MissGoddess
Interesting that in many of their pictures together Coop and Rocky don't touch each other, and if Maria is around she's the one he embraces. Just something I've noticed.
coopsgirl
You're right about that. Now that I think about it the times when Gary and Rocky looked happiest together and are actually touching and both smiling are right after they got married (late '33-early '34) and the last couple years of their marriage. Of course that would also correspond to times when he was faithful to her so that may be the reason right there. Despite Rocky's faith and not wanting to be divorced, I wonder how long their marriage would have lasted without Maria. She really seemed to be the glue that held their family together. I've read things that talked about how bad he felt for Maria when he and Rocky got separated b/c he felt like he had embarassed her and let her down yet he didn't seem to have the same sympathy for Rocky. Now that's not to say he didn't care about Rocky, but that he seemed to have been more upset about leaving Maria than Rocky.
butterscotchgreer
oh my goodness i just noticed that last night when i was going through all my coop pics...again. heehee! that is too funny, i saw in almost all of them that they hardly ever touch, hug, or kiss, or even hold hands very much. i do have a couple where they are holding hands, but even in those their hands arent that interlocked with each other and they look as if they are about to disconnect. metsfan
ScottyWolf, I took a break from the wolf experiments to assist Dr. Dolittle on a voyage in search of the pink sea snail. We did find the elusive sea creature and I must say it had a friendly disposition. The transformation from land to sea has drastically changed it's physiology. Have you undergone any changes while I was away? Please let me know so I can write it down in my notes. MissG, thanks for the kind offer of wolfbane. It will come in handy if I ever come across the unknown wolf that almost ravaged my arm when I hid in the fog to observe it. I'll count on you to supply me with darts because it's necessary to tag this dangerous wolf next time.

FrankGrimes
Hiya, Sweet One -- FRANKIE! i know you were kidding about the happy ending of Out of the Past, i decided to play along. heehee! You got me on that one. I thought you were being serious. Hey, I like this being had feeling. my grandmama doesnt mind watching it actually, i am like her in many ways, we both like the same things and all of those things vary with differences. Why you are far more interesting than I ever imagined, Sweet Tea. This grandmama of yours sounds absolutely wonderful, so keep on following her lead. Of course, I gotta say that your tomboy mom sounds just as wonderful. But it's grandmama that I'd love to hang out with. What about you? I'll pick up some gardenias. no leave that water in your ears....we all love april! Hyper-romanticism, flirtatiousness, impetuosity, vulnerability, impertinence, and many faults. Hmmmm. I suppose that's lovable. Now where have I heard the word "impertinent" before? It freshly echoes in my mind for some reason. I wonder. Hi there, Mighty Blouse -- I liked the Betrayal pic. I'm a fan of Emil Jannings. Who's that wavy-haired fella in the picture? Is that Ben Murphy? What's stewin', Mad Scientist Lady -- ScottyWolf, I took a break from the wolf experiments to assist Dr. Dolittle on a voyage in search of the pink sea snail. I figured you had run off with a doctor. You Mets fans seem to love Doc. Let me guess, you stayed at a Howard Johnson, watched El Sid, and shared Strawberries throughout the Knight, right Darling? Have you undergone any changes while I was away? Please let me know so I can write it down in my notes. Ohhh, none at all. I'm exactly the same as you left me: well-behaved and quite innocent. I'm sure the Coop Girls will vouch for me. There's absolutely no reason to check out the security cameras. None whatsoever. You'll only see me offering a kind woman some cake and a little pot of butter sent by my mother, Little Mets Girl Up to No Good in the 'Hood. MissG, thanks for the kind offer of wolfbane. It will come in handy if I ever come across the unknown wolf that almost ravaged my arm when I hid in the fog to observe it. I'll count on you to supply me with darts because it's necessary to tag this dangerous wolf next time. Ravaged your arm? Well, I was just hugging you, my dear. That's what big arms are for. I must say, I'd much rather be observed and tagged by a dart than what Miss Loved By All is offering: poison and bullets. Ahhhh, such wonderful, tender love. Sigh. Good Day, Miss Goddess -- Which brings me to Mr. Wet Behind the Ears: Apropos. I'm so glad you liked, I mean loved, the Gary and Audrey pictures. Tell me, what is it about them that you love? Just testing out this "genuine compliment". Timber!! Three deciduous trees that are indigenous to the Northwest? Vine Maple, Dry-Slope Hackberry, and Christmas. Okay, okay. I like the Gary and Audrey pictures because they are very relaxing to me. I also like it when girls fool around with guys in a cute way. Ohh, gosh, I'm starting to turn into a hopeless romantic wolf now. You better get those silver-tipped dealies you mentioned ready. I don't think it's possible for me to give you another compliment. Yes, I ate the wolfbane pie you baked already. It was DEviLISH. By the way, I'll have the leg now and the rest later. I may have to watch Peter Ibbetson this weekend just so we ALL can be on track and ALL of us comment on it. I hope ALL of you Coop fans do watch Peter Ibbetson again this weekend. I'LL probably watch Cape Fear or The Wild Bunch or M or some other film loaded with psychos. Please let me know if you like Peter Ibbetson, too. I'm curious to find out if I would like it. Well, I'm off to build me a wagon. So do any of you Coop Girls have any boards I can use? Promise Kept
MissGoddess
Oh Angie THANK YOU for finding a photo related to GARDEN OF EVIL, one of my top five favorite Gary movies. I find his character so enigmatic and the sort of off-beat pairing of him with Susan Hayward works for me even though she looks perplexed around him most of the time. Ha! To me his character is basically like a Giant surrounded by manic Lilliputians. I can't wait for this movie to come to dvd---and here are my most anxious for release (on Region One) titles in order of anxiety: 1. Man of the West 2. Ten North Frederick 3. Saratoga Trunk 4. Garden of Evil 5. The Hanging Tree
MissGoddess
Three deciduous trees that are indigenous to the Northwest? Vine Maple, Dry-Slope Hackberry, and Christmas. Hmmm....I feel tempted to check in Wikipedia about that last tree...but to show I can trust you I won't. Those pictures are really sweet, which tells me you must have let the dvd run through at least once...any preliminary comments, Mr Burns?
coopsgirl
You don't see *Garden of Evil* or *Peter Ibbetson* pics very often and I've found pics from both of those this week. Ebay rules!! John said *Garden of Evil* was supposed to be released on dvd later this year with a 'making of' special as an extra feature. It's not listed in Region 1 format as a pre-order yet on amazon so I'm not sure what the status of it is. I'm so excited to see that one as a real dvd release b/c I assume it would be in widescreen format and not the full screen pan and scan version shown on AMC. Those are all good ones you listed too. I tell you I'm just chomping at the bit to see his three early talkies that we don't have. I want them to be released so bad it's not even funny!!!! MissGoddess
You're so right about the ridiculous Pan-and-scan scam version of GofE shown on TV----given the spectacular locations and beautiful color cinematography, some of the best in any western I've seen, it's such a waste. I hope John's predicition comes true. I am also wildly anxious to see his early talkies, particularly the one with Carole Lombard, I Take This Woman. And I think it was during filming of this movie...that he did.

Is that Ben Murphy?* It's not Ben just Gary, but he's at his Ben Murphy-est!!! I was gonna watch *Naked Edge* later today since Deborah Kerr passed away yesterday, but now you got me wanting to watch *Riding With Death*!! Decisions, decisions. Maybe I could give it the old college try and watch them both . Cute pics from *Peter Ibbetson*, man those kids in the beginning (Dickie Moore and Virginia Weidler) will just break your heart. Since you haven't seen *Sgt. York* yet I'll give you a heads up to look for Dickie Moore as his younger brother George. I couldn't remember the little girls name so I had to look her up and I hadn't even realized it but she played the little girl Tina in *Souls at Sea* who recites the Hiawatha poem. She was also Katherine Hepburn's little sister in *The Philadelphia Story*.

(Okay, pulling my mind up out of the gutter and trying to wipe off the mud I know, I know, I'm a terrible instigator. But I don't even like to imagine what it would have been like to have been a Hollywood starlet in the 1930s...oh, no. I always thought it would have been ideal to have been a teen in the 1920s, in my 20s during the 1930s and in my thirties in the 1940s....the perfect generational situation for romance. coopsgirl
I like your plan, now we just gotta get working on that time machine! We gotta take plenty of money too b/c of that whole depression thing ya know. Somebody said something the other day on tv about how if they had a time machine they'd go back and stop wars and stuff. I was in the kitchen washing dishes mumbling to myself what I would do and my stepdad was in there gathering up the trash and he heard me mumbling and said 'what?' So I said loudly 'if I had a time maching I'd go back and watch Gary's movies in the theaters and buy cute hats!'. He just laughed at me and took out the trash. MissGoddess
Ha haaaa! You and me both. Think of the cute clothes! coopsgirl
I so want to fix my hair in waves like they used to but it looks complicated and I've never been very good at styling hair. We get to dress up where I work for Halloween every year (which is my second fave holiday to Christmas) and this year I'm gonna wear the vintage 30s outfit I got a few weeks ago. It's so cute!! It's a light blue day dress with dark blue stripes and mother of pearl buttons. I also got the cutest blue hat to match it too. I call it my Jean Arthur hat b/c it looks like something she would have worn in the 30s. I also got a cute pair of blue suede t-strap shoes. The only problem is they have 4 inch heels!!!! I can walk in them fine but man they hurt your feet. I've just been sitting around the house wearing them b/c they're so cute. Hey, sometimes fashion is painful!! My shoes kinda look like the first one on the top row.
MissGoddess
Angie that outfit sounds divine! I'm sure you're going to break some hearts swinging around in your T-straps! I used to have the cutest little early 1940s black cocktail dress and I stupidly lost it in one of my gypsy-moves. What I love about those fashions is how they really fit in the waist, which helps you keep your figure trim, believe it or not. Actually, I used to have so many vintage outfits I bought at second-hand shops and now I'm wondering what became of them all.... One way to get nice, tight curls is the old-fashioned way--sleeping in curlers. The best ones are fabric-covered spongie curlers with wires inside so you just roll up and twist them in place. I know Walgreen's here in the northeast sells them for just around $3 so you might find them in your local drug-store. You will be amazed how long lasting the curls are---I sometimes think our great grandmothers were better off without all the fancy hot-rollers we have today. Welcome to Gary Cooper's Beauty Parlour, folks!

FrankGrimes
Actually I went with Doctor X first and I'm now fixing to watch General Died at Dawn. Are you pushing me towards another Coop film? The General Died at Dawn is the next film in the box set I'm gonna watch. I need my Maddy fix. It's been awhile. A few years ago I was Agent Scully from X Files and that was cool, then I was a quack doctor with bloody scrubs, then I was a fairy princess (great excuse to wear a tiara all day!), then I was a baseball player (dressed up in my Astros gear, I even had the high sock look with red stirrups), then I was a vampire with a cool Louise Brooks style black wig. So this year I'll be a dame from the 30s. What a wonderful excuse to wear my little Jean Arthur hat and not get weird looks!! Jean Arthur, Gillian Anderson, and Louise Brooks. All of them are favorites of mine. You could definitely pull off Scully, Canyon Cooper. Love the X-Files. Trust No One.
coopsgirl
I think you'll like *General*, it's strangely hypnotic and just a fun movie. It was a big hit when it came out too. I'm not surprised either, Madeleine's not too bad to look at (ha!) and you get to see Gary with his shirt off twice :x .Seriously though it was quite an anticipated film as it was one of the 30s most celebrated playwright Cliffod Odet's first screenplay. FrankGrimes
Before I share my thoughts on Peter Ibbetson, I'd thought I post the screen captures. I hope this doesn't cause this expansive thread's load time to drag considerably. If it does, I'll remove some. The amount of caps I'm posting is a clear indicator of my feelings about the film. "Look what you've done!" "Look at her face." "I will never play with you again!" "Gogo, look. Ya-ya-ya-ya." So do you think a sentimental fool like me would respond to a girl crying because the boy she cared about was hurting? Uh-huh. That's my zip code. "Gogo, don't cry." "I can't leave Paris. Be-because I can't." "Mimsey, I'll be back." "There never was anybody quite like me." "Hello." One of my favorite lines in the film. "And how long have you been in love with my wife, Mr. Ibbetson?" Funny you should ask. "Meaning?" "I've given nothing else a thought." "A little girl in a little garden." "Crick." "Crack." A phenomenal shot. "I went back to that garden not long ago, and you were still there, in that funny little white dress, and I knew then that I had never loved anyone else and never could." "You forgot our garden." "Yes, that's it. I forgot, didn't I? Do you know how much I forgot?" "Oh yes, I forgot the garden and the little white dress. That's why I kept it, I suppose." "Mimsey, it's you." I love how Mimsey drops the dress (the past) in this shot because the now is so very alive again for her and Gogo. "Very, very pretty." "I'm sure she was worth it, wasn't she, Mr. Towers." "Take my hand. We're going to escape." Perhaps it's because our love is so deep." "Did it come?" "It didn't come." "It's a world. It's our world." "But you needn't be afraid, Peter. The strangest things are true and the truest things are strange." "And I have a gift for you. It's why I brought you here. Would you be good enough to look?" "I built it for you, out of the clouds, the heavens, and the stars. All very simple." "Don't you hear it? It's the thunder of the world." "Live? Live. Yes. For years. For years and years and years." "We can't meet here forever." "Hold my hands, Peter. Tighter. Tighter." This death sequence is one of the greatest that I have ever seen. Push in until you no longer see Mimsey and pull out to reveal she is gone. Excellent. "There's so much to say and so little time to say it in. I'm waiting for you."
