CoraSmith
Die Ehe der Maria Braun (The Marriage of Maria Braun) is my favorite German movie. It's the first part of a loose trilogy by R. W. Fassbinder about the problems of ordinary people during the reconstruction of West Germany in the 1950s. The story starts during World War II with a marriage and an explosion. Later it jumps to 1954. The men in Maria's life represent different ideologies: her German husband, an Afro-American soldier and a European businessman. There's a huge contrast between the ruins in post-war Germany and the luxurious interior of the businessman's house. Maria (Hanna Schygulla) uses her red lipstick to seduce and become a social climber in the new hierarchy. My favorite secondary character is Senkenberg (Hark Bohm), an accountant who isn't as emotionless as he seems. Fassbinder gave himself a supporting role as a black market salesman. The radio provides a historical background: a speech by Adenauer and a live report of West Germany's football world title in 1954. The Human Factor is an adaptation of a spy novel by Graham Greene. Greene, who had experience with international politics, wanted to write a story that gave a more realistic view on secret agents during the Cold War than the James Bond films. It's set during South Africa's Apartheid regime. The cast includes Richard Attenborough, John Gielgud, Derek Jacobi, Robert Morley and the Somali fashion model Iman. Sunburn is a shallow crime comedy, not to be taken too seriously. I just couldn't resist nominating two of my favorite TV stars of the era: Farrah Fawcett from Charlie's Angels and Joan Collins from Dynasty.

Jlewis
Actor: Bruno S. as Kasper Hauser in Jeder Für Sich Und Goit Gegen Allen (Every Man For Himself And God Against All / The Enigma Of Kasper Hauser) (1974)... German cinema was reverting back to the silent era when "they had faces then" Actress: Diane Keaton as Annie Hall (1977)... probably the archetypal independent American woman of the first feminist decade. The decision of wearing a tie may not have been hers, but it made a strong statement regarding gender roles. Actor playing an Actress... Frank Oz as Miss Piggy in The Muppet Movie (1979) "Supporting" Actor: Robert Shaw as Quint in Jaws (1975)... there was a lot nostalgia that decade for simpler times, but his retelling of sharks attacking Marines in 1945 was only simpler... not nostalgic. "Supporting" Actress: Dodo Denney as Mrs. TeeVee in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (1971)... there were so many blink-and-you-miss performances by the long forgotten. The image of her fainting after her son becomes a miniature is priceless. Best critter performances: the last feline in La Nuit Américaine (Day For Night) (1973) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-8rICtsNXI

kingrat
The 1970s, a decade in which women made great strides, was a decade in which the supporting actress category was exceptionally weak. Jlewis
Looks like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver is creaming the competition. Diane Keaton is doing well too. Doesn't look like much suspense for the final outcome.
Bogie56
Before we hit 1980 I would like to mention that I am going with 1980 for Atlantic City which was released in both France and Canada that year. It subsequently competed for the 1981 Oscars. I recall it being released in Canada where it was produced as Atlantic City, U.S.A. I have yet to see Fassbender’s Berlin Alexanderplatz. It was conceived as and released in 1980 as a television mini-series in Germany. It had a theatrical release in the U.S. in 1983. The imdb also points out that it played the Venice Film Festival in 1980. So, i would classify this as a 1980 film.

Bogie56
Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 1980 … Oscar put Peter O’Toole in the lead category for The Stunt Man in 1980. IMO O’Toole’s part was supporting. Steve Railsbeck was the lead. No doubt O’Toole ended up in the lead category due to the star factor and billing. These days they would have no problem putting him in supporting to increase his Oscar chances. Conversely I think Timothy Hutton belongs in the lead actor category for Ordinary People. He really is the star of the film and it is his story. I also have Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore as leads in that film. IMO Cathy Moriarty is the lead actress in Raging Bull. Oscar had her in the supporting category. But Skimpole gave a good argument why Moriarty is supporting in the Lead or Supporting thread. I have Jack Thompson and Edward Woodward as the leads in Breaker Morant. Bryan Brown is supporting. Tommy Lee Jones is the lead actor in Coal Miner’s Daughter. Debra Winger is the lead actress in Urban Cowboy. Gerard Depardieu and Nicole Garcia are leads in Mon Oncle d’Amerique. Marie-Christine Barrault is the lead actress in Stardust Memories. Jlewis
1980 Harrison Ford Raiders of the Lost Ark I am guessing you meant to say The Empire Strikes Back although Raiders was filmed in 1980. I am surprised that film isn't getting any attention yet, probably because it was more about the special effects than the acting.
