MrWriteLA
Think of individual films they've directed...

MrWriteLA
Not what I was looking for. There's a more direct connection with Hitch as a director. (HINT: Two of the titles you mention are germane.)
MrWriteLA
I'll give you the first half of the answer: "They all directed a movie that..."
MarkMiller
So which two titles are germane? What is the common thread? I was going to say that they have all directed adaptations from well known playwrights like Ira Levin (Polanski, Lumet), Anthony Shaffer (Mankiewicz), Frederick Knott (Terence Young), but that would ultimately be a much longer list of directors. I am not there yet.
MrWriteLA
The two germane titles are "The Bad Seed" and "The Spiral Staircase."
MarkMiller
Heroines? Best supporting actress nominations? Characters with handicaps? Any more clues?
FredCDobbs
"They all directed a movie that..." ....had one word in the title.
MrWriteLA
No. (The list of directors would be much longer than that!)
MrWriteLA
"They all directed movies that Hitchcock ___________ __________."
FredCDobbs
"They all directed movies that Hitchcock ___________ __________." ... didn't like. ...refused to make. ....ate for breakfast.
MrWriteLA
:-) Close enough. They were all projects he TURNED DOWN. Go for it, Dobbsy.
MrWriteLA
And by the way, here's the list of the titles... Anastasia (Litvak) The Bad Seed (Leroy) Deathtrap (Lumet) No Highway in the Sky (Koster) Rosemary's Baby (Polanski) Sleuth (Mankiewicz) The Spiral Staircase (Siodmak) Wait Until Dark (Young)
FredCDobbs
I don't have any ideas right now, so you do another one. How about some lines from one of his movies, then we can try to guess the movie.
MrWriteLA
Okay, try this one... "That wasn't very sporting, using real bullets."

MrWriteLA
I know... too easy. Take it, Dobbsy.
JackBurley
He would've done a great job on Wait Until Dark. Actually, The Bad Seed seems to be up his alley. The villain hidden by her veil of seeming innocence in the guise of the "perfect little girl". Do you know why he passed on these, Mr.Wright?
FredCDobbs
Lol, the way you wrote it, it sounded just like Cary Grant. Ok, here is a line from a Hitchcock movie. Name the movie. ?Oh, I was carried away by her, enchanged by her, as everyone was.?
FredCDobbs
Ok, here's another line from the same film: ?I found out about it and I warned her that if he came here again I'd shoot them both.?
MrWriteLA
(Actually, it was James Mason's line. :-) ) I'm guessing "Rebecca."

FredCDobbs
Oh. Well, anyway, it was Rebecca. Your turn.
MrWriteLA
What makes Bernard Herrmann's score for "Vertigo" unique among all the scores he composed? (And I'm not referring to its content or its quality.)
MarkMiller
I think Hitch would have been a good fit for most of those films, but I cannot see him at the helm of "Anastasia." Also wasn't "Deathtrap" a little late for him? By the time it finally came out he had been dead for 2 years.
