair I'm seeing lately first thing in the morning*

You're cracking me up!! I can definitely relate to that. It's so hard to meet nice guys. I swear all I seem to attract and the weirdos and freaks (which I guess doesn't speak very well for me - ha!). I was talking to Theresa last night about this nasty guy at work (we call him Bird Flu Greg b/c he's constantly coughing and hacking and I swear one day he's gonna lose a lung) and he tried flirting with me a couple weeks ago. He started by telling me I looked real nice today and he liked my blouse. I have not worn that shirt since!! Thankfully he caught the hint that I was not interested and now he's flirting with a new woman and she actually seems to like it - gross!!!!!! But at least he's leaving the rest of us alone now.

On a happier note I had a dream about Clark Gable last night. I've never dreamed about him before and it's probably b/c I'm going to see *Gone With the Wind* at the Paramount this Saturday. It wasn't a romantic dream though, we were just friends but we were sleeping in the same bed together ;). He looked like he did in *It Happened One Night* which I watched again a couple days ago. That's my favorite movie of his and though I've never really been attracted to him he's very adorable and just all around too cute in that one.

I almost don't know how to handle it, I just clicked "reply" ONCE and got here! This has been the worst morning yet for this board, I couldn't even access it for almost an hour. That's how slow my work day is, I feel withdrawl if I can't get here at least once an hour!

I know what you mean Angie about the weirdos, ha! NYC is naturally a breeding ground for them only they look very normal at first. One has to be very, very careful. And if word gets out I like old movies, that only seems to attract them more. Fortunately, my office has pretty normal blokes, but none that interest me, alas.

I'm so excited for you to see GWTW in a theater! It's the way it has to be experienced. Is Theresa going, too? I liked your dream about Clark. I had one of him for the first time fairly recently, but it was kind of like yours in that he was off marrying someone else. I hate those!

Here's hoping I can post again successfully before the day is out. :(

This site is driving me to drink. If only there was something to drink! I may have dye my hair tonight because it's giving my first grays.

Anyway, I'm very excited for you to see GWTW on the big screen, Angie, and I hope Theresa gets to join you. I liked your dream about Clark---I had one too about him for the first time recently. It was similar to yours about Gary in that he went off and married someone else. I hate when that happens!

I know what you mean about the weirdos---NYC is a breeding ground for them. Only they look normal. And if I talk about my fondness for old movies that only seems to attract them more.

Here's hoping I can successfully post this and future replies today. What a mess this board it today!

I finally got back in!! This site is driving me nuts too. Thankfully I just re-dyed my hair a couple days ago so no grays are showing ;) I actually went to a slightly different shade of red called Canyon Copper, but of course when I first read it I thought it said Canyon Cooper so now that's what I call it - ha!

All I found in London were weirdos too. I mean come on it's a huge city and the only 'normal guy' I found that I liked was a very nice guy from Italy who was also a student but he just liked me as a friend. Of course being from Italy every time I saw him I did gets kisses on my cheeks so at least that's something :x. Several times I had people cuss at me or say very rude things as I was just walking down the street minding my own business, and once in a pub a guy slapped my behind as he passed by me. Strange people!!!

That stinks about your Clark dream. I was so upset during my Gary dream where he's was marrying my friend that I felt worn out when I woke up.

While I was waiting to get back in I was looking at the schedule for the next couple months and making a list of the movies I want to record and I saw they are showing *Red Dust* with Clark and Jean Harlow in November and I'm excited to see that one. Most of November looks pretty slim but the rest of this month and especially October (I love old horror movies!) has lots of great stuff!!

Forget those NYC guys. Take my advice and go to Scotland!!! The best men in the world are in Scotland. I used to meet so many totally self-centered players when I lived in DC. Leave those selfish city-boy losers behind and get on a flight to the UK! I went on a business trip to Glasgow that changed my life. I ended up meeting the man of my dreams there, moved there, and now we've been happily married for four years. I can tell you that most of the other men that I met when I lived there all seem to be wonderful to their wives and girlfriends and mothers, I didn't meet any "player" types.

In fact, my new fixation on Gary all started when I saw Mr. Deeds Goes to Town again a few weeks ago. I hadn't seen it since I was in high school, and I was so amused because Gary reminded me so much of my husband (not only his looks but also his sweet personality) that I wanted to see more and more of his films because it's like watching Andrew onscreen. I feel lucky every single day! :)

That's so great that you're happily married!! Especially if it's to a man who is anything like Gary and looks kinda like him too ;) I went to Edinburgh one weekend when I was in England and I loved it. The people were very nice and it's a great city.

I was bored the other day and was looking up stats on Montana (I know, I'm weird) and the average age there is 36 (only 6 years older than me so definitely in my age range) and I wonder if there are any more up there like him?

*Mr. Deeds* is in my top five of his movies and also one of my fave Frank Capra films. Who wouldn't want a man like that!!

Canyon CoopsGirl: Your stories of London sound familiar. I was wildly disappointed in Englishmen when I lived there. I even prefer New Yorkers to them, I'm afraid. However, I like to believe that it's just London, not the rest of the country. Big City-itis. Most major metropolitan cities, and I travel to a lot of them, seem to becoming all alike in terms of their social life and how men and women behave toward eachother. Which is to say it's terribly sad.

MacLamarr: You hit on my Celtic button with your post. I am planning a trip to Ireland this fall, God willing, with a couple of girlfriends and we are really excited about it. I met many Scots when I was in London and they were so friendly. I love Celts, really, all of them: Scots, Welsh and Irish. Marvelously warm. However, I have been leary of Scots because of one reason, and maybe you can give me your own opinion (and ask Andrew, too) if you think they are *stingy* . Scots are stereotyped for it and I have to say stinginess is an almost unforgivable sin in a man to this little chippie. Would you say they are generous? I'd love to know what you think about that and what your hubbie says too. I think it's dreamy how you met and found your happiness. :)

Grrrr, If I could only get this reply button to work without hitting it ten times to get it to work....

Coops and Goddess - I completely agree with you on the London guy thing. A bit too proud of themselves to be worth wasting time on, and of course they are SO much more intelligent than everyone else on the planet! It's absolutely a city thing in most cases, although my husband is from Edinburgh - his mom did a good job, I guess! Your trip to Ireland sounds fantastic - I hope you go and that you have a great time!!! May you meet a charming Irish Gary clone on Milleneum Bridge!

I would say that while many Scots are careful with their money, many also like to have a good time and travel, they love rich food, expensive whisky and the women are VERY much into great clothes. Even our housekeeper in Scotland wore designer clothes and went on holiday to Spain often. Maybe I'm the perfect wife for a Scot because I like to save. But Andrew doesn't monitor my spending and seems glad when I splurge. I don't think Scots are "mean" (stingy) as they say, and Andrew would agree. He is constantly amused by the stereotypes people have of Scots in general. I think part of it is that the UK is an expensive place to live.

I'm trading my ticket to Dublin for one to Edinburgh....hee! Just kidding, but I will have to make a trip there one day soon. I love Sean Connery and any land capable of producing him as well as men who resemble Gary Cooper wins my vote. ;)

I actually met a nice guy on holiday in Monte Carlo last summer, he has an apartment there so that definitely showed the Scots like to live well.

I post in another classic movies forum and one of the dearest people there is a Scot named Stuart. Good people, you chose well! :)

Once you get outside of London, you meet a lot of nice English people. I did about a 6 mile hike one day that's part of the pilgrim's walk from Winchester Cathedral to Canterbury Cathedral when I was on a study abroad trip in England (we were staying in Canterbury). We started at a little village called Wie and went to another little village called Rye. We met a lot of nice people as we walked by their farms and they were all just so charming and sweet. I did meet some nice English people in London but they were mostly women and my professors.

I definitely echo your sentiments about Sean Connery, April. When we were in Edinburgh we did one of those bus tours where you can just hop on and off and we drove by an art college and when the tour guide said he had done some nude modelling there before hitting it big as an actor you should have seen how excited we all got!! *Marnie* is my fave movie of his by the way.

Angie,

I might be a better painter today if I had been around to attend those art classes in Edinburgh. ;)

Marnie is my favorite Connery movie, too, and it's because of Sean that it's my second favorite Hitchcock flick.

I look forward to the day I can take a leisurely tour of the British Isles...seeing London and its environs is not the same as seeing *England* .

Guess what? I was perusing the website of The Film Forum (a theater downtown which hosts classic movie retrospectives) and I noticed that they will be showing a Gene Tierney movie I've never seen called *Rings On Her Fingers* . I was excited by that. I kept on browsing and saw some other titles that looked interesting, including one that vaguely rang a bell which soon turned into a six-alarmer: *CITY STREETS* !!!!! You should have seen me smile. Imagine, this hard to find Coop flick popping up and I might have missed it if I didn't double check! It's playing next Tuesday evening along with two other features (one is a documentary on the director, Rouben Mamoulian, who is the subject of this retrospective). I hope nothing prevents me from going---I'm so excited!

City Streets, as you all know, is the only crime meller Gary ever appeared in and it should be so cool to see him in the milieu. Sylvia Sidney, always a first rate actress, is his leading lady. Here is a link in case anyone else might be in town to catch it:

OH MY GOSH!!!! I'm so moving to New York city (well maybe not, but dang it that's almost enough to make me want to!). You've gotta go see that one, I LOVE *City Streets*. It's very cleverly filmed in that something like 6 people are murdered by the mob but you never see them get killed directly which makes for some interesting cinematography. Also the sets and clothes are beautiful and Gary and Sylvia both give great performances. Clara Bow was originally slated to play Sylvia's role but then her trial happened that drug her name through the mud and laid out a lot of stories about her and Gary's intimate relations and she had a nervous breakdown and never showed up for filming so Sylvia got the part. I love the beginning of that one too when the first time we see Gary it's just the back of his white cowboy hat filling the entire screen and then he turns around with a big smile on that beautiful face :x. He filmed this one at night and *Fighting Caravans* during the day and although he was worn to a frazzle it doesn't show in his performance.

I can't wait, this will be only the second Coop feature I will have seen on the big screen. I hope my prayers will be answered and *Morocco, Saratoga Trunk, Man of the West, The Hanging Tree* or *For Whom The Bell Tolls* will show up eventually. Of course, I will post here all my drooling reviews!

Coopsgirl, I know who Brad Ausmus is and I can relate to not being able to talk in these circumstances. I'm actually worse because I'll never have the guts to approach a player or musician for an autograph. Do you remember who was the rabid lady who jumped on him after throwing the first pitch? Every time I see him that story comes to mind. He was either shocked or embarrassed and a bit scared after that.

It's sad the last killer B will retire soon. Our teams play next and I'm hoping he doesn't do damage along with the huskey(that's what I like to call Berkman because of his eyes). I haven't seen Wiggy in a long time and I'm surprised he's with the Stro's. Well, enjoy the games!

By the way, did Ausmus remember you from the previous encounters?
