Yeah! Listen to this, I have to share this with peeps who'll appreciate it more than most of my friends: my best friend was at a party last night for the people who live in the Dakota building and Lauren Bacall was there so they started talking and my friend told her about me that I was a HUGE fan and that I had pictures of her all over my house (well, that was stretching things a bit) and Lauren said, laughing, "Oh, how awful!" Ha! But my friend said she was very sweet and flattered and would like to meet me one day! I'm so excited---my friend sees her alot and she would have invited me last night only she didn't find out about it until the last minute. She said Lauren is never snobbish at all and always stops to say hello, but this was the first time she really had a chance to chat with her. It may be that she'll be invited to another party later on in which case my friend will let me know.

If I do get to meet her it will be the first actress I met that I was honestly a big admirer of. I've met a couple of the more modern actresses without it being that big a deal, but Lauren Bacall---not only have her movies given me a great deal of pleasure (and I love her outspokenness), but I think Bogart was one of the finest screen actors of them all.

Wow! That's amazing, April! I'm so happy for you!

When you do get to meet her you absolutely must take some pictures. I bet you were just bursting with excitement!

Hi Kim---"bursting" is the word! If the appropriate opportunity arises, I want a picture with her very much. It would be a treasure. I just hope I can meet her soon.

It's incredible how you keep finding images of Gary never seen before. I like the one from *Man of the West* with Royal Dano, one of my favorite character actors. And that's a great one of him on horseback, that looks to be from The Westerner.

*Peter Ibbetson* - I was so happy to find this one b/c it's hard to find pics from this film.

Here's one for Theresa. I think this might have been the one you were talking about of Gary and Lupe. I'll see if I can find a version without the watermark.

Thank U for your shots of Cooper. Amazing, in almost each picture he had a smoke in his hand. Just curious but was he that much of a smoker or just nervous? Anyone know!

Gary Cooper was one of the least nervous people probably that ever lived. He was a heavy smoker as was just about every single actor or actress from back then. He was not allowed to smoke on the set of Sergeant York as the real Sergeant Alvin York was a deeply religious man who was on the movie set every single day and would not allow Gary to smoke while making the movie. Alvin York believed that smoking was a sin and was heavily offended by it. This was not a health issue back then as people had no idea that smoking was even bad for you. However, I have been in enough churches to know that the deeply spirtual one's all belive even today that smoking is a sin against God and an addiction that should not be continued after becoming a Christian. The real Alvin York did not smoke but used chewing tobacco and was delivered of his addiction when he became a Christian and never drank or chewed again the rest of his life. I think I have read that quiting his chewing tobacco addiction was the hardest thing he ever did as that was one thing that he really enjoyed doing before becoming a Christian. I wholeheartly aggree with him as Chewing tobacco is in fact the greatest and only thing that I personally miss doing since becoming a Christian. You never really lose the craving for it even after decades of being stopped. There is no person in the history that I respect more than the real Sergeant Alvin York. He was the greatest man to ever live and of whom I pattern my own life by. There was NO other actor that could have played him other than Gary Cooper. I would not even watch a movie with anyone else playing his part.

Gary Cooper is my second favorite person after Alvin York. There was no faults with Alivin York. He was tremendously loyal to his wife Gracie and had no faults. All the money he made from the movie was used to make a Bible making factory. To me there was no greater hero or person than Alvin York.

I suppose this is why there will never be a better movie for me than Sergeant York. It was a movie made about the greatest person to ever live and had the greatest actor to ever live playing the part in Gary Cooper. I don't think any movie will ever be topping this movie on my number 1 list.

What you said about the real Alvin York makes me think of Lou Gehrig and why he's one of my fave baseball players. Now obviously what Gehrig did (playing baseball for a living) doesn't compare to what York did in battle, but he was also a wonderful man all the way around. Lou was faithful to his wife, a great teammate, a fantastic player, a good son, had no vices, worked hard every day and was a wonderful role model to kids who (whether we like it or not) look up to athletes. I mean look at the atheletes today who are amongst the most popular: Barry Bonds (cheats on his wife, possible drug user, all around jerk), Manny Ramirez (shows very poor sportsmanship by staring at all his homeruns - this really bothers me bad!! and he also sits out games with very minor injuries and whines about it), Michael Vick (dog fighting as well as numerous other bad habits).

These people are all very talented and good at what they do but if I had kids I would not want them to look up to these people as any sort of role model. Now I'm not saying that unless your squeaky clean you're a bad person, but when there are good guys out there who also are good athletes I would prefer to look up to them. But the good guys who not only play very well but also don't get into trouble don't make the news as often as the other guys. I'm about 99% sure Lou Gehrig would not have been as big a 'star' if he hadn't played for the Yankees. At one point in his career, people in the Yankees organization asked Lou if he could play with a little more flair and just be flashier and he politely refused b/c that just wasn't how he was.

I also feel that no one could have played Gehrig better than Gary, who was not squeaky clean himself, but had many character traits in common with Lou and totally captured his sweet nature.
