coopsgirl
*he was scuba diving off a boat, with no shirt on, and the camera focused on him for a few minutes. i thought i was gonna faint.* I'm surprised you didn't!! Oh I'm so jealous. Next time you come over you gotta bring that. If it's on a dvd I could try copying it onto my PC and then I could put it up on youtube. That way everbody can enjoy the shirtless Gary goodness :x .
MissGoddess
I just love that they showed how much passion they still had for each other after being married around 18 years give or take a couple. The scene where they spent the night in the barn is another good one. The shirtless wood-chopping scene gets me every time too and I forget to breathe Those are primarily the scenes I was thinking of. It is a lovely film. The scenes at Marjorie Main's man-starved farm are funny, too.
coopsgirl
I love Marjorie Main, she was always great. Just another one of those wonderful character actors that no matter how small the part, always added something good to the film. I love the part where they're singing and she gets upset and looks over at the pic of her dead husband and Gary points up to the sky and she shakes her head no and points down to the ground then looks over at the fire. Gary reaches over to pat her on the arm and she pulls away from him and gets this scowly look on her face as she thinks about her dead hubby. Great scene!! Her daughters may have been chasing after Anthony but you know they really wanted Gary, it just wasn't in the script that way - ha!
MissGoddess
I'm sure Friend Cooper rustled the feathers in many a hen house. I thought the German poster below was interesting because they definitely didn't seem to be marketing this as a gentle family film but were maintaining the sterner Cooper image. coopsgirl
Beautiful pic, it's rustling my feathers right now!! ^keyboard short circuits from the drool falling on it^ I love pics of him on horses. It's funny that they chose to advertise the movie in a more dramatic tone. I mean it is a drama, but it had light moments too.
MissGoddess
Below I copied part of the DVDBeaver review of Friendly Persuasion, which does bring up an interesting point about a contradiction in the story. I think part of the reason behind that may be that the studio or the producers were worried about putting Gary into a situation where he would look weak or afraid to fight so they compromised. I love the the movie's theme song myself, but I have always disliked Pat Boone and I agree that he should not have gotten near this movie. All this ties in with the European poster and the acclaim which Europeans in general honored this movie---they saw it as something more interesting and possibly deeper than just a "family film". However, I still like the home-spun opening titles. Totally innocent and wholesome on the exterior, the film does suffer slightly when put under the microscope. The non-violence pretension seems to be forgotten in many scenes. The violence at the Fair is stopped with further violence, even the Mother, Eliza's protection of the family pet brings her to violence. They all believe harming their fellow man is wrong, but that doesn't stop them to varying degrees. They never seem to suffer any consequences for their behavior. Dimitri Tiomkin produced a wonderful soundtrack that extensively helps the atmosphere although the choice of song and singer ( Pat Boone ) for the opening and closing credits show glimpses of the formulaic Hollywood machine striving for mediocrity. The same holds true for the titles, which like the Pat Boone cloying ditties do not do this grand film justice.
coopsgirl
Pat Boone's version of the beautiful theme song is horrible. I wish they had let Gary sing it. My fave version is the one Dinah Washington did. She's one of my fave singers. They bring up a good point about them not always sticking to their peaceful ways but I think that just makes them seem more like real people. If they were perfect, it wouldn't be believable, heck that might even make them unlikeable. There are times when they give in and times when they stand by their beliefs. I was just thinking a little while ago about how similar Gary's characters are in *Friendly Persuasion* and *Sgt. York*. They're both peaceful Christians trying to live life abiding by those principles. In *Sgt. York* he decides to fight b/c by taking a few lives he was able to save many, many more. The real Alvin York always regretted having to kill anyone and even on his deathbed was still asking God for forgiveness. In *FP*, his character has the opportunity to kill the soldier who killed his friend Sam. Killing him wouldn't help anyone else like in *Sgt. York*, and he resists the temptation to take revenge. MissGoddess
Boone had a decent voice but no depth and he always struck me as a bit of a pervert. I remember when he came on one of the music awards shows wearing black leather---I was truly "grossed out". Even as a child I had an unaccountable, instinctive aversion to him. I found the still from FP which that poster was evidently based on.

Nasty guy at work has also been real bad today hacking up a lung and constantly blowing his nose. I can't turn my music up any louder or I'll have permanent ear damage . coopsgirl
There's no way I'm talking to nasty guy. I work hard at not even making eye contact with him so I'm sure not gonna actually start a conversation with him. It wouldn't do any good anyway, he makes all kinds of nasty noises constantly. Part of me feels a little bad for him b/c there's clearly something wrong with him but he's just so unlikeable and weird. He looks kinda like Heminway too just fyi. Of course I think practically all old guys with grey hair and beard who are kinda chunky look like Hemingway - ha! That's cool about Brendan. I wish there were some cute guys here. My building has five floors and there ain't a good looking guy on any of 'em!!! Most of them are old enough to be my dad anyway.
coopsgirl
I get tickled at how many songs make me think of Gary. Here's a beautiful song by Jo Stafford called *If*. Interesting bit of trivia, Jo was related to Alvin York on her mother's side. She was born in 1917 and is still alive too. I'm having d?j? vu and I'm not sure if I already told y'all that or not. Oh well if I have just ignore me - ha! *If* If they made me a queen I'd be but a slave to you If I had everything I'd still be a slave to you If I ruled the night Stars and moon so bright Still I'd turn for light to you If the world to me bowed Yet, humbly I'd flee to you If my friends were a crowd I'd turn in my need to you If I ruled the earth What would life be worth If I hadn't the right to you Now if only I could find a live, single man who made feel that way I'd be all set . butterscotchgreer
oh my goodness! i listened to jo stafford's version of pistol packin' mama as least 50 times today. heehee! i love it, i only wish i couldve gotten the andrews sisters version of it. heehee! okay okay it was only a suggestion to talk the nasty guy. heehee! ill never bring it up again. scouts honor, although i dont know if that would work, b/c i have never been a scout. heehee! nowi am gonna look up that jo stafford song, b/c it sounds too cute! coopsgirl
Well I was finally able to rip a copy of *Peter Ibbetson* from the dvd onto my computer. I had had trouble with that one before but now I got it. I've been wanting to mak a slideshow for that one using the *Marble Halls* song that is in the movie and for years has been one of my fave songs. The version I have is 4 minutes so that will make a good one. I'm gonna start working on it today and who wants to place a bet that I get it finished before Frank puts up his review of the movie - ha!
MissGoddess
Angie, that song should go perfectly with Peter Ibbetson!

FrankGrimes
Coop's Peepshow, I mean, Slideshow Girl -- I'm gonna start working on it today and who wants to place a bet that I get it finished before Frank puts up his review of the movie - ha! I think you will beat me to the punch, Coopsy's Girl. My cousin wants to show me and other family members his two boys (one is soon to be 4 and the other is 2 1/2) in their Halloween costumes this evening. They are Batman and Robin. Now that makes my heart go pitter patter. I know I broke my promise yesterday. Get used to it. I will post my thoughts on Peter Ibbetson later tonight. Promise. I've got to talk about The Fountainhead, too. Have you finished that one yet? ButtersmoochGreer -- And don't for one second believe I'm gonna let the mention of Brendan slip by me. It's ABOUT TIME one of these Texas boys noticed those cute puppy dog eyes of yours. Miss Gary -- Quaker ****? There's only one of those:
coopsgirl
The little kids are always the cutest at ones at Halloween and I'm sure your cousins will be adorable. The cutest one we got last year was a little boy dressed like Spiderman. He couldn't have been more than 4 and he had one of the costumes that had muscles in it and it was cracking me up. I had some big fake spiders out front and he was scared of them and didn't want to come up to the door and even his mom got tickled that Spiderman was afraid of the spiders. He asked me if they were robots and I told him they were just fake ones and finally he was okay with it and he came up and got some candy. No I still haven't finished *The Fountainhead*, maybe one of these days though. As far as Quaker hotties, I think Gary still holds that title pal!! FrankGrimes
Coop's Goil -- He couldn't have been more than 4 and he had one of the costumes that had muscles in it and it was cracking me up. That's what the Batman costume was; full of muscles. The Dynamic Duo never looked any cuter than they did tonight. I even got to see Princess Ariel. My cousin's (another cousin) 7-year-old daughter is going as the red-headed mermaid. She's gonna be a boy killer, that one. No I still haven't finished The Fountainhead, maybe one of these days though. Here I am watching Coop films and you are using the word "maybe." Maybe? Ohh, come on now, Blousey. 'Round third base and head for home. Hey, maybe Sugarbritches is blocking the plate. As far as Quaker hotties, I think Gary still holds that title pal!! Okay, all right. You can have your Coop Quaker **** and I'll have my Grace. Here comes a little test of faith. Would you believe me if I told you that I have written half of my Peter Ibbetson thoughts? I ended up running out of time tonight and I cannot complete it until tomorrow. I've actually had to save my post in a PM draft so that I can pick up later. You don't believe me? I wouldn't, either. Truth be told, it's the truth.
butterscotchgreer
angie!! woohoo! those are some of the best screencaps i have seen of gary, heehee! of course i love your screen caps too frankie furter. and brendan doesnt really notice me. we talk a lot, and he has a gorgeous smile, but i dont really think he knows im alive half the time. heehee! coopsgirl
*'Round third base and head for home. Hey, maybe Sugarbritches is blocking the plate.* If he was blocking the plate I'd be out for sure b/c I'd jump up on him and give him a big hug :x . You never know though, he may be momentarily stunned and drop the ball - ha! Actually on a sad Sugarbritches note, his home in San Diego is in the line of fire (literally) and they may have to evacuate. We have some other current and former Astros who live around there and they've already had to leave. Ausmus said they were all packed and ready to go then they were told yesterday they wouldn't have to leave just yet. Haven't heard anymore news today though. Up until a couple months ago my dad lived in that area too but now he's got a new job in Houston so he's back home, thank goodness. Alright now TV's Frank (ha!), don't be picking on me about *The Fountainhead*. I've still seen lots more Gary movies than you. When you've got a few more under your belt maybe (yes I said maybe) I'll watch the rest of it. I'm sure not gonna start from the beginning though so it probably won't even make sense. Who am I kidding, it still won't make sense even if I watched it all the way through - ha!
CoopfanDan
Gary Cooper quotes: "In my whole life I've never had a woman so much in love with me as Ingrid Bergman was. The day after the picture ended I couldn't get her on the phone." "Nothing I've done lately, the past eight years or so, has been especially worthwhile. I've been coasting along. Some of the pictures I've made recently I'm genuinely sorry about. Either I did a sloppy job in them, or the story wasn't right. (1960)" in 1960] "People hang on after they should quit, because the urge to act stays with you. Sometimes in the middle of a scene I find myself saying a piece of dialog from 15 years ago. I've thought of retiring lots of times, but then I think I would just go nuts, and probably spend all my time searching for a really great Western script." "Naturally, the nearer the character you play comes to the character you are, the more authenticity you give it. You are not acting so much as being. The result is realism." "Naturalness is hard to talk about, but I guess it boils down to this: You find out what people expect of your type of character and then you give them what they want. That way an actor never seems unnatural or affected no matter what role he plays." "Movie acting is a pretty silly business for a man because it takes less training, less ability and less brains to be successful in it than any other business I can think of." "Having to work hard never had any real appeal for me, and that may have some connection with me being in the movies." "This is a terrible place to spend your life in. Nobody in Hollywood is normal. Absolutely nobody. And they have such a vicious attitude toward one another ... They say much worse things about each other than outsiders say about them, and nobody has any real friends." "I don't like to see exaggerated airs and exploding egos in people who are already established. No player ever rises to prominence solely on talent. They're molded by forces other than themselves. They should remember this - and at least twice a week drop to their knees and thank Providence for elevating them from cow ranches, dime store ribbon counters and bookkeeping desk." [On Cary Grant] "I say he's a crack comedian, and isn't competition for me at all." "I've been with some good ones, but maybe the best was Franchot Tone. I made two pictures with him and he stole both of them. Something went wrong with how he was handled; or who knows, maybe it was Joan Crawford. But he had everything - great at comedy and also at serious stuff if given the chance. Now The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935) is one hell of a picture, but you could take me right out of it and it would still be one. But it couldn't be much without Tone." My favorite: ""All this business about me never saying anything is a piece of crap."
leobertucelli
I've always great admiration for Gary Cooper. What an understated performance he gave in '10 North Fredrick Street' Now I wonder if alive today he'd watch that continued round of Louie Malle films. ONE would have been enough. Thankfully I've other things to watch. For me the only film I could watch with sub titles is 'A Man & A Woman' AND, if tcm keeps throwing away nights as they been doing, well, whose minding the store? No one of any competence I am sure. Wake up people (programmers) Nobody's viewing in to watch!!!!
