The Adventures of Robin Hood" was based on the opera Robin hood by De Koven-Smith and a novel by Sir Walter Scott. Name the novel?

Except that it wasn't based on the operetta, or Ivanhoe. Screenwriters Seton I. Miller and Norman Reilly Raine based the script on the ancient ballads and legends, as it says in the film's Main Title. Though Warner's bought the rights to the operetta from MGM, which had planned to make it as a vehicle for Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald, they were determined that their film not be like any previous dramatization of the story, most particularly Douglas Fairbanks's 1922 film, directed by Alan Dwan (interestingly, Little John was played by Alan Hale, who played it in the Errol Flynn film, and the 1950 Disney version).

Inevitably, there are elements that're common to virtually all dramatizations of the story, but to say that the Errol Flynn film is based on the operetta or Sir Walter Scott's novel, is simply wrong.
