ken123
I think that there is a proverb that goes something like this - Be careful what you wish for, you may get it. Miss Goddess - Thank You - Marjorie's picture gave me a feeling, but it wasn't a naughty one, it was VERY PAINFUL however. coopsgirl
Oh man those are some gorgeous pics!! I've never seen the one in the middle - yay a new Gary pic!! I love the look on his face in the bottom one from *Friendly Persuasion*, it's so serious but in a good way, if that makes sense. We're definite basket cases. I don't know Kim, I love purses (I gotta a ton of them) so maybe I'll be a purse case - ha!

FrankGrimes
Coop's Girl -- Maybe this weekend I'll get around to watching Top Secret again. It has been so long since I've seen it that I don't remember anything about that one. I'm sure I'll enjoy it though now having seen Cloak and Dagger. I love spoof movies. I have all the old Police Squad episodes on DVD (there were only 8 which was such a shame) and it doesn't matter how many times I watch 'em, they crack me up every time. I got my dad's weird sense of humor I guess. I bet your not surprised either that my fave part of the first Naked Gun movie is the baseball game at the end. Especially when 'Enrico Pallazzo' is frisking the catcher. OOOH how I'd love to be an umpire - ha! If you're in the mood for a decent laugh, I think Top Secret! will do the trick for you, especially if you keep Cloak and Dagger in mind. Ohhh, that sweater. I also have Police Squad and all three of the Naked Gun films on DVD. I like the first two but the third is pretty weak. I let my grandma borrow my Naked Gun DVD last year and she ended up loving the film. I was very pleasantly surprised by that. She now says nothing beats that film for laughs. Ahh, it warms my heart. It's actually been a little tough for my grandma this year because my grandpa died in late-March. They were married over 60 years and she was a housewife. She leaned on him heavily. I'm trying my best to help keep her happy. (By the way, Miss G, that's the same grandma of mine who says Clint Walker can, "put his boots under her bed anytime." FYI, the first DVD I bought her was Gone with the Wind, her favorite film. ) What if you were alive in the 40s and the government asked you to help them save Gary Cooper? Are you game? I'm sure you'd still be hesitant, but could you be talked into it? I'm definitely game and I would not hesitate!! I thought so. I wonder if Gary would like "the blouse"? Theresa loves his eyes, April is hypnotized by his hands and I go weak at the sight of chest hair. We're sure a crazy bunch . I can't say that I have noticed his chest hair, CG, but I have picked up on his eyes and hands. I've only seen seven of Coop's films thus far, but I can already tell he's a terrific actor. Any actor who can connect with an audience via their eyes, facial expressions, and body language is a gifted one. Miss G is very much correct about his hands. It's something I've really picked up on in the last two films of his that I watched, Man of the West and Cloak and Dagger. He really knows how to "touch a woman." I can easily see why the "crazy bunch" is so taken by him. I loved when Coop just put his hands on Gina's hips in Cloak and Dagger. It's why I posted that screen cap. A very smooth move by Coop. I also love Gina's reaction to his "move." There is one scene in Peter Ibbetson (I don't want to give too much away since Frank hasn't seen that one yet) but Mary and Peter are in her room and they're laying on the floor and their hands are next to each other and then they hold hands. Wow!! His hand looks absolutely huge in that scene and her's is to tiny. I just love it Thanks for not dishing too much dirt on Peter Ibbetson. I will be getting the box set and its the film I want to see the most in the set, although Madeleine Carroll is a calling, too. Mrs. Cooper -- That's exactly why I'm taking my sweet old time about it, Mr. Apple-A-Day-Keeps-Peter-Lorre-Away. I bruise easily...and I just have to make sure I have my armor on tight so I'll be protected. They may be kind and gentle to begin with, but once they find out yer' against 'em...well, let's just say: Karloff's ice box wouldn't be the best place to spend Holloween. Noir enthusiasts can be a little rough sometimes. You see, I'm used to seeing my favorite films get raked over the coals, so I usually don't take things too personally. I'm used to reading quotes like, "I didn't add that Psycho is my least favorite Hitchcock film" or "Frenzy is just tasteless to me." Now pardon me why I go have a good cry with Butterscotch. I hope she doesn't mind me using her skirt as a big hanky. Brilliant pics, by the way. I like those "action" photos. ButterscotchGreer frankie, and didnt i warn you that i cant stay away from you, you rascal! heehee! My heart just went "pitter patter." Miss G(utter) -- They are exciting to me! And I can't print here all the reasons why!!!! Inner Pandora has left her box. Ladies, we are basket cases, it's official. No comment, Eve. Sleepless night? Good Morning! coopsgirl
I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa. Mine passed away three years ago and it's been real hard on my grandma too. They were married a little over 50 years. Sometimes Gary reminds me of my Papaw a little. They were both tall and thin and had a similar drawl in the way they talked, epspecially in some of Gary's later movies. My step-grandma (stepdad's mom) also loves Clint Walker. If you did notice Gary's chest hair, I might start to worry about you - ha! Seriously though, the first thing I noticed about him was how great an actor he was when I saw *Pride of the Yankees* a couple years ago. I mean, I got so sucked into that movie that I don't think I moved the whole time it was on (except to reach for a kleenex). For some reason though it was another year before I saw anymore of his movies when he was star of the month last December. When he first came on the screen in *Meet John Doe* I was blown away by how gorgeous he was and kinda mumbled to myself 'why didn't I see it in *Pride of the Yankees*?'. I think it's b/c he was just so great as Lou Gehrig that even now when I watch it I don't really see Gary playing Lou, I just see Lou. I think you'll really enjoy all the films in the box set you're getting. It's a good mix of genres ranging from adventure to romance to comedy. It's also a pretty broad range of characters for Gary so you get to see him as a struggling young artist (Design for Living), a tough but compassionate soldier (Beau Geste and Bengal Lancer), a sensitive, romantic man (Peter Ibbetson), and a lonely freedom fighter (General Died at Dawn). My faves are *Peter Ibbetson* and *General Died at Dawn*. GDD is a strange film in that it's got some plot holes that really bug me but it's strangely hypnotic and just fun to watch. It was a also a big hit when it came out and I read comments about it somewhere (probably IMDB.com) where someone said it may not be the best movie ever made but it's certainly one of the most entertaining. *I loved when Coop just put his hands on Gina's hips in Cloak and Dagger. A very smooth move by Coop. I also love Gina's reaction to his "move."* If that man put his hands on my hips he better be ready to catch me b/c I would lose consciousness and I'm not even joking. I know how I get around my Sugarbritches, I practically forget how to speak and I get a serious case of the jelly legs. I can only imagine how much worse it would be around Gary so kudos to all the actresses who were able to keep it together while doing a scene with him (especially if it involved any actual physical contact - ha!). Love those screencaps you posted too, very nice!
MissGoddess
I'm sorry about your Grandfather, too, Scott---but how nice that your Grandmother has such a good grandson. And my, what excellent taste in actors and movies she has! I hope you listen to her. She obviously understands great filmmaking. And, oh, umm, yes, Gary does use his hands very expressively as an actor....but who cares about THAT. Miss Guttersnipe P.S. That bottom screen-cap gave me a giggle. Unless something happened between it and the screen-cap above it, that's got to be the first and only recorded instance of a man looking that happy after a night spent sleeping in a chair...alone. At least it makes me want to watch C&D again this weekend.
MissGoddess
Wow, Angie, you had a Grandfather who reminded you of Gary Cooper. How nice! But how nice that you all still have grandparents at all---I lost all of mine when I was still a kid. My Mother's father was the one I wanted most to know and he died about 15 years ago. He was said to have been a really fine artist (experts saw his work and even said so) so I guess my creativity comes from him via my Mom, who once studied Opera. I envy people who know alot about their family history---that's why being close to the grandparents is important---they can tell you so many interesting things that otherwise might be lost. coopsgirl
My best friend Lisa lost all her grandparents when she was a kid too. She's kinda adopted my grandma as her own. My dad's mom died when I was 2 so I don't remember her but last Christmas he gave me a beautiful pic of her from the 40s when she was in her teens. She left me her wedding ring too and it's absolutely gorgeous. My grandpa bought it for her when he was in Portugal with the Navy. It's white gold with two circles of diamonds around a bigger diamond in the middle. It's really fancy so I don't wear it much, I really should though. coopsgirl
Speaking of interesting stories from your grandparents here's one that stands out the most for me that my grandma told me. During WWII she was between the ages of 8 and 12 and both her older brothers had gone to war and her mom had already been widowed twice. One of her sisters was old enough that she was already married leaving her and her mom and her two other older sisters at home. Well my grandma wanted a christmas tree real bad but they couldn't afford one. They had some little pine trees in the backyard and she begged her older sisters to help her cut one down but they weren't interested so she did it herself and drug it inside and set it up. They couldn't afford to buy ornaments but another woman told her that if she mixed up Ivory soap flakes with water and made a paste she could put it on the tree and it would look like snow so that's what she did in place of conventional decorations. After she got married in the 50s she has put up a beautiful tree every year with real ornaments and she just loves it. It really makes you thankful for all we have today when you hear stories about someone wanting something as simple as a christmas tree.
MissGoddess
Thank you for sharing those stories---people really appreciated what little they had back then, that's for sure. It's so easy to take the many comforts and material things we have for granted----but I think they had a lot more of what's really important---eachother. That ring sounds gorgeous!
coopsgirl
It is a beautiful ring. My mom kept if for me when I was a kid and every now and then I'd ask her to get it out and I would just look at it. My grandma only had sons so she was gonna give it to my mom when she died but then she got cancer when I was a baby (I was her first grandchild and the only one she knew) and she asked my mom if she would mind if she left it to me instead so that's how I got it. She died when she was only 47. I wish they had had better treatments back then and she might still be alive today. I bet Gary could have lived longer too with more advanced treatments. I just think it's so sad that he died before Maria got married.
