Any Laurel and Hardy Fans out there?

I am having a relapse of MS and couldn't sleep last night. I turned on the TV and there they were. I lterally had to put the blanket over my mouth, I was laughing so hard. Didn't want to wake my hubby up. I love those two.

I am a big Laurel and Hardy fan. Their Music Box short film is a classic. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt. My mother, her nursing aide and myself watched it one night and we all just about fell on the floor from laughing so hard! My mother laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes and the nursing aide and I were complaining about our bellies hurting from laughing so hard. Stan Laurel was a comedic genius. If you watch one of their films very closely, you can see that their comedic routines were choreographed just like a dance routine would be. Every little step would lead the way to a pratfall or a conk on the head. Another funny short film is one where Stan visits Ollie in the hospital and Ollie is in a leg cast. Need I say more!

You're right. They are selling Christmas trees. I got it years ago on a VHS tape. The gradual destruction of their car and Finlayson's house is so matter-of-fact. There is no attempt to stop anything only the continued assault on each other's property. Since it's a silent you're not likely to see it anywhere but TCM unless you find it on a DVD colllection.

I think the really classic part of their type of humor was the way they stand by and wait while someone else would do something to them. Then that person would stand by and wait until they did their bit against them.

Case in point, Hollywood Party and the sequence with L&H and Lupe Velez. They would do something to her and then Hardy would just stand there while she would place an egg on his person and smash it. Then he would do something to her. And so on.

Great stuff.

Hallmark no longer owns the Hal Roach library, as the company sold back the HR library back to RHI Entertainment, who originally owned the films back in the early 90s and the company did lease the films to cable tv and home video, so hopefully this might be some great news, considering that Hallmark did a very poor job in handling of the HR library.

But isn't RHI Entertainment headed by the guy who now owns Hallmark Entertainment and the Hallmark Channel? (Which is very different from owning the Greeting Card company or its vintage Hallmark Hall of Fame library).

Another Laurel And Hardy short I would love to see on DVD is, Twice Two where the boys play their own wives. This is classic L & H, and it was the last short directed by James Parrot. The other feature length film of Laurel And Hardy I would also like to see on DVD is Our Relations where they play their twin brothers.

Maybe Hallmark could put these on a L & H DVD collection.

Another terrific short with a family theme is "Brats." They play their own children. It's done on an oversize set. A good deal of it centers on them getting a bath and getting ready for bed.

I love the way Ollie is almost trying to figure out what will happen during those pauses. The way he looks at the camera as if to solicit sympathy is wonderful. Also the way Stan tries to help Ollie only to have the recipient retaliate to Ollie. One of my favorite bits is the laughing scenes. In "Blotto" and "The Devil's Brother" when they get laughing it's nearly impossible not to laugh.

We need more.

Regardless, all of the sound Hal Roach two reelers should be seen, either on tv or home video for that matter and I have the original 1930 release of "BRATS".The current print that is widley shown today, is the 1937 re-release with the team's tradmark derbys hanging on a hatrack, but the verison I have has the original 1929/30 HR title cards and in the begining of original verison, there is a funny title card(regarding Stan & Ollie's wives) that was edited in the re-release, as the current verison opens up with Stan & Ollie playing checkers. This print that I own is a fully restored 35mm print and was shown on German television, so you do have German subtitles, but you really don't notice(or pay)attention to it.

Since, I am a film collector, you should seem some of the other rare Roach "talkies", as I just got a couple(in a film trade) of rare Harry Langdon sound shorts he made for Roach during 1929 and 1930 and excellent prints as well, so if anyone sounds interested, just e-mail me.

It was interesting as I was learning about L&H to see that they made so many versions of the same movie for international release. It's interesting they chose that route rather than just dub them.

I admire people like you who have such a devotion to their hobby. Thanks for the info.

lzcutter-

You are correct about RHI. RHI stands for Robert Halmi. Robert Halmi Sr. is probably the most prolific producer of film entertainment in Hollywood today. He is the man responsible for many television films - from Lonesome Dove and Scarlett (the Gone With The Wind sequel) to the recent The Ten Commandments remake. A IMDB search will provide a very expansive list.

I am not exactly sure how the Hallmark/Robert Halmi relationship developed but, for all intents and purposes, they are the same company. At least they were last I heard. There was a recent profile of Robert Halmi Sr. in the New York Times (April 8th - available to subscribers only by this time) and there was a big profile in the LA Times years ago. The "most prolific producer in Hollywod" description came from the LA Times article. He is very much a modern day mogul - along with his son Robert Halmi Jr. - who is very "hands on" about all the films he produces.

Both he and his son are very decent and polite gentlemen.

oh yeah I love Laurel and Hardy. The music box was the first one I ever saw and I loved it. It used to be a tradition for my family to watch it on New Year's Eve. I also love the Ghost Ship one and the one where Stan pretends to be the heir of some millionare that died who was also named Laurel (with Ollie's proding of course) but they walk in on a murder mystery of who killed the millionare Laurel.
