Jlewis
Ugh. I hated THE DEER HUNTER almost as much as BRAVEHEART, but it did have some choice acting performances. 1978 was a year of good performances in flawed films.

TomJH
Here are my choices of the 83 films I've seen from 1978 for… Best Supporting Actor of 1978 5. GENE HACKMAN (Lex Luthor), Superman I loved Hackman's light touch as Lex Luthor. He was so deliciously contemptuous of everyone yet, in the midst of his dastardly plans, took a little boy glee in his own genius and evil. The actor who had been a perfect hard boiled Popeye Doyle was, for me, unexpectedly brilliant at playing comedy in this film. What a wonderful contrast he was to the sensitivity and sincerity of Christopher Reeve's caped super hero. Hackman also had some clever dialogue in Superman, which he delivered with relish (particularly when he had someone in a pickle - sorry). At one point he looked at his portly underling, wonderfully played by a hapless Ned Beatty, and said, ""Do you know why the number 200 is so vitally descriptive to both you and me? It's your weight and my I.Q.."
CoraSmith
A few months ago I said 1978-1985 is the period I like least. That's partly because these years are easy to overlook. You either watch classics from before this period or more recent films. TV reduces this period to a few blockbusters, the Oscar winners aren't as strong as before, and it isn't the strongest era for foreign films either. However I've been focusing on these "dark years", and they turn out not to be so dark after all. 1978 ACTOR: 1. Peter Ustinov - Death on the Nile 2. John Travolta - Grease 3. Jlewis
Here are Danny Peary’s Alternate Oscar choices for 1978. Winners in bold. Best Actor John Voight, Coming Home* Gary Busey, The Buddy Holly Story Dustin Hoffman, Straight Time Harvey Keitel, Fingers Tim McIntire, American Hot Wax Best Actress Jill Clayburgh, An Unmarried Woman* Jane Fonda, Coming Home Melanie Mayhron, Girlfriends As much as I love Danny Peary's writings in Cult Movies, I was a bit polarized by some of his choices in Alternate Oscar. Yet I agree that Coming Home was better than The Deer Hunter. By the same token, I also agree with many posters here that the performances in The Deer Hunter are quite good even if the film itself may be flawed and overlong. He probably should have added somebody from that movie in his runner-ups.
Bogie56
Best Actor: Richard Pryor –Blue Collar Paul Schrader's Blue Collar (1978) is a film well-worth looking out for. The performances of Yaphet Kotto, Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel are all very good. KilgoreTorut has singled out Richard Pryor and he made my top ten too. **some spoilers** As Zeke Brown, Pryor works on an auto assembly line in Detroit and can barely support his three kids. The IRS are after him too. Not happy with his treatment at work and moreso with his own union he teams with Kotto and Keitel to rob the union safe. At first Zeke is bent on disclosing his union's corruption with documents that they have stolen but when the noose tightens around his neck Zeke starts to think about number one. Blue Collar shows a side of Richard Pryor's talent rarely seen in other films.
