movieman1957
Dan and Miss G: Another pretty good Colbert comedy is "The Gilded Lily" with Fred MacMurray. For a drama "Three Came Home." (Much more we'll have to dig up an old Colbert thread.)
MissGoddess
Hi Chris! I think *The Gilded Lily* may be one I've missed. I wish TCM would air *No Time for Love* again, I really enjoyed that one and though I'm not a huge Fred MacMurray fan, I thought he looked pretty attractive as the surly "sand hog" that catches Claudette's eye. I love Claudette's pre-codes, like Torch Singer---that one was great, I have it recorded from TCM. She did another with Gary that I have not seen. butterscotchgreer
*Cody claimed that Cooper and Sarita Monteil had a fling, which goes against some of the* *comments from GC biographers, who wrote that he was turned off by Monteil's bathing habits.* *But I'd believe Cody first, since so many comments attributed to Cooper by biolgraphers don't* *jibe at all with the man that I though I uncovered.* i believe cody too apparently, b/c i have read many of gary's bios and i did read one where the author talked heavily about them having a relationship and even thought other biographers say against this or dont even mention this, it is pretty hard not to believe considering..... CoopfanDan
I do remember that commercial and it is one of the most remembered commercials of my very young youth. I had no idea on the tie in with Gary Cooper though.
CoopfanDan
Thanks Miss G., Movieman and John for the the claudette Colbert recommendations. I have been looking into skewball comedies as of late. There are quite a few that I have never seen by many actors and actresses. I've been checking into buying one with Carole lumbard and William Powell titled My Man Godfrey as I guess it is suppose to be Lumbard's best movie. I was never overly impressed with her in the movies I have seen but haven't seen that many of hers. On dvdbeaver There is a great comparison between the Super expensive Criterion version, new Fox version with both color and black and white for only 10 dollars and the public domain. I can't tell the difference in the black and white comparasions so I won't be choosing the Criterion version over the Fox one. Also the colorized version that also has the Black and white is extremely impressive. Even the guy that runs the site who is very much against colorization recommends this one over the 40 dollar Criterion version. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare10/mymangodfrey.htm Also, Miss G. you will be happy to know that I have the following movies with two of your favorite stars in them in my queue at the top of the list: Thin Man After the Thin Man Another Thin Man Shadow of the Thin Man The Thin Man Goes Home Song of the Thin Man Evelyn Prentice Double Wedding I Love you again Love Crazy Libeled Lady I already have the Mahatten Melodrama and any other movies that Myna Loy was in with Clark Gable, Cary Grant ect. I think Mahatten Melodrama is the only movie I have ever seen that had William powell in it.
coopsgirl
William Powell was the bad guy in *Nevada* with Gary so you've probably seen him in that. That was the first movie I saw with him and he made a good bad guy. Then I saw him in *The Thin Man* and couldn't imagine how he ever got cast as a villian. He was perfect in the Thin Man films and other screwball and light comedies. I've also seen *Double Wedding* and *Love Crazy* and they're both great. I have most of the other movies you listed recorded and are going to watch them along with a bunch of others in the near future now that the baseball season is over. Thanks for the info on *My Man Godfrey*, I want to get that one too.
MissGoddess
Hi Dan! That's great that you are going to see all those Powell/Loy movies---The Thin Man movies are the best of the bunch, along with Libeled Lady. I think I envy people a little bit who are getting to see these for the first time. *My Man Godfrey* is one I've gushed about, ad nauseum, all over the place as my favorite comedy and in my opinion, the funniest movie ever made. I have the Criterion version but that's because I am such a die-hard fan of the movie, and of Carole. In your case, I say go with the less expensive version, too, especially if the b&w print was struck from the same source. Until Criterion did their release, all that were ever shown or sold on vhs & dvd were dreadful public domain prints which made movie all but unwatchable. Imagine, one of the best movies ever made, falling into almost total decay!
MissGoddess
That top photo is very interesting, Kim---where Gary looks like he's getting a massage. He really looks beat, I wonder what western that's from?
jemnyc
Miss G: That top photo is very interesting, Kim---where Gary looks like he's getting a massage. He really looks beat, I wonder what western that's from? I think it's from Man/West, as if the director (Mann? Or the assistant director) is demonstrating how he wants the knife to be used against GC's throat as Billie is forced to strip. As usual, pix are spot-on! MissGoddess
OH! I just clicked on the picture to blow it up and I didn't see the knife before! Yikes. Thanks, John, no wonder he looked "beat", ha! I watched the documentary about William Wyler that is included on the dvd of The Love Trap, and it really didn't say much about Gary, though it showed a brief clip from Friendly Persuasion. However, I really recommend it to all of you because it includes so many interviews of start that are dead now (Audrey, Greg Peck, Chuck Heston--well he's still here, barely--John Huston, Greer Garson, Lillian Helman and Billy Wilder). Wyler's (2nd) wife was a real beauty and they seem to have had a wonderful marriage. Wyler, Billy Wilder and George Stevens were the three directors I first started to discover in depth (reading everything I could get my hands on) when I first got into classic movies. I can't believe he died just three days after the documentary was finished. He seemed in fairly good health.
coopsgirl
*OH! I just clicked on the picture to blow it up and I didn't see the knife before!* I was wondering why you thought it looked like he was getting a massage - ha!. Great pics Kim! I noticed too in the one from *The Westerner* it has that other girl in it. I've seen at least one other promo pic with her too and I've wondered who she was and why she wasn't in the movie instead of Doris Davenport who I thought was the weakest part of that film. jemnyc
Angie, regarding: Great pics Kim! I noticed too in the one from The Westerner it has that other girl in it. I've seen at least one other promo pic with her too and I've wondered who she was and why she wasn't in the movie instead of Doris Davenport who I thought was the weakest part of that film. Funny you should mention that. Wyler had originally cast a young actress with whom he was involved -- she later became his wife. Goldwyn was annoyed with this and instructed Wyler to instead use a Goldwyn actress, Doris Davenport. Had no choice but to agree. I, too, feel that she's the weakest thing in the film. A few years ago, I spoke with Cathy Wyler about her doc, and asked her if Wyler gave The Westerner short shrift because of Goldwyn having made him use Davenport instead of his gf/wife. She laughed, but wasn't sure, and admitted that might explain why.

coopsgirl
Thanks for the info about the actresses in *The Westerner*. I had thought it was Davenport who got the job b/c of her relationship with someone associated with the studio, I probably just misread that somewhere. The other woman may have been worse for all I know but I like her look better, it just seems like maybe she would have fit the part more so than Doris. Oh well, it's like Grace Kelly in *High Noon*, I don't think either one did a very good job (Grace or Doris) but neither are bad enough to drag down the movies. coopsgirl
This doesn't really have anything do with Gary or old movies, it's just a fun time waster. On another website I like to peruse (agonybooth.com) somebody posted a link to a translation website that completely mangles English. It's fun to type something in in English, then translate to another language and then back to English. You get some crazy stuff back. Here are some that I did and here's the link. http://babelfish.altavista.com/ *My favorite actor is Gary Cooper and Meet John Doe is my favorite movie of his.* Here it is translated from English to Traditional Chinese then back to English. *I like the actor is the Gallie wooden cooper and assembles the movie which Zhang? is his I likes.* I got mad at that one b/c they had the word 'wooden' in there!! Here's the poem from *Mr. Deeds*. I tramped the earth with hopeless beat - Searching in vain for a glimpse of you. Then heaven thrust you at my very feet, A lovely angel - too lovely to woo. My dream has been answered, but my life's just as bleak, I'm handcuffed and speechless in your presence divine. For my heart longs to cry out, if it only would speak, I love you, my angel - be mine, be mine. Here it is from English to Korean and back to English. Me endurance act it steps in battery and - your parting inside having become hazard Hus, it searches. The that time heaven in order me, to woo rightly in the foot will be extensive, the A love which is lovable the be angel - it pushed too much. Hwang phyey grudge, it goes out and it fills the handcuffs, inside shoes your existing with the thing together my, dream answer back, but my life which is legitimate. Hazard it talks my heart longs a l thing which will cry at the outside only and, me it will be extensive my angel it loves - my, thing, it is my, thing be. This one nearly made me bust out laughing!! What the heck is a 'hwang phyey grudge'?

butterscotchgreer
that is exactly what i thought about Davenport, b/c i really didnt like her performance in The Westerner, and just didnt like her at all, and the same thing with grace kelly. i mean she was pretty and all, but she just expression when acting with gary. wasnt she having an affair with him during the filming? at least she could look it..you know, she could smile or something. im not trying to bring her down or anything, it is just in this movie, i never pay any attention to her at all and focus entirely on gary's performance.....and eyes. heehee! i really would have loved to see greer garson as jane mathews in the Westerner. that would have been so awesome! coopsgirl
I found a ton of cool songs from the 20s on Rhapsody yesterday and I'm still working my way through listening to them and they are so cute and jivey!! I just heard one called *Big Boy* from 1923 and it reminded me of somebody but I can't quite put my finger on who it might be (ha!). *Big Boy* There he goes just look at the clothes on big boy, that big boy. There's a man who certainly can make love, all the ladies love him. Six foot tall no wonder they fall for big boy, sweet big boy. He's just the type of gally peck (no idea what that means - ha!), he's the strongest type of the weaker sex. See that strut ain't nothing else but my big boy, sweet big boy. Great big smile would go any mile to see. Let me tell you outside he's so strong and athletic, inside he is so sympathetic and that's why the women all cry for big, big boy! There he goes just look at the clothes on big boy, that big boy. There's a man who certainly can make love, he's a mean sweet daddy. See that chest and look at the rest of big boy, sweet big boy. Big or small they certainly fall for him. They say since he kissed the old widow Johnson, she thinks she's Gloria Swanson! And that's why the women all cry for big, big boy! MissGoddess
Cute lyrics! You should do a video montage to that tune, it sounds like you-know-who was the inspiration for it.
coopsgirl
I was thinking to it would make a good slideshow but it's not the best sound quality and kinda hard to understand the lyrics. I had to keep pausing it and going back to figure out what she was saying in some parts. There are a lot of other really cute ones though so I'll probably pick one and do a 20s themed slideshow of Gary. Here's a good one. *When My Sugar Walks Down the Street* When my sugar walks down the street The little birdies go "Tweet, tweet, tweet" And in the evenin' when the sun go down It's never dark when he's around He's so affectionate I'll say this when he kisses me I sure stay kissed When my sugar walks down the street The little birdies go "Tweet, tweet, tweet"

BANANA OIL!! heehee! i was listening to my frankie sinatra cd and i found another song that reminded me too much of gary, called " youre getting to be a habit with me" heehee! isnt that so true!
