nickdimeo
There is certain information that you just dread hearing in your lifetime, a family member has died, you have been fired from your job, and Hollywood is remaking Casablanca with Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. I could just about believe my ears when I heard this last bit of info on Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. Believing that SNL isn't the most reliable news source I went surfing the internet and have found it was indeed true. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have secured the rights to star in the remake of Casablanca. What possibly can be done to stop this atrocity from taking place? The answer is nothing. All the protests, all the speeches, and all the negativity will not stop greed from **** a true Hollywood classic. So when the younger generation think of Casablanca it will now be Jen and Ben instead of Bogie and Bergman. Good job Hollywood!
Guest
I didn't hear about this! Is it true? Damn! You're right, it would be an atrocity! Just deplorable!
msladysoul
They shouldn't remake this movie. Leave a classic alone. Hollywood today is trying to mess up everything. They can't make their own classics.
Guest
Who in Hades does Jennifer Lopez think she is?
msladysoul
I know Siskel and that other guy, I forget his name, will give them bad reviews, they know the classic. All the movie will be filled with is sex scences, no real acting. They can't hold a torch to Bogie and Ingrid Bergman. I bet they'll turn over in their grave. Lauren Bacall should protest that. Guest
"Casablanca" has a magic to it. How do they expect to reproduce that magic? I'm glad we could find some common ground on something, swngsoul.
msladysoul
I just think its ashame. Ben cannot be Bogie, we can see that now, he can't even possess the talent that Bogie had in that movie. Lopez for sure can't be Ingrid Bergman. All I see what will happen with this film, is that they'll build it up and put all that money into it, then the movie won't be a success, and nickdimeo don't worry I think the young generation will see today that the movie won't be as good as the original. Hopefully, they'll air the original, to let the young people today see how much of a classic it is. I wonder why don't they show classics in movie theaters anymore, instead of watching it at home. Its nice at home, but I would love to go see a classic in a theater, I hear in California, they have a theater, where they show classics. That would be fun classics competing with the new movies today.
nickdimeo
I don't mean this as a racial slur or anything but I kinda think that a Puerto Rican actress would be hugely miscast in a WW2 setting.
Guest
I dislike Ingrid Bergman and I'm still offended by Jennifer Lopez thinking she can re-create Ilsa!
Guest
And Ben Affleck portraying Rick? That's absolutely criminal!
movieloverny
There is an online petition "urging" this very bad idea not to come to fruition. Not that it will actually stop anyone from doing anything, but it does feel good. http://www.petitiononline.com/no2jlo

moviejoe79
VERY SAD NEWS - and on top of that, let me say that Jen and Ben have got their egos WAY too inflated. I know they think they're the queen and king of the entertainment industry, but c'mon now - they should know better than to try and remake a film that is absolutely perfect, a film that rises above most of the other films that have ever been made. Hopefully some of the Hollywood heavyweights will try and talk them out of it. People like Martin Scorsese, and Woody Allen, who respect the film. And racism be damned - you CANNOT have a hispanic woman play Ingrid Bergman's character - it just doesn't work - period. They will probably try to bring it up to date - but I don't see how that could work either. This reminds me of that remake of "Psycho" a few years back - I didn't even see it as a matter of principle, but I heard that it didn't do too well. Hopefully this won't either. lolmsted23
I've talked to some people who are not classic movie fans like us and they, too, are appalled at the idea of there being a remake at all, but especially with those two. Hopefully this will be a good indication of how the general public feels, and not just us die hard fans.
flickerknickers
Remaking "Casablanca" has been the dream of many a minor and major film star and studio for five decades. The latest version I read about in today's NY Post was for Vin Diesel to star as Rick, to have Britney Spears or Demi Moore as Ilsa. It would be updated to the Persian Gulf War. Liz Smith said today in her column that "Bye, Bye Birdie" will be remade. Eminen is being sought to play Conway Birdie. Britney or Mandy Moore will do the Ann-Margaret type. Other remaks being actively pursued are: "Viva Las Vegas," "Guys and Dolls," "Singin' in the Rain," etc.
Guest
Vin Diesel? Britney Spears? Demi Moore? I just got a second wave of nausea. Hollywood has outlived its worthiness to entertain.
itsoshoko
This whole idea of a Casablanca remake sickens me. In general, I can't stand remakes. If you can't come up with an original idea, you don't belong in Hollywood. Also, Ben and Jen scare me enough, but just as much would be who would direct this atrocity, most likely some awful practically porn director like Adrian Lyne ("9 1/2 Weeks") and how many times will they stick the f-bomb in? And what about Sam? I'm sure he's not just gonna stick to "As Time Goes By" with that cast. Well, here's lookin' at some Golden Raspberries, kid. moirafinnie12
Holy cats, I couldn't believe this report until I saw it in print today in the Boston papers! There might be a silver lining though--J Lo & Ben Affleck's first teaming, in something called "Tough Love", (originally called "Gigli") has had horrendous response from a series of preview audiences. Scenes are said to have been reshot, the title was changed and the release date for this epic keeps being pushed back--currently to August. If their first appearance together is likely to be such a dud, perhaps their 15 minutes of fame, (and financing), will be past sooner than they can remake "Casablanca". Oh, why can't they declare that movies are historical landmarks like buildings, so that no one can touch them anymore?? :-(
captainot
When I read about the JLo / Affleck possible remake of "Casablanca", I was immediately reminded of the famous quote from "Apocalypse Now": "The horror... the horror"
spencerl964
To captainot, I reckon' you posted this? But exactly where did you hear that this was officially gonna' be done? & had gotten the "Green-Light"/ Studio backing, etc. Because I get "EW" magazine. As well as surfing new flix online-(mostly for future OSCAR-predix!) & also do the same on tv. When the rare occassion happens & I'm not watching TCM! "E news"/ ET & even sometimes: "Access Hollywood." Even get the daily e-mail of Hollywood Reporter. & I certainly hope it's a rumor!? Because to even re-make the masterpiece/epitome of Hollywoods Dream Factory & Studio System, when everything works to pure perfection! & It's Screenplay, is probably the all-time greatest in itself! But, if Lopez & dull boy Affleck or even gonna' attempt this????? I just hope it's more publicity they wanted for themselves? You probably know, that there was a tv-series-(short lived) in late l970's early 80's with actor: David Soul, that tried to recapture the magic of *"CASABLANCA!" & It of course failed miserably. Many on here may know this, but *BOGEY was actually about 5'8. & wore 2 inch lifts in his shoes. George Raft, was just 1 of whom spoke of it, when they shot: "Invisible Stripes." Raft was 5'9 & they did a shower-scene in prison/with stalls? Anyway, he was about an inch taller when they had no shoes on. But once dressed *BOGART was taller then Raft? & In *"CASABLANCA," the legendary actor had his violent-wife Mayo Methot, standing on sidelines. & he was terrified of her. Very violent fights-(she eventually drank herself to death in '52) But *INGRID BERGMAN, whenever she was asked about him, hardly had anything to say. Because he'd get through the scenes together, fast & vanish. So Mayo, did'nt get jealous/mad,etc. & *BERGMAN was a pretty big lady & he actually stood on what was called either, apple carts or orange crates, particularly at the Burbank/Glendale Airport scene/ending! In what must rank as one of thee all-time greatest movie endings! Several actors used the same type of devices. Particularly the matinee idols: Alan Ladd, whom was about 5'6 at best & It's rumored that is one of the main reasons he committed suicide!? & also Tyrone Power, I've heard used lifts in his shoes. All smoke & mirrors. But I certainly hope & I kinda' think, it's B.S. about that re-make! No disrespect intended to you captainot! (NOTE: Here is some trivia on hgt. wgt., etc. When I was at "Grauman's Chinese Theatre," *JOHN WAYNE had his foot-prints in the cement. Well, they were ridiculously small, especially for the "DUKE," who was 6'4 & 1/2? I had to look it up, I thought possibly he just put his Cowboy Boots in the cement? Nope, it was his actual feet & size! 5 & 1/2 shoe size!!!)
loliteblue
May Boggie and Bergman roll over in their graves and say no blank blank way!! When i get off the computer I'm gonna watch my remastered collector's edition version in protest!!!! CASABLANCA- 1943 BEST PICTURE FOREVER!!!!! alix1929
Say it ain't so! I would refuse to watch it, if it ever does **grace** the silver screen. If they want to introduce the story to a whole new generation, re-release the Bogart/Bergman film to theatres. That version, although over 60 years old, is a timeless classic.
