coopsgirl
WOW!! Those screencaps are fantastic!! Looking through them got me all teary eyed and runny nosed. The 'Hello' line where he's looking up into the tree is my favorite part of the whole film. he just does that scene so perfectly and so sweetly. The one where he's standing next to the window and you can see his reflection in the silver platter thing is a neat shot. It's just a wonderfully filmed movie with all kinds of neat shots like that. CoopfanDan
Hi Frank, Unlike nearly everyone else that posts here I do love Ann Harding's performance in this movie. I may not have been as fond of it on the first viewing but after 30 or more viewings (i've lost count) I can no longer see anyone else playing the part. This movie would rank right up there with Sergeant York as my favorite film of Gary Cooper's. This particular film as you know is one of my favorite kind of love stories. I would say that ww1 love story/war movie may be the only kind of picture that I may like better. It is certainly a movie that I consider at the top and one of Gary Cooper's best performances right along side Sergeant York. I do rank both of these much higher than other Gary Cooper fan favorites Meet John Doe, Mr Deeds, High Noon, Man of the West, Garden of Evil and many others. I probably also rank the non-Gary Cooper movie Random Harvest higher than the above mentioned Gary Cooper fan favorites as well. Two other Cooper movies I like better than the fan favorites are Friendly Persuation and The Westerner. The Westerner is a guy buddy picture which is so much better than the other guy buddy picture Souls at Sea in my opinion, but his love interest in The westerner is truely a bad one. That movie has to be viewed as a buddy picture ignoring the love story aspect to be appreciated. I do think that Gary was at the top of his game though in the 30's and am sure you will love all of the movies in the Universial box set that you purchased. My only problem with Beau Geste is a writers problem as I think Gary Cooper's character would have been better if he would have been the one to give a Viking like funeral. I do prefer the Universial Box set as a whole to the WB brothers box set eventhough that one included my favorite movie Sergeant York. Dan
CoopfanDan
Just so you know Frank, I won't be posting very much if any on Gary Cooper here from now on, but I do wish you the best in you exploration of Gary's movies. Pehhaps you can take over here on the male perspective on Gary and his movies with all the ladies that post here.
FrankGrimes
Hi, Coop's Girl -- WOW!! Those screencaps are fantastic!! Looking through them got me all teary eyed and runny nosed. I'm very glad you liked them. The film is emotionally potent. I'm hoping to find some time later today to share my thoughts on the film. The 'Hello' line where he's looking up into the tree is my favorite part of the whole film. he just does that scene so perfectly and so sweetly. I agree. I will talk about Coop's performance in the film and my impression of his acting style overall. It's just a wonderfully filmed movie with all kinds of neat shots like that. More agreement from me. Geez, I gotta lot to say about the film, hence I need to take some time. I'm still drying off from my dip in the Bay. Hey, Dan -- Unlike nearly everyone else that posts here I do love Ann Harding's performance in this movie. I liked her, too. Maybe it's a PA guy thing. Hey, Ann's a Texas girl, so she can't be all bad, can she? Ohhhh, wait. Never mind. Scratch that. This movie would rank right up there with Sergeant York as my favorite film of Gary Cooper's. I may have some surprising news regarding this film with me. The teaser is teasing again. This particular film as you know is one of my favorite kind of love stories. After learning about your own personal situation, I can see why you'd like Peter Ibbetson. It's absolutely you, through and through. I do prefer the Universial Box set as a whole to the WB brothers box set eventhough that one included my favorite movie Sergeant York. I'm thinking that's going to be my own experience. Peter Ibbetson alone is worth the box set for me. Everything else in the set is going to be icing on the cake. Just so you know Frank, I won't be posting very much if any on Gary Cooper here from now on, but I do wish you the best in you exploration of Gary's movies. Pehhaps you can take over here on the male perspective on Gary and his movies with all the ladies that post here. You do what's best for you, Dan. I still contend that you will peek your head in here. I hope that you do, too. And if I'm the male perspective for Coop films, it could get real ugly up in here. You are far more qualified to play that lead role than I. I'm just the guy who picks on Sugarblouses, Sweet Tea, and Flown the Coop. The only person I really don't tease is Miss Goddess. butterscotchgreer
*Hyper-romanticism, flirtatiousness, impetuosity, vulnerability, impertinence, and many faults.* *Hmmmm. I suppose that's lovable. Now where have I heard the word "impertinent" before? It* *freshly echoes in my mind for some reason. I wonder.* you know more words frankie!!! MissGoddess
Those screencaps from P.I. were a nice welcome back on a Monday. I'm glad to see you liked the movie, it's always been a movie that I loved even before I really became aware of Gary Cooper as an actor. Although she's not exactly an exciting actress, Ann Harding is alright for me because she gives the impression of being the kind of woman who would experience something like her character did, for love. I'd adore to see this movie on the big screen, what an experience that might be.
coopsgirl
I've got the screencap where Gary is laying down and Ann is leaning over him on my desktop. The one where he's got a little tear running down his face b/c he thinks the ring didn't come yet is just heartbreaking. When it gets to that part I talk to the tv (which I do quite a lot) and tell him 'it did come, it did come!'. The first time I watched that one I didn't really know what it was about, I was just working my way through the movies on that set b/c I had the day off b/c of the snow (it was my birthday too!). I was hooked from the beginning b/c the kids were so good. It's really a shame this isn't a more well known movie b/c it's practically flawless. I think Ann Harding did a good job of acting so it's not that that bothers me. It's hard to explain but it's just something about her voice that's a little too husky maybe. I think a more feminine, sweet voice would have fit the character better. Of course this does not detract from the movie (like some of his other leading ladies who shall remain nameless - ha!) and is my only complaint. Hey I noticed in the January schedule that they are showing *High Noon*. I'm sure we all have that one but I'm glad they added another one of his films as that one it typically shown a lot on AMC but not TCM. Their Paramount package kicks in in January too but I think it's for the films that Paramount actually owns which would be its silents and post-1949 films. They are gonna air *Wings* sometime in '08 but it's not in the Jan schedule. I wonder if they'll show any of his other silents?

coopsgirl
I was listening to the Icons show from yesterday about spy movies and they were talking about *Saboteur* and John said how much better he thought it would have been if Gary had agreed to do it instead of Robert Cumming who he thought was weak in it and also if Barbara Stanwyck had been in it too. Then Stepen Bogart said he only knew Cummings from his comedy tv show 'Love That Bob' then Meir Ribalow who was their guest said 'I just can't see a tv show called 'Love That Gary'. Then John said 'although a lot of women did' and Meir said 'yeah but not in a comic way' and they got cracked up. I don't know anything about that film but I can imagine if Gary had been in it I'm sure I would love it . They were talking too about *Cloak and Dagger* and how good the scene is where Gary is fighting with one of the bad guys in that little lobby inside the apartment buidling and just how vicious the fight scene is and that Gary's character ends up killing him by breaking his neck and choking him. Then he's so distraught over what he had to do that he's just in a state of shock for quite a while after that and he can't really say or do anything and he just sits there in the car as they're making their get away with blood still on his face. They were talking about how that kind of reaction has been lost in most spy movies from the 60s through today (especially ones where a regular person is caught up in the spy business) up until the character of Jason Bourne in the Bourne spy movies. Then they were talking about how Lang (who directed it) often had moments like that in his films where there was this kind of thoughful moment where characters process what they had done. MissGoddess
I hope one day I can make the time to sit and listen to all those Icons shows I've been missing. That is a very significant observation, to me anyway, about the reaction shots after a character commits an act of violence. There were NONE in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, or in few movies since the 1960s, it's true. It's despicably true, I might add. Robert Cummings has always annoyed me...it's something in his personality. Then I read something about his being a really obsessive health-nut and that kind of confirmed my feelings, ha! I know it's narrow minded, but men who watch every morsel of food they eat and are obsessed with diet and exercise have always turned me off big time. I would have found Aldo Ray more interesting in Saboteur but with Gary it could have become my favorite Hitchcock film of all time.
butterscotchgreer
ooh that is such a cute picture of gary and shirley angie!!!! frankie furters, i loved the screencaps of peter ibbetson. you got me in the mood to watch it again when i saw them heehee! i just love the beginning with them as children. they were so cute!!!! angie i cant wait to see pictures of you in your 30s outfit!! i am thinking of making an emperical dress and being elizabeth bennett for halloween. i just love those pride and prejudice dresses!! of course i love elizabeth bennett. heehee! it was either her or cherry (loretta young) from melody jones. heehee! and i do have a shirt exactly like one she wears in the movie too. but i really cant decide, and i better do it soon, halloween is just around the corner. coopsgirl
Here are pics of my 30s outfit. I resized them but we can't do previews anymore so hopefully they won't be huge. Anyway I can't wait to wear it, especially the hat!! I'm gonna do my makeup like Fay Wray in *Wax Museum* with earth and peach tones. I was practicing it this weekend and I got it to look pretty good. Here's a close-up of the shoes. I'm not sure how old they are but they looked like the right style so I got 'em. The size is marked 6 so I know they aren't as old as the style looks b/c typically in the 30s and 40s women's shoe sizes were two digit numbers, like they still are in Europe. I truly don't know how women used to wear shoes like this everyday. As beautiful as they are, they're just not worth the pain - ha!
butterscotchgreer
loverly pics angie!! when i saw you put that hat on, you were too cute in it. you looked just like fay wray....so you practiced the make-up just like hers? wow! ive been meaning to do my make-up like hers for some time, but every time i try i seem to mess it up, i bet you are better than i am at it. heehee! all us girls should have a model show wearing all of our vintage clothing. heehee!....and call it the gary cooper model show. heehee! we will be showing off for him. coopsgirl
I was so happy to find stuff that matched. I bought the dress and hat at the same place and got the shoes at a different store (Feathers, the same one you said you've bought shoes from before too). I've got some real pearl earrings and a bracelet that I'm gonna wear too. I've got lots of peachy colored nail polishes too so I will be totally color coordinated. I don't wear makeup that often so it took me a while to get it right but it's the exact same color scheme like Fay. It's good everday makeup too. I was gonna get some bright red lipstick like they wore a lot back then but I'd never have the guts to wear it everyday, it's just too flashy for me, and I didn't want to spend the money on something I'd only use once. This conversation is making me think of the hair styling stuff that me and April were talking about last Friday and she made a joke about this being Gary Cooper's Beauty Salon and now we got the Gary Cooper Modelling Agency - too funny!! butterscotchgreer
yeah i know i read about the gary cooper beauty salon, but never got a chance to comment on it. heehee! yall were cracking me up. i only wish.im telling you, we should start a partnership or something and start these businesses. heehee! just kidding. yeah i bought a pair of shoes at Feathers too. they are so cool! i wore them when i wore that vintage white dress my grandmama made for a prom...no it was my great aunt, her sister that wore it at the prom. anyway. i wore it to church on easter with those shoes and my hair was all up in a sixties style. i loved it. and i know what you mean about being color coordinated with everything. i do that all the time when i wear make-up and clothes, esp my skirts and hats and shoes. heehee! if i wear my red skirt, i wear a red, or black shirt that matches, and red nail polish, and red ear rings, and my red heals, and red lipstick. although i cant wear that red lipstick too often b/c it really is flashy on my too. heehee! but i love wearing it every once in a while. i bet you will look gorgeous, not like you already dont, but im just saying. FrankGrimes
Hiya, Sugar B -- I've got the screencap where Gary is laying down and Ann is leaning over him on my desktop. I really like that one myself. My favorites are these: As you can see, I had a strong emotional reaction to the female characters in the film. I'm a sucker for girls who are that loving, caring, and emotional. I absolutely love when Mimsey shows him that she still has the "little white dress" AND the broken doll is lying on the dresser. That's the kind of love that matters to me. Unforgettable love. I also like many of the Coop caps that I posted. The "it didn't come" is fantastic. I love his anger in the "she must have been worth it." The "ring" cap features my favorite dialogue in the film. I'll explain this further when I finally post my words on the film tomorrow night. When it gets to that part I talk to the tv (which I do quite a lot) and tell him 'it did come, it did come!'. That one made me laugh. I'm sure you talk to the screen during baseball games, too. The first time I watched that one I didn't really know what it was about, I was just working my way through the movies on that set b/c I had the day off b/c of the snow (it was my birthday too!). I read about your snowy b-day on this thread before I became talkative around here. I think that's a cute scenario. I was hooked from the beginning b/c the kids were so good. It's really a shame this isn't a more well known movie b/c it's practically flawless. I completely agree. I'll elaborate further tomorrow. Promise. I think Ann Harding did a good job of acting so it's not that that bothers me. It's hard to explain but it's just something about her voice that's a little too husky maybe. I think a more feminine, sweet voice would have fit the character better. Ann's husky voice can be a bit jarring, but I was kind of turned on by it. Yes, I'm screwy that way. I liked her eyes and blonde hair, so I was an easy target. She just connected with me. Of course this does not detract from the movie (like some of his other leading ladies who shall remain nameless - ha!) and is my only complaint. Ohhh, no. You're not talking about sweet Grace, are you? I still have to opine on the High Noon love triangle. It's on my "chores" list. They were talking too about Cloak and Dagger and how good the scene is where Gary is fighting with one of the bad guys in that little lobby inside the apartment buidling and just how vicious the fight scene is and that Gary's character ends up killing him by breaking his neck and choking him. The best scene in Cloak and Dagger is definitely Coop's fight scene. It's pure Lang. My favorite scenes in the film are the one's between Coop and Lilli Palmer. They are the most romantic of scenes in any Lang film I have seen to date. Very sweet. Whoops. I don't know how that last one snuck in there. I believe the dialogue in that final cap is, "Hello, Scott" and, "Hello, Gina." I could be wrong. Here are pics of my 30s outfit. I resized them but we can't do previews anymore so hopefully they won't be huge. Anyway I can't wait to wear it, especially the hat!! I'm gonna do my makeup like Fay Wray in Wax Museum with earth and peach tones. I was practicing it this weekend and I got it to look pretty good. Hey, I like your outfit. I can already picture you in it... and you look terrific. Great photos today. I liked one in particular. You know, the one with that blonde Brit. Yeah, that one. I also like the "bike for two" pic. Then they were talking about how Lang (who directed it) often had moments like that in his films where there was this kind of thoughful moment where characters process what they had done. This Lang fella, is he any good? Mademoiselle Malade -- Those screencaps from P.I. were a nice welcome back on a Monday. Je vous en prie. Soigne-toi bien. I'll finally speak about Peter Ibbetson tomorrow night. I have to talk about The Fountainhead, too. That is a very significant observation, to me anyway, about the reaction shots after a character commits an act of violence. There were NONE in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma, or in few movies since the 1960s, it's true. It's despicably true, I might add. Tu: enfourcher son cheval de bataille. Moi: ?bloui par... vous excite. I can't see Cummings turning too many gals on. He lacks magneticism and charisma. He's very "blah" as a leading man. I do like him in Saboteur, though. Pardon me, as I get back to counting my cals and carbs. Now where did I leave off... Oh that's right, I have to do an extra 20 miles now after eating too much Devil's Food cake. Sweet & Pretty with Puppy Dog Eyes -- you know more words frankie!!! Are you sure? I may need to borrow a few from you. How about I borrow one of your sentences: I could spend an entire year writing about Miss Goddess' wonderful qualities and I wouldn't come close to scratching the surface. Okay, maybe I can try to find some other words. Did I use "impetuous" yet? Oh. How about, "exalter"? frankie furters, i loved the screencaps of peter ibbetson. you got me in the mood to watch it again when i saw them heehee! i just love the beginning with them as children. they were so cute!!!! Thanks. Didn't you just watch the film, Sweet Tea? I think you actually watched it a couple days before me. By the way, is it true, your mom actually cried during The Sound of Music? Has she gone soft all of a sudden? I don't think anyone can match your softness, though. You cry all over the place... and that's another reason why I like you. all us girls should have a model show wearing all of our vintage clothing. coopsgirl
It may just be my warped mind but during the beginning scenes of *Peter Ibbetson* I always picture a crew member just off camera threatening to destroy one of those kids favorite toys to make them cry. They just seem so genuinely distraught. I'm sure it was just good acting on their part but I can't help but get that weird mental picture in my mind of somebody holding a cigarette lighter next to a cute, helpless teddy bear. Love the screencaps from *Cloak and Dagger* but I was not ready to be slapped in the face this early in the morning with somebody gouging their fingernails into Gary's face...thanks. I get so genuinely upset every time somebody hurts him in a movie. Heck, if they even bad mouth him I get riled up. I watched *High Noon* again last night and there's one part where Lloyd tells Gary 'you've been washed up for over a year now' and I get so mad at him for saying that. In *Bright Leaf* one guy keeps calling him white trash and they called him a tramp so many times in *Meet John Doe* I lost count. I just yell at the tv 'he's not a tramp!'. As much as I talk to the tv when I'm watching movies it's way, way worse when a game is on. I'm surprised I'm not hoarse by the time they're over, especially if it's going badly which happened a lot this year for my 'stros. Trash talking is part of the fun though, of course it's not so much fun when you're directing it towards your own team . However, my Sugarbritches could go 0-for-infinity and I'd still cheer for him :x . *I can't see Cummings turning too many gals on. He lacks magneticism and charisma. He's* *very "blah" as a leading man.* I'm more familiar with him from old TV shows and I really can't picture him as a leading actor. A good supporting actor probably but he does seem a little to bland to stand out as a star. I was looking him up and I noticed he was in *Souls at Sea* as a character named George Martin. I don't remember seeing him in that movie and I've seen it several times. Yeah, I pay the most attention to Gary but I do actually notice other people in his movies . What April said about being turned off by fussy men like that made me think of an episode of *Seinfeld* where Jerry is dating one of Elaine's cousins and they go out to eat and she orders a steak or something like that and Jerry was in the mood for a light meal and he ordered a salad and she was quite put off by it. Then you can hear him thinking to himself 'why did I order a salad!!!'
butterscotchgreer
see angie i always thought the exact same thing when little kids cry in films. but then i watched that private screenings with margaret o'brien, and a few other child stars and recorded it. and they talked about how the crew made them cry. and robert osborne asked them if it was true that the directors told them that their dog had died, and margaret's jaw dropped. it was so funny. she said no they never did such a thing. heehee! what happend in margaret's case was that she loved junie allyson and they worked together a lot, and junie and her were known as the crying twins, and they sorta competed, well margaret did anyway. heehee! every time she was supposed to do a crying scene, she thought of junie and the tears just came down. it was too cute when she said that. heehee! some of the other child stars on there had their own ways of crying in the movies and it was interesting hearing all their stories. i loved it!! butterscotchgreer
frankie furter, you really are trying to make me cry with caps arent you? heehee! i love them!!!! you guys will never guess who i stumbled across last night.....i was watching one of my judy garland show episodes, and ken murray was a guest star on it. every time he comes on there he shows her and the audience one of his home movies, and in these home movies, he has tons and tons of stars on candid camera doing anything. i just love watching them all the time. it really is humorous. and when i was watching one of those home movies, it was of a whole bunch of stars from the thirties doing different sprts between making their movies, and guess who popped up? GARY!!! he was scuba diving off a boat, with no shirt on, and the camera focused on him for a few minutes. i thought i was gonna faint. heehee! i must have not nitced him in it before, or i just forgot about it. usually when i watched those, i just turn them up real load and go cook dinner so i can sing and laugh to them with judy. heehee! so i dont get to see all of it too much. coopsgirl
*It's perverse but I think Gary was so sensual in Friendly Persuasion. They should have re-titled it The **** Quaker.* That almost made me laugh out loud!!! Trust me there is nothing wrong with that and you aren't alone. He was so adorable and hot at the same time. I love to see him in that role of regular family man b/c he didn't play it very often. I think this one and *Good Sam* might have been the only movies were he was married and had kids. *Casanova Brown* and *His Woman* are also adorable and kinda like that even though for most of those it's just him and the baby. The "mom" is more of an afterthought. *FP* is just such a great movie and one where I think everyone was perfectly cast. Gary and Dorothy McGuire made a very cute couple and I love the scene where Mattie is in the attic with Gard playing the organ and it goes quiet. Gary and Dorothy are sitting downstairs and she's sitting in his lap and she says she wonders what they're doing and he says something like 'maybe this' and he kisses her. I just love that they showed how much passion they still had for each other after being married around 18 years give or take a couple. The scene where they spent the night in the barn is another good one. The shirtless wood-chopping scene gets me every time too and I forget to breathe :x . It's really a shame they're not making more good family movies like this one anymore. They're just silly (and not silly funny, but silly stupid) mostly now. Here's the list of all the nominations and awards this one got. *Oscars* Best Actor in a Supporting Role Anthony Perkins Best Director William Wyler Best Music, Original Song Dimitri Tiomkin (music) Paul Francis Webster (lyrics) For the song "Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love)". Best Picture William Wyler Best Sound, Recording Gordon R. Glennan (Westrex Sound Services) Gordon Sawyer (Samuel Goldwyn SSD) Best Writing, Best Screenplay - Adapted Michael Wilson: Due to being blacklisted Michael Wilson did not receive a screen credit, which under special Academy by-law made him ineligible personally although the writing achievement itself could be eligible. In early 1957 AMPAS instructed Price Waterhouse & Co. not to list any nomination declared ineligible under the by-law and thus this nomination was not included on the final voting ballot. The by-law was laster declared unworkable in January 1959.
