DwayneBrue
I have never seen the 1931 version of The Maltese Falcon. The movie has Ricardo Cortez as Sam Spade, does it follow the Classic Humphrey Bogart version? Thanks, Dwayne
vallo13
Adhering closely to Dashiel Hammett's story, sleazy detective Sam Spade seeks the whereabouts of a jewel encrusted statuette and his partner's cold-blooded killer, unaware the two quests may be related. Well received in its time, today it looks like a dress-rehearsal for John Huston's definitive version made ten years later. vallo
FredCDobbs
I like the 1931 version better. I like the actors better. The dialogue is almost identical, evidently taken directly from the book.

FredCDobbs
The original version, now titled ?Dangerous Female? is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 8, at 2 AM Eastern Time. This is a very good film.
JonParker
Ricardo Cortez and his oh so suave mannerism drives me nuts after a little while. I'm not sure I'd call it a very good film, but it's definitely a pre-code, so things like Sam's affair with Archer's wife and the homosexual relationship between Gutman and Wilbur are much more obvious than in the later version. So it's interesting and well worth watching, but as a film it's not even in the ballpark of the Bogey version.
DrNocturne
I'm going to deviate from the pack and say the Ricardo Cortez version is a heluva lot better than the Bogey version (with all due respect.) The pre-code edginess is what makes the movie and captures Hammett's atmosphere. It's a swell picture.
FredCDobbs
Doctor, I agree with you. If we see ?Dangerous Female? we finally realize that the Bogart version is nearly a carbon copy of the original movie, but the original is much more clear about the various relationships between the characters, because of the lack of code restrictions.
