Bogie56
When I wrote the post to which you responded, I was thinking of Terms of Endearment as another one of those sorts of movies that don't appeal to me. Sort of American Neo-Realism creeping in, which led, in my opinion, to some of the soap-operaish films about "real people" that came later. Yes, I would agree with this view of this type of film. They are not films that i am overly enthusiastic about. Yet when I see them again I am surprised by how well crafted they are and impressed all over again by the acting. It is easy to be engaged with them. If anyone has experienced that ending in Terms of Endearment you might agree that Shirley MacLaine's performance is so spot on it gives you chills.

skimpole
The 2016 choices are months away, and I haven't seen most of the nominees as of yet. But I will say that while the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor is good, there is one clearly better choice that wasn't even nominated. Bogie56
Best Actor of 1980 and ... MARIUS WEYERS (Andrew Steyn), The Gods Must Be Crazy Appreciation of comedy can be quite personal. Slapstick comedy even more so. Far down on my list of runner ups for leading actor performance was Marius Weyers (1945- ) in The Gods Must Be Crazy. Weyers plays a biologist who examines manure samples. His propensity for being a clumsy twit hits the heights when he is around the opposite sex. It is a bold, physical, silly performance and I take my hat off to Weyers for going for it. He is still working non-stop in South Africa.

kingrat
Greg Ferrara had an excellent recent column on Hopscotch in what used to be the Morlocks. He likes the movie better than I do, but it will never have a better case made for it. I recommend Mon oncle d'Amerique. The other handful of Resnais films I've seen, the obvious suspects, I admire but don't really love. I didn't care for La guerre est finie. But Mon oncle d'Amerique I thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to seeing again. This isn't so neck-up as most of Resnais' other films. He even uses a plot device worthy of a Warner Brothers women's melodrama. I was always intrigued to see how the lives of the three characters would intersect. This would actually be an excellent first film for those who have never seen any of Resnais' work.

Caddyshack with Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight and Sarah Holcomb Dressed to Kill with Michael Caine, Angie Dickinson and Nancy Allen Fade to Black with Dennis Christopher Flash Gordon with Max von Sydow, Brian Blessed and Ornella Muti Friday the 13th with Betsy Palmer Honeysuckle Rose with Dyan Canon and Amy irving The Jazz Singer with Neil Diamond and Luci Arnaz Motel Hell with Nancy Parsons My Bodyguard with Chris Makepeace The Ninth Configuration with Scott Wilson I've seen these. Caddyshack is my favorite of the bunch, although comedy is relative, and I don't know how much enjoyment a first time viewing would be now. Flash Gordon is another love it or hate it affair. I love the camp approach, and the costumes and sets are fun. The Queen soundtrack is appropriate, too. Friday the 13th is a more traditional murder mystery type affair the first go around, before it descended into the Jason-picks-a-weapon murder series it became.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Flash Gordon (1980) which I have recorded. Brian Blessed has been on a few talk shows in England and is very good natured about the stick he receives from fans in the street about his Prince Vultan and "Gordon's Alive!" And doesn't Max have a campy line about Earth like "destroy the planet"?
Bogie56
I haven't seen Bad Timing City of Women Heart Beat Hopscotch The Hounds of Notre Dame It Can't Be Winter, We Haven't Had Summer Yet Klondike Fever La Cage Aux Folles II Leap Into the Void Les Bons Debarras The Mirror Crack'd Mr. Patman Mon Oncle D'Amerique Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears Nijinsky Oblomov 5 of these are Canadian films. I believe I mentioned 4 of them. Klondike Fever which I didn't care for garnered Gordon Pinsent a Genie Award. I'm sure his longstanding popularity contributed to that. Hounds of Notre Dame (1980) by Zale Dalen is one of my favourite Canadian films. It isn't on dvd and sadly another one of those impossible to find titles from the 80's. Thomas Peacocke takes a page out of Pat O'Brien's playbook with his Father Athol Murray a Priest who teaches at a Catholic school in rural Saskatchewan. He smokes, drinks and extols a tough fighting spirit especially when it comes to his hockey team, the Hounds. Mr. Patman (1980) or Crossover as it was retitled will be of particular interest to you Lawrence as it stars James Coburn. It was filmed in Vancouver and directed by John Guillermin. It isn't a great film by any means but Coburn plays a male nurse who has a parade of women. Kate Nelligan and especially Fionnula Flanagan are standouts. I couldn't find a photo of Fionnula Flanagan (above) from Mr. Patman though you may have success finding the film itself if you search out vhs'. Flanagan was a leading actress of the Irish stage when Guillermin cast her in Patman. Prior to 1980 most of Kate Nelligan's work was on the stage as well.
LawrenceA
Before we leave 1980, I thought it might be appropriate given the news of her passing to mention Mary Tyler Moore's turn in Ordinary People. She was my choice for Best Actress. One of the things I look for in performances when it's an actor or actress who is very well known is how much outside of their usual range does this role reach. In MTM's case, it couldn't be further from her charming, sunny TV persona. I did a write-up about MTM's role in Ordinary People a few months ago in another thread where I probably expressed myself better. But I think she did a tremendous job of portraying someone dealing with emotions and situations that she is not prepared for, not with histrionics but by becoming colder and more inaccessible to those around her, a situation that I find more in line with reality as I've lived it. Her character is easy to hate through most of the film, but by the end you glimpse a tiny piece of the humanity within her, even if you can't exactly warm to her. It was a brave performance for a beloved screen presence like MTM to take on, with the possibility of alienating her traditional fans, but to me it proved that she was a truly gifted actress.
Bogie56
Before we hit 1981 I would like to mention that I am going with 1981 for Krzystztof Kiewlowski’s Blind Chance. It was completed in 1981 but banned by the Polish government and not released until 1987. The imdb and wikipedia go by its 1987 release date but when a film’s release is delayed by many years because of a political ban I prefer to use its completion date for the purposes of comparison with other films.
