Favorite music from non-musicals

Recommended Posts

Four movies that I would watch just for the soundtrack:

American Graffiti

Good Morning Viet Nam

The Big Chill

Forrest Gump

I'm only including non-musicals. There are others in other genres, but these are my top four. What would you list as your top favorites?

One that I could think of just off the top of my head is The Secret Garden (the newer one from the '90s). It has such hauntingly enchanted music in it that matches the mood of the movie perfectly.

Another would maybe be That Thing You Do! I love the songs that are in it but this movie could almost be considered a musical in a way I guess.

I like a lot of movie music. Practically every song from every Disney movie, but especially the music from "The Aristocats", "Cinderella" "Cruella De Ville" from 101 Dalmations, "The Jungle Book" and Randy Newman's "Toy Story" music.

Just about all of Mancini's music is good, especially "Charade" "Breakfast at Tiffany's" "Hatari" and "The Pink Panther"

And call me predictable, but I love most of John Williams' scores--"Star Wars" "Indiana Jones" movies, "ET" and the Harry Potter music--I even bought the soundtrack from the third HP movie and I've had "Star Wars" on vinyl since the seventies.

Music that I find myself thinking of and humming all the time is from 1990's "The Grifters" with John Cusack and Anjelica Huston. Music by Elmer Bernstein. Film Directed by Steven Frears

I loved the music from The Constant Gardener. It is a newer movie but really good soundtrack. Apocalysp Now,Almost Famous. The music from Young at Heart Doris day sings great I would consider that a non musical as it is drama. Gig Young was in that one too.

If you don't have it may I suggest John Barry's album "Moviola." It has selections you mentioned but also a fine collection of film song titles from "Midnight Cowboy", "Born Free", "Chaplin" and some others. Lovely music all around.

On the new DVD of "Dances With Wolves" there is a documentary on the making of the film and there is a small section where they interview Barry about the music.

(I saw it on On Demand)
