jf51381
Hello fellow fans, I am elated to see that TCM is saluting Ms. Astor on May 3 by screening a slew of her movies. She is one of the best, and I have not seen any of the films scheduled. My little problem is that I do not currently have TCM, so I was wondering if anybody would be so kind enough as to record the films for me and ship them over to my address in New York. I am only too happy to pay for the videotapes or dvds as well as the shipping costs. You may reply her or write me at jcforte03@yahoo.com Also, is anybody in the NY area planning to attend the B Noir Festival at Film Forum starting on May 4? They will be projecting a total of about 70 movies during a 6-week period! I plan on attending as many as I can. After those six weeks, they will be starting a Billy Wilder festival. Have a nice weekend, all! --Jonathan
gagman66
jf51381, I will definitely be recording TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS (1927) to DVD-R, Wednesday morning! Although, I could swear the actual title was THREE ARABIAN KNIGHTS? I was under the impression that TWO ARABIAN KNIGHTS was a completely different movie? After frustratingly losing my signal for about 25 minutes right in the middle of the broadcast when this film first debuted in 2004, I waited a long time for TCM to air this picture again! Thanks so much TCM for finally re-airing this movie! I appreciate it very, very much! I?m also quite anxious to see UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (1927), on Tuesday evening. I have never seen this film before, and I believe that it is probably another TCM debut? To be honest, I wasn?t really planning on recording the other Mary Astor films in this salute? I will see what I can do for you though?
jf51381
Hey gagman66, Don't even worry about it. I do appreciate your response, though. I hope to have TCM in a few months's time, so maybe the movies will be shown again. Thanks again! --Jonathan
vecchiolarry
Hi Jonathan, Thanks for remembering Mary Astor's 100th birthday. I'm sure she'd be thrilled that she has so many fans even after all this time. There was a time when I thought that I was the only person who remembered these old stars, but TCM and this message board has re-enforced my acknowledgement that the old stars were the real stars and deserve to be remembered. Happy 100th, Mary!! Larry
sandykaypax
I became a fan of Mary Astor when my mother took me to see LITTLE WOMEN at a showing at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I was so dismayed to hear that she didn't care for the role! I thought she was perfect. I'm recording some of the Mary Astor pre-codes today and look forward to watching the younger Mary on film. She was a lovely lady. Thanks TCM for showing these! Sandy K
vecchiolarry
Sandy, I met Mary Astor at a party at Marion Davies home when Mary was doing "Little Women". A couple of weeks later, my grandmother and Lady Lawford and I went to have lunch at MGM with Peter Lawford. Granny and LL ended up going with Peter (I never really did meet him!) and I went with Mary to her dressing room for a snack. That's how I got to know her a little better than some of the other old stars that I knew. She was a more intelligent version of a movie star than a lot of the others. No, she didn't really care for her role in "Little Women" but when I saw the film, I thought everybody was very good, including her. She certainly could out-act anybody off the screen today, couldn't she!!! You'll love her in her younger days, she was a real beauty and more of a star in the silents than in her talkies. After her first husband died, she drank and cast her movie status to the wind; but she did do several really good roles even though she professed not to care much. I have always loved her, even when some others dropped her. Her only real friend in Hollywood continued to be Agnes Moorehead. Mary went on the stage later because of Agnes..... I'm glad your mother took you to see "Little Women"; she did you a favour and sounds like a great mother.... sandykaypax
Larry, thanks for sharing that memory of Mary Astor. You lucky dog, you, to have known her and so many from the Golden Age of Hollywood! My mother was one of the reasons that I got into classic film. She was born in 1931 and would tell me about going downtown into the big movie palaces in Cleveland to see Shirley Temple movies, and whatever else was playing then. She thought that I would like Margaret O'Brien, so that was why we went to see LITTLE WOMEN. I'll never forget it! Sandy K
SUSAN
Although I have always admired Mary Astor as an actress, my recollection of her comes from a story she related in her autobiography. She met John Barrymore while making Beau Brummell and they had quite a torrid affair. Years later they met again on a movie set, or rather, as Miss Astor relates, she saw him sitting on the set looking quite lost, clearly past his matinee idol days. She sat by him and started to talk, resting her hand on his. ?Don?t?, Barrymore said, turning away with tears in his eyes, ?My wife, Elaine, is quite jealous.? She sat with him a bit longer, until he was called away. I still remember the poignancy with which she related that moment and I haven?t read that book in 20 years or so. For that and so much more, a belated Happy 100th Birthday, dear Mary.
