LawrenceA
Escape to Witch Mountain with Kim Richards Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles with Delphine Seyrig Katie Tippel with Monique van de Ven Salo with Paolo Bonicelli, Helene Surgere and Renato Moar Sheba, Baby with Pam Grier Escape from Witch Mountain is a silly Disney live-action movie about psychic kids. I watched it for Donald Pleasence and Ray Milland. It's not without its dubious charms, though. Sheba, Baby is more vintage Pam Grier, but something in the Coffy/Foxy Brown recipe is missing. It's still worth checking out for fans of Pam or blaxploitation films. Katie Tippel is another of Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's "naughty" films, the type he specialized in before coming to America and switching to ultra-violence. It's a nice looking period piece about a young woman who becomes a prostitute and her relationship with banker Rutger Hauer. It's well-acted and classy titillation. Jeanne Dielman is hard to recommend. I know it's a revered arthouse classic, but it's not an easy movie to watch/endure/experience. The audience watches the day-to-day life of a single mother as she goes about her chores and activities. There is very little dialogue and what is there is not really pertinent to the "story", just banal chit-chat for the most part. It's supposed to be an examination of the stifling nature of routine, or something. I don't want to give away any of the meager plot turns, and there is a payoff of sorts at the end, but the film is a slog, or was for me. Did I mention that it's 3 hours and 21 minutes long? Seyrig is good, though subtle, as emotional restriction is part of the issue at hand, I think. Salo is not as insane or shocking as its reputation once had it. It's sick, grotesque, and depraved, don't get me wrong, but cinematic outrageousness has come a long way in the ensuing 40 years. Much of the film is dialogue driven, with long, breathlessly spoken monologues detailing sexual escapades and other debauched activities. Pasolini does bring beauty to the film, via the music of Ennio Morrricone, the cinematography of Tonino Delli Colli, and the production design of Dante Ferretti. The acts of violence and torture that occur in the film have aged the worst, especially with the crystal clear print on the Criterion release, so some of the shock is lessened by the obviousness of the artificiality.

LawrenceA
Thanks, Lawrence. Do you happen to know if Katie Tippel, or Keetje Tippel ever been on TCM? DVD's seem to be out of print. I don't think so. I'm not sure if they would air it, as it's fairly explicit, although they seem to be loosening those boundaries on the channel more every year. I saw it originally on a poor DVD copy as part of a box set, and then watched it again via Netflix on a better-quality edition. That's probably the one out of print, though. Someone needs to re-release that old Verhoeven box set with Turkish Delight, Katie Tippel, Soldier of Orange, Spetters, and The Fourth Man.
kingrat
I recall Keetje Tippel as being a pretty good film. Soldier of Orange, too. I believe KT would be acceptable for TCM if shown at night, as they aired the Mark Cousins Story of Film clips with full frontal male nudity. Bogie56
Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 1976 … IMO Peter Finch, William Holden and Faye Dunaway are all leads in Network just as Oscar had it. Andrea Marcovicci is the lead actress in The Front. Lauren Bacall is the lead actress in The Shootist. Candy Clark is the lead actress in The Man Who Fell to Earth. Lee Remick is supporting in The Omen.

TomJH
Here are my choices of the 91 films I've seen from 1976 for… Best Supporting Actor of 1976 1. ZERO MOSTEL (Herschel 'Hecky Brown' Brownstein), The Front I'm glad to see you acknowledging Zero Mostel's terrific performance in this film, Bogie. For years I mistakenly believed The Front was Woody Allen's "greatest film," assuming that he had directed it, as well as starred. Well, whether directed by Martin Ritt or not, this "comedy" about the blacklist still hits a great emotional target for me. I'm not certain how many other victims of the Hollywood blacklist were associated with this film besides Mostel, who gives a funny and poignant performance (his last scene haunts me). As for Woody, while he can be accused of pretty much always playing himself, his casting here as a man who slowly realizes the horror and injustice of the blacklist is perfect. As an actor, I never thought he was more effective, even at his best in his own movies. And, lord, how I love his final line of dialogue in this film, blunt as it may be.

TomJH
1976 BEST ACTOR William Holden Network It seems to me that William Holden's performance in Network has always been a bit over shadowed by the impression made by Peter Finch and his legendary "mad as hell" scene. But it's a craggy faced Holden, his character facing middle age, hurting his wife in the process, who at times brilliantly articulates Paddy Chayefsky's searing dialogue about television and its corrosive impact upon society that is the crucial character in this film with whom the audience can identify. Still with great screen presence, though no longer those once golden boy good looks, Holden brings a common man quality to his role. The actor has us connect with his character's very human flaws as well as his sense of decency.
Bogie56
Best Performance by an extra: BOGIE56 (Howard Beale Show audience member), Network I believe that I have told this story at least once before. I was an extra in Network in the Howard Beale Show. It was shot at CFTO News Studios in Scarborough, Ontario. The chap that introduces Beale was the local CFTO newscaster. It was an interesting day. Not knowing anything about the film I didn't know what to make of Peter Finch's performance. It was fun to watch director, Sidney Lumet with Finch. it was 'darling' this and 'sweetheart' that. At the end of the day's shooting an elderly lady seated in front of me called out to Mr. Finch and he came over to talk to her. "Oh, Mr. Finch I just know that you are going to win an Academy Award for this film." Mr. Finch took her hand in his and said very gently, "Thank you, but you mustn't say things like that. It's bad luck." It struck me later as odd that they were both right. Yes, he did win the Academy Award but it was posthumously.

It looks like he'll never be nominated. --------Supporting Actress was not a well respected category this year. Straight's performance is best known as the shortest to win an award. Alexander's role may even be shorter. Foster's role is kind of short in retrospect. As for Laurie, in my view Carrie's virtues begin and end with Spacek, while Voyage of the Damned was at the time considered an all star prestige picture with little prestige. So I'm actually rather proud of my five nominees.
LawrenceA
Supporting Actor Robert Duvall (Taxi Driver) His role was so subtle, so unlike his usual look, that despite watching the film a multitude of times, I've never noticed Robert Duvall in Taxi Driver. Also, the lovely lady in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie was Azizi Johari, who I now know was Playboy's June 1975 Playmate of the Month.

I know Mosley from his long run on TV's Magnum PI, so it's interesting to see he had a noteworthy lead film role previously. It is a film that is very hard to find now which is unfortunate as it is pretty good. Once again, this is a film that played on our MoviePix Pay channel which was mainly devoted to films of the 60's and 70's. The channel is now defunct and it was something that I didn't record. There may be a copy on youtube ?? but the quality is horrendous. I just checked and there is a USED dvd copy on Amazon that is going for 195 pounds.
