rgm43msncom
Since TCM continues to show movies in letterbox format all the time and are not showing the same movie in the modified format as they once had promised, I want to know when they will start transmitting a high definition signal so I don't have to put up with seeing a letterbox format on my wide screen TV. It's seems they put the horse before the cart on this one.
jabbathespud
I too wish TCM had a high definition feed. Viewing a movie on HDnet Movies in full HD glory is truly something to be behold. TCM's vastly film library in HD would be any classic movie lover's dream come true. If you've viewed the restored Casablanca DVD, that can give you a taste of what it can be like. When a film is digitized in the DVD creation process, often that it done at a much higher resolution than is needed for a standard DVD (720x480). The digital master is then down converted to produce the standard DVD version and archived so that a high definition version can be created when desired. While I love watching TCM, it can be painful to watch a movie broadcast in letterbox format knowing that only about a quarter (or less!) of my TVs screen real estate is being used. Everything is either too small or (when zoomed) too fuzzy. Of all the non-premiun channels available, TCM is the first one I'd choose to go HD. In fact, I'd pay a bit extra a month to DirecTV just to get TCM HD. Finally, as an avid watcher of TCM, I can only hope that TCM HD will be coming to my DirecTV HD box someday soon.
