FredCDobbs
2nd Version of ?Maltese Falcon?!!! Coming up tomorrow at 9:45 AM Eastern time. This is the Bette Davis version, titled ?Satan Met a Lady? (1936), with Warren William. This is a rare chance to see this version of the film. I don?t know if it?s any good or not, but I want to see it! johnnyweekes70
"I don?t know if it?s any good or not, but I want to see it!" Simply put, it's awful, and William's unbelievably hammy. You wouldn't even know it was a version of Hammett's book. Still, it's worth it to see what Davis finally wouldn't put up with anymore.
FredCDobbs
Thanks Johnny. Now I?ll be prepared. This seems to be one of those made-in-a-week films that William and Davis made dozens of in the ?30s. But I wanna see it, ?cause I like William and Davis. FredCDobbs
Ok, I just saw the film, and man was it terrible. They played the whole thing as a comedy!
johnnyweekes70
Too bad, really, given the cast and, particularly, its director, the hugely talented William Dieterle. He must have hated doing the picture so much he encouraged William to ham his way through the part just to make the days go by more interestingly. traceyk65
I taped it to watch tonight instead of the movies they programmed (why oh why can't they program good movies on Friday nights?) Don't know whether I'm looking forward to it or not. Sometimes things are so bad they are good...
vallo13
I agree Tracyk65, As a kid, Friday's used to be left over night. And it seems that TCM feels the same way. Giving us second rate or newer stuff on Friday evenings. During the morning hours of the week they show some of TCM's best. Most of us work and miss the good stuff, and when I'm home on Friday night, I usually watch DVD's or another channel. It wouldn't hurt to put on a couple of "A" films on Friday nights. I don't think TCM is worried about getting rating's like the Network channels. vallo
sweetbabykmd
I have brought up this point many times. For instance tonight we get Bad News Bears - yuck! I am a working person and it would be nice to turn on TCM on a Friday or even Saturday night and actually watch what is on, instead of watching DVDs of what was on at 2am yesterday. We have all these great Bette Davis movies this month, but the precodes and rare ones are shown between midnight and 6am, and you know those won't be repeated, just the ones shown at primetime that we have all seen many times already. vallo13
That's my point Sweetbabykmd, and I don't have a DVD recorder (yet). I just got a computer for my home. Most of my posts are from work (sssshhh, don't tell) I think TCM should mix up their show times so all the classics fans would be satisfied. vallo
JackBurley
I was mentioning this same issue last week in another thread; the curious phenomenon that all the movies I'm dying to see are broadcast between midnight and 6am. I was thrilled that Idiot's Delight was shown at a more civilized hour (8:30am) earlier this week. What a great way to start the day. It'd be swell if they'd repeat some of these wee hours oddities on Friday night. Emperor's Candlesticks, anyone?
johnnyweekes70
You're lucky, The Emperor's Candlesticks is on the 17th at 9:45am. In June, there's a slew of decent pictures being shown all night and at that dreadful 4:30/4:45am time-slot. More if you live in Canada. One huge benefit about living in Canada is that we don't get to see The Bad News Bears tonight; we get Gentleman Jim. Similarly, when many more recent pictures are shown that TCM has licenced, we get core-library replacements, many of which haven't been shown for awhile. Thankfully, Satan Met a Lady isn't one of them. Too bad Front Page Woman or The Girl from 10th Avenue isn't; I screwed up recording them.
rryan
I can't believe this - I thought I might be the only one! TCM is the 1st station I tune to whenever the tube is on. And I've been moaning about the schedule to all my friends for years now. I love the regular ol' classics we all know and rewatch 1000 times -- but what about all the movies I've never seen or only seen once that TCM buries in the wee hours of the morning?? Or the ones that are in the vaults that they never even trot out in the 2AM hour??? I'd much rather watch a bad "b" movie from 1936 on any night (but particularly Fri, Sat & Sun) than the Bad News Bears (I was a kid when it came out - it was crappy then and is crappy now). I wish they'd stop trying to educate us about what a classic is - I know what is classic. I'm 40 and virtually nothing made during my lifetime is a classic. Maybe when I'm 80 they can play Out of Africa and I'll oo and ah - but until then show the pre-1960's stuff. Pre-"me" stuff. And let us see the not-so-classic ones too - including the "other" Maltese Falcon - and at a decent hour. Maybe they should start a new station - Turner's OLD Movies. None of us are tuning in because they're "classics" - we're tuning in because they're old, and good, and we haven't seen them before.
lzcutter
Guys, You can join us over on the Return of the TCM Challenge thread where you can take the opportunity to schedule a week of TCM programming. The TCMProgrammer looked over all the schedules from the first challenge in March and is using some of the ideas for future programming. Here's your chance to have a say. JackBurley
Hey Liz, I am so humbled by the knowledge of everyone here and -- being fairly new to the board -- still feeling too intimidated by the task. But I hope to enter the next challenge (if y'all do one again). Thanks!
stryder989
Get a digital video recorder from your cable company. I pay 8 bucks a month for it. I check over the schedule and record all the good stuff on TCM and watch it when I want to. Doesn't matter what time TCM airs it. I always have a bank of classic movies saved to watch. Rewind the good scenes and the good lines. Once you get it you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
JackBurley
I'm terrified of DVRs. Though I've wanted TCM for years, I've only had it for about a month now. So TCM and I are still in the "honeymoon period". There have been days that I've watched four movies. If I had a DVR, I'm afraid I'd never leave the house! I'd spend every waking hour watching all the flicks that are shown between midnight and 6am. I have several friends who are addicted to their DVR. They're dangerous instruments. stryder989
Yep, there's no doubt a DVR will increase your TV watching. Here's a good article about it: http://www.centredaily.com/mld/kentucky/living/people/14110165.htm?source=rss&channel=kentucky_people
