West Coast feed effective May 1?

I read in today's San Diego paper "Turner Classic Movies will begin running a West Coast feed on May 1, meaning that the shows will air three hours later here than on the East Coast." Is this true? I guess this means if a film airs at 8 in the east, it will air at 8 in the west.

Oops, I guess I should look at TCM's home page once in a while:

TCM West Coast Feed Begins May 1st!

Starting May 1st, TCM will have a separate feed for the western half of the country. If you're in the Eastern or Central time zones, or you're a satellite subscriber, nothing will change.

If you're a cable subscriber in the Pacific time zone, the movie start-times will be the same as they are on the east coast. This means that regular franchises like The Essentials (8PM ET) and Silent Sunday Night (12AM ET) will be the same on both coasts.

If you're a cable subscriber in the Mountain time zone, the movie start-times will be one hour later than they are on the east and west coasts.

Back in the late 1950s, many TV programs and all magazines talked about what a wonderful life we would be living by the beginning of the 21st Century.

We would have CHEAP wall-sized flat TV screens.

We would all be working only 4-days a weeks and 6-hours a day.

Machines would make our jobs easier rather than putting most of us out of work.

We would all have computers at home and robots to do our housework.

None of our factories or businesses would be ?out-sourced? to China, India, or Mexico.

We would have giant ?super-stores? where we could go and buy anything, and everything would be cheap and made in the USA.

Our cars would run off of either cheap or free energy, either off atomic energy or off sunlight energy.

We would just wave our hands to turn on lights, to cook dinner, and to brew a pot of coffee.

We could cook turkeys and roasts in 3 minutes in a microwave oven, and the meat would be tender.

We wouldn?t have to steer our cars on long trips because electronic controls and speed and direction cables would be buried in all our highways.

Auto radar would keep our cars from running into each other.

Many of our buildings would be half a mile high, and everyone in the world would love us.

We could fly to the moon for a week-end outing. For a little extra money, we could fly to Mars.

There would be no poor people in the US because of all the social welfare programs, and everyone would have nice jobs at high pay.

We would have 150 TV channels to watch and all of them would be great channels.

We would all have portable telephones the size of a pack of cigarettes.

Nobody would get divorced because everyone would be so happy.

All teenagers would be geniuses, well-educated, and well-mannered.

We would all look really good and feel really good, no matter how old we are.

Well, it should make it easier on the schedule. No longer having to do two time zones, just saying 8PM and that's it.

Fred, interesting list. Some things have come true:

When I am in an office at work and I hear the little buzz that the lights are about to go off, I just have to wave my hands to keep them on (of course, people in the office building across the way probably think I am as crazy as hell).

We all have computers in the home.

Well, we have super stores but not the part of everything made in U.S.A.

We do have cars that run off energy.

We have microwaves, cel phones, and I look good no matter how old I am. (okay, so I lied about the last item.)

I don't like how the movie schedule will change. Now I need to tape the movies that I always watch like Silent Sundays and The "Imported" movies. It's a disappointment but I guess it makes their jobs easier.

I don't think it makes their job any easier, they still have to schedule the movies.

One reason so many cable stations go with the one programming grid for east and west coast is that many viewers forget about the time difference and end up missing programs because they looked at the schedule wrong. Often they will write to complain because

their first thought is usually that the channel screwed up when in fact, it was them.

Well, Fred. You can't have everything, but you can have this... if you find an old cell phone. :)

Wouldn't be great if TCM could pursade the cable companies and satellite services to carry both feeds like they do with some other channels. It would be easier for those of us who record a lot. Although I can't really see them giving up channel space for a non-commercial station since there isn't any commercial money get a cut from.

I know, even better, let's get TCM to have a TCM2 channel. One could show nothing but old films and the other could show "newer" old films, say 60s-70s and '80s. It might keep the bickering on these boards down.

Oh well, I can dream.

I'm torn about this. I was happy here on the West Coast that I didn't have to stay up extra late to catch movies, and now I have to adjust my sleeping schedule..

I wonder how much of it is due to the fact the PT schedule took FOREVER to be posted at the beginning of the year, so now they don't have to do fancy time conversions anymore (and neither do we, thank goodness).

It will be nice to have one scheduled time for everything, I guess...except for the Mountain Time people - more math! YAY!

Now if they can only figure a way to make promos for movies that are running in CANADA as well as the US! That would be a miracle.

Well, I kept telling myself that the perk of getting to watch movies earlier than the rest of the country was *almost* (but not quite) worth all the "Poor Quality Signal" screens I get.

So, with this time change, I hope the quality of the new cable feed to PT will be better to make up for this schedule shift.

Hey Fred..speaking of things promised and never delivered...I've always wondered...since there never is enough money in the world, and we invented money, how come we can't just press more of it?

I don't think it makes it easier for TCM either. And, I think it makes more work for lots of other people. I'm interested in seeing how the newspapers handle it. We get a weekly T.V. magazine in the Sunday paper. It lists the titles and times of all the movies on a nice grid -- and it even includes TCM. But after the change, the airing times are going to be different for those of us on cable as opposed to those on satellite. I hope the newspaper doesn't just throw their arms up in despair. I'm wondering if they'll just drop the whole line-up for TCM.

One thing that I have noticed in all my travels to different cities as of late is that the tv grids in the newspaper are geared more towards network and cable viewers than those who have satellight.

Here in Los Angeles and other parts of the southwest, for example, in the daily and weekly tv grids, it says History Channel will be airing Modern Marvels at 7:00 pm. For those with cable, Modern Marvels airs at that time. For those of us with DirectTV, Modern Marvels actually airs at 8:00. If it's something we want to watch on what is considered basic channels (aside from network and movie channels) we always check the actual satellight guide to find out when a show is actually airing on many of the basic channels. This does not happen with every channel but does happen with some.

So, if you have cable the newspapers grids will probably be accurate for you even after May 1st.
