msladysoul
Okay, classic movie fans, I have a topic of discussion that I like everyone would enjoy and it'll make us think. Let me see if I can explain this without being too long winded. We have our many sex symbols who teach ladies how to be sexy and be men's desire. But watching Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Alice White and countless of others, I come to the conclusion that they really weren't doing anything differently, what they did was done before them, with them and after them... all the sexual gestures, facial expressions, hands on hips and so on has been done before and the majority of women have nice shapes so why so much emphasizes put on them just because their on screen? Funny part about all this was these so-called sex symbols were either not interested in sex or lousy at it. There's like a double standard for women and men, actresses who were sexy were typecast as that and had to continue to be a sex symbol and not given the chance to be a true actress, while the male actors could be sexy but be considered a great actor. Also, we tell our youths not to put so much importance into sex, looks and clothes, basically outer appearance, yet we put those same importance on stars and idolize them for it and follow them or disregard ones if they lack. Youth always followed stars appearances to achieve their so-called perfection, yet, many Hollywood stars had to achieve it themselves through plastic surgery, makeup, or other drilling procedures. We tell youth the inside is important but the movie stars who are the role models and always have been of America make them disregard the inside but the outside. Also, women for many years have fought not to be looked at as sexual objects, only here to just satisfy men, yet most of our influential icons glorified being a sexual being like Marilyn Monroe and Mae West. Ladies with morals and values, dare I say clean aren't considered icons. Does this say something about our society? Mae West spoke sexy, put her hands on her hips, said enticing quotes and the whole world went crazy. If you can get famous for doing just that, I should be a star. LOL. Basically good girls don't make it as big as the sex symbols that WE make stars, so what does that say about us? Maureen O'Sullivan, a beautiful, wholesome, "good" girl type that any man would love to marry isn't as highly remembered as Jean Harlow, why? Because O'Sullivan wasn't a sex symbol. Are there two types of women to men? The kind you marry and the kind you have fun with? Would men have like O'Sullivan to be like Harlow or Monroe? Our sex symbols did what we thought, said what we wouldn't dare, especially back in the so-called innocent era. They were considered daring when it came to sex and even now. Do any of you find the label, sex symbol degrading or demeaning? To me, it means, just something that's good for sex. I guess that describes some of the icons because some never did anything else but the label sex symbol seems to degrade some to me but the term sex symbol is glamourized. Why are sexual women so looked up to? Sexy women been around for ages, nothing new. Yet, if an average woman on the street acted the way women do on screen, we be labeled a tramp or **** yet in Hollywood your labeled a sex symbol and goddess. I guess it's natural for a woman to be sexy, its quite easy, men are going to be turned on regardless, if you sit a certain way, a man is turned on. I guess it will never go out of style being sexy but sometimes the sexual acts seem unnecessary. I sometimes cringe when I read what ladies like Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, Jean Harlow, Lana Turner said in life, like why men just want them for sex or why can't men respect them. Duh? Have you seen yourself on screen? Women don't want to be looked at as just sexual objects yet we do things to give us that image and a lot of us want to be. Why is sex so applauded and famed? Because it's simple and easily understood? Its so easy to be sexy and turn on people but not easy to be a great actress. For instance, Susan Hayward and Bette Davis great dramatic actresses who weren't particularly interested in being sex symbols and being pretty and glamourous all the time aren't looked at as sex symbols. So having great acting talent and not being so sexual takes away the sex symbol label that men put on women. Seeing a woman tough, sure, confident, getting her way without being sexual is a turn off for some men who whether see a woman being sexy and sleep around to get her way. Does an actress lose femininity to men if she doesn't use sex? Many said Susan Hayward (a gorgeous, great actress) was so gorgeous to be distracting, isn't called a beauty much or sex symbol because of her toughness towards men on screen. She isn't on men's top list of sex symbols either, men would pick Marilyn Monroe over Susan anyday because of her willing and passive nature and you wouldn't have to work hard to get her. It seems sex symbols are more remembered than many true actresses like Gene Tierney and Myrna Loy who are held in such high regard, you wouldn't dare think a sexual thing about them. (Which brings up another topic who are the better class of women in Hollywood). Are the sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe famous for bringing sex out, making it comfortable, making it seem unsinful? I must admit the women in the classic era days made sex beautiful, enticing, even innocent and natural unlike today's actresses who make sex seem blatantly filthy, cheap and disrespectful. Ginger Rogers had her sexy moments on screen but even she was even sicken by today's type of entertainment, which has been going on for over 20 years. As Myrna Loy said "I admire some of the people on the screen today, but most of them look like everybody else. In our days we had individuality. Pictures were more sophisticated. All this nudity is too excessive and it is getting very boring. It will be a shame if it upsets people so much that it brings on the need for censorship. I hate censorship. In the cinema there's no mystery. No privacy. And no sex either. Most of the sex I've seen on the screen looks like an expression of hostility towards sex." So what is sexy? Is there a good sexy and a bad sexy? I have many questions so I would like everyone's input and various opinions.
