Any Gary Cooper Fans?

Being a Mets fan I figured you would know who Ausmus is ;). No, he sees so many fans every year I'm sure he didn't remember me. I do send him a birthday card every year though (to his fan mail address, I'm not a crazy stalker I swear!) which may seem strange but several other die hard Ausmus fans do the same thing and if Gary was alive I'd send him one every year too! It cracks me up that you call Berkman 'Huskey' b/c of his eyes and not his weight - ha! Actually he's in good shape but he just still has that cute, kinda chubby face. I've been watching Biggio play since his rookie year when I was 11 and it will not be the same without him :(. The Astros/Mets series starts tomorrow and I never like playing in Shea Stadium b/c we don't seem to do very well there. We just took a beating last night too from the Brewers losing 14-2. It has not been a pretty season and I hope next year will be better. So far I haven't been real impressed with Wiggy, he's pretty average.

Frank: It was Diane Sawyer who confessed a few years ago that she has a major crush on my Sugarbritches (you only need to look at him and you'll know why I call him that!) and that when she was throwing out the first pitch to him she wanted to jump up on him but she didn't actually do it. I have gotten to love up on him a few times when I've got my pic taken with him and he's in great shape let me tell you :x He's also one of the most fan friendly players and always takes time to sign autographs and chat with the fans. I remember watching games when I was a kid and women like Morgana would run out onto the field and kiss the players. If I thought I could get away with it that might not be such a bad idea ;)

Here's a pic of me and Brad from '06. In every pic of me and him I'm either smiling so big that my eyes are nearly closed or I have kind of a spacey, doofy look (like in '06) b/c my legs are about to buckle underneath me. As much as he effects me, it's a good thing I was never actually around Gary or serious injury may occur when I pass out and hit the ground - ha!

Finally! I have been able to post in every other thread but this one all morning. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Angie, that's such a cute picture with your "Sugarbritches"...I trust it's in full view in your office and/or home.

My plan to see *City Streets* on Tuesday nights was in some jeapardy because I am supposed to go out that night, but I begged and pleaded to change the date so now I can go out with the only real man in Manhattan. ;)

I have that pic of me with Ausmus sitting on top of my monitor and pics of me with several other players as well as pics of Gary in my cube (one from Real Glory, FWTBT, Sgt. York, and High Noon). I gotta tell ya, it's hard to get any actual work done ;)

*so now I can go out with the only real man in Manhattan.*

That's right!! I'm so glad you're gonna get to see *City Streets*.

Goodness! That is too cute for words! If I do say so myself, Gary has one fine looking little harem here; if he could come back he would. ;)

I want to find a picture I can do that with, too---do Angie and Kim have any they've done of themselves with Gary? It's so cool.

Theresa I'm glad you didn't hit your head on the floor with those Melody Jones pictures. lol Coopsgirl, thanks for sharing your picture with Ausmus. I see you really enjoyed yourself. I had forgotten it was Diane Sawyer who was nuts about him but didn't she make him blush after a hug? Frank I don't have an obsession for catchers. I just admire their toughness getting banged up all the time behind the plate and playing through injuries. My catcher gets fired up quickly and he isn't afraid of speaking his mind. He just loves the game, I couldn't ask for more. I'll admit to liking Jason Kendall and my Dukey's smile but what counts is what they do on the field. I've always been fascinated with catching equipment so on the softball team I got to wear it a few times to warm up the pitchers despite being an outfielder. Between that and soccer, my knees are suffering now. lol

Going back to Berkman, I noticed how his light eyes look like they have black eyeliner resembling those of a huskey. I'm am sort of crazy when naming players. Jim Thome was the "Jolly Green Giant" and Xavier Nady "The Guy Without An Appendix". I'll stop here before anyone asks if I had my head checked. haha

Great pics of Coop by the way!

Brad's Squishy Girl -- Let's see, you are pretty, friendly, funny, love baseball, and love MST3K. You should have no problem with guys. Talking ball alone would attract some guys to you. And, no, I'm not talking weirdos.

Brad Ausmus is highly respected in baseball. Very smart guy. He could end up being a manager down the road, so you could be stalking him for many more years to come. Don't worry, your kind of stalking is enjoyable.

ButterscotchGreer -- all of my other girlfriends i grew up with have had their first kiss, and i think i am the only one of them who hasnt been kissed.

Some guy is going to be awfully lucky.

Maybe this is just the overprotective guy in me raising his concern, but are you girls really okay with posting your pictures on the board? I just don't want either one of you (or anyone else) being harmed.

My Favorite Lo Duca Fan -- Frank I don't have an obsession for catchers.

I just thought it was funny that you and Grungy's (Coop's Girl) favorite players are catchers.

Are you sure you haven't caught a few games? You'd never see me using crazy names for others on this board, Girl with a Beautiful Name. Oh, never mind.

Miss G(ary) -- Happy hunting in Ireland. You better pack a stick. By the way, is femme fatale going Irish with you? That could get interesting.

Hey, where is Dan? I need some hardcore Cooper talk. I wanted to jump in on the *High Noon* discussion (Grace Kelly) but this thread kept moving on me. Newcomer Lamarr was (and continues to) making excellent points. I was definitely impressed.

Ahh, it was so nice to see such wonderful compliments this morning, thank you Frank! There was a guy who worked in my building and he loved the Astros and Gary and we'd talk about them a lot but he's around 25 years older than me and married (dang it!). He just retired too last week and I'll miss our little chats. Ausmus is definitely one of the smartest people in baseball (and not just b/c of that Dartmouth degree ;) ) and everyone pretty much expects him to be a manager eventually. I would love it if he would manage the Astros someday. He has the perfect temperment and knowledge to do it.

Don't worry, we never get tired of picking on Grace Kelly in *High Noon*, or at least I never do - ha! I mean, I like the woman as a person but not as an actress. I know I'm just spoiled to how great Gary was and how expressive his face could be, but man, she is so blank in that movie. Kim and I were talking about it again the other night. I mean, for goodness sakes, she was sleeping with the man and still looked at him like he was just a lump of clay!!!!!!!!

Coop's Girl -- You are very welcome. You look good in brick red.

This Grace Kelly fan says, "owee." I can take the pain, though. FYI, I would have dumped icy Grace for Katy Jurado in *High Noon* and Ava Gardner in *Mogambo*. Grace in *To Catch a Thief* is a completely different story.

I have *To Catch a Thief* but haven't watched it yet. I'm saving a bunch of movies until baseball season is (mercifully) over and then I'll have something new to watch every day. I know Grace won an Oscar for *The Country Girl* and I haven't seen that one so I can't comment on it but I've never really liked her in anything. I like her as a person just not as an actress.

As far as *High Noon* goes, I prefer the story as it is, that Gary stays with his wife. I just wish it had been a more experienced actress who would have added a little more depth to the role. Being that it was a small budget, independent film I guess they had to go with what they could get and I imagine Grace was pretty cheap since it was one of her first movies.

Finally I'm able to post in this thread---all day Friday I tried and it would let me post everywhere but here.

Frank - Thank you for your words of caution about posting personal pictures---I'm afraid you may be right.

I agree with Angie about the *High Noon* story working out perfectly, but that Grace's limited performance left something to be desired. However, I can't remember where or who said it but I once read that someone thought Grace's inexperience and subsequent "woodenness" was actually perfect for her character. I believe it was someone connected with the film itself. Perhaps it was only gallantry on their part, who knows? I can't believe that a deeper performance by a more experienced actress might have hurt the characterization.

It's funny but over time the reviews and reaction to High Noon still seem to be somewhat split; most think it a great western, some the best western ever made and then many seem to go the other way and say it's third rate. However, the one thing everyone seems to agree on is the merit of Gary's performance (excepting those who carp on his age or appearance).

In one respect, I feel compelled based on experience and observation of life and men that Grace's characterization was perfection: Older men generally do favor young, pretty, and *vacant* wives. lol!

Too funny!! The boards do seem to be working a little better today. I think we can all agree though that Grace's somewhat bland performance in *High Noon* certainly does no detriment to the film, especially since she is not the main focus. She actually does better in her end scenes where she shoots one of the bad guys and she has a little more emotion showing through her face and body language.

I would guess the main reason people would criticize the film is the lack of action like a typical western may have. It's definitely more a moral and sociological drama. Many people have pointed out before that the same story would fit many settings and in this case the filmmakers chose to use the western genre. I certainly don't see how anyone could ever criticize Gary's performance which is probably why few have. It's one of the best performances ever captured on film. I mean who else could convey so much with so little dialogue. Just with his expressions and body language you feel like you're in his shoes walking down the lonely streets waiting for what may be certain death.

This is a little off topic but I'm posting it anyway ;). Saturday evening my mom and I went to see *Gone With the Wind* at the Paramount theater in Austin. I've talked about it before but for anyone who doesn't know, it's the oldest theater in Austin and was built in 1915. It was used for vaudeville acts and as a movie theater. It was fully restored in the 70s and is absolutely gorgeous. Today they host local and national theater troops and during the summer they show old movies and *GWTW* is the finale every year to their classic summer film series. Theresa and I have been to a bunch of movies this summer and *GWTW* had the biggest audience so far. As soon as the beautiful red curtain parted and the movie began everyone cheered. It was the first time I had seen it on the big screen and it just took my breath away. It's definitely a film that has to be seen on the big silver screen to be fully appreciated.

I can't remember the guy's name but there is a man who has a massive collection of movie memorabilia who lives in Hawaii and he flew in especially for this screening and brought some of the original costumes with him. They were displayed upstairs and it was so cool to get to see the actual clothes the actors wore. My mom always carries around her little digital camera and she got some great pics of them.

In order they are Vivien Leigh's 'shanty town dress', which was originally purchased for $20 by the collector and is now valued at $250,000. Next is Vivien's purple bodice she wears over a good portion of the film when the yankee army is preparing to invade Atlanta and when Melanie (Olivia DeHaviland) has her baby. This is the first of 12 that were made. Each one was distressed a little more and more to look worn out over the course of the scenes where she wears it. Next is Leslie Howard's (Ashley Wilkes) tunic that Melanie made him. Then one of Clark Gable's suits. He's wearing this one in the scene where Scarlett tells him she doesn't want anymore children and he says a locked door won't keep him out and he kicks open her bedroom door and storms out. The last one is a tunic from a soldier (not a main character) and you can also see Vivien's purple bodice again. I was just amazed at what great condition these pieces are still in and also how tiny Vivien Leigh was. It may not come out in the pics but seeing her costumes in person they are teeny-tiny.
