Here are the films from 1984 that were mentioned that I have not seen as yet.

Body Double with Melanie Griffith and Craig Wasson

C.H.U.D. with Daniel Stern

Firestarter with Drew Barrymore

Gremlins with Phoebe Cates and Hoyt Axton

The Hotel New Hampshire with Jodie Foster, Paul McCrane and Nastassja Kinski

Irreconcilable Differences with Shelley Long and Drew Barrymore

The Lonely Guy with Steve Martin

Maria’s Lovers with Nastassja Kinski

Micki & Maude with Dudley Moore

Night of the Comet with Kelli Maroney and Mary Waronov

A Nightmare on Elm Street with Robert Englund, Johnny Depp and Heather Lagenkamp

Protocol with Goldie Hawn

Red Dawn with Patrick Swayze, Lea thompson and Jennifer Grey

Sixteen Candles with Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Michael Schoeffling, Gedda Watanabe and John Cusack

Songwriter with Lesley Ann Warren

Teachers with Richard Mulligan

The Woman In Red with Gene Wilder and Kelly LeBrock

I've seen quite a few that you haven't this year, Bogie. I'll just briefly comment on a few.

Teachers is only an average movie, as I recall, but Richard Mulligan's turn as a substitute teacher who really gets into teaching is humorous, as is the pay-off for his character at the end.

Blu-ray-Review-High-Def-Digest-Teachers-

Firestarter has some really good moments and a lot of really bad ones, but I find it a guilty pleasure. Drew Barrymore, at the height of her childhood fame in '84, plays a girl with powerful psychic abilities that government bad guys want to exploit. George C. Scott's supporting turn as a Native American killer and all-around creep is a joy, too.

Burn-It-Down-Firestarter-01.jpg

A Nightmare On Elm Street has some genuinely creepy moments, although the series quickly degenerated into near-camp with the villainous Freddy Krueger spouting corny one-liners. In this first film, director Wes Craven uses Freddy sparingly, and often in shadow, and less is more in this case. Langenkamp also makes for one of the better "Final Girls" of the 80's slasher movie boom.

Red Dawn is a perfect snapshot of right-wing '80's paranoia and jingoism. I would put it in a time capsule as a reminder of how things were perceived to be by some corners at the time. The plot involves the U.S. being invaded by every Communist country, although our heroes, mainly a group of teenagers from the nearby high school, face off against Cubans and Russians. It's simple-minded, it fetishizes guns in that singular 1980's action movie way, and it does feature a decent cast of young actors and actresses, such as Grey, Thompson, Swayze, Charlie Sheen and C. Thomas Howell, along with veteran performers like Ben Johnson, Harry Dean Stanton, Ron O'Neal and William Smith. If asked to name 5 movies that perfectly capture the 1980's, Red Dawn would be one of them, even if it's silly as hell.

ef4560552a7bd5dc713a2047662ca0e7.jpg

Speaking of silly, but in a good way, Night of the Comet posits the frequent 1980's scenario of an apocalyptic world and how the few survivors will continue after civilization has gone. After Halley's Comet passes by Earth, everyone who was outside at the time is vaporized, and those with minor exposure slowly get sick and turn into homicidal zombies. Only those who were lucky enough to be sealed away at the time of the comet's passing are left unharmed. Two such survivors are sisters, one a tough, smart girl (Catherine Mary Stewart), the other a bubble-headed cheerleader and valley girl (Kelli Maroney). They struggle to survive run-ins with the infected, but naturally take time to go (free) shopping in the malls. The cast also includes Robert Beltran, Mary Woronov, and Geoffrey Lewis. This is a fun movie, and enjoyable if not taken too seriously.

Heimat, German for "Home" or "Homeland", is a huge series about the history of a German family. The first series (1984) has eleven episodes and lasts over fifteen hours; yet imdb calls it a mini-series. The five series combined have 32 episodes and last over fifty hours. I've seen most episodes of the first series. It's an impressive account of German history from 1919 to 1982, seen through the eyes of an ordinary family. Big historical events are intertwined with personal stories of love, conflicts, careers and death. Unusual is that it alternates black-and-white with colour. The main character of the first episode is called Paul Simon, but he emigrates to the United States. His wife Maria stays in Germany until her death in 1982, leaving many children and grandchildren, all with a life story of their own. It's worth watching if you have the time for it.

heimat-girl-table-006255b1255d2.jpg

Body Double is probably the most complex film by Brian De Palma. It's about a man in an apartment who becomes a voyeur, undoubtedly inspired by Rear Window. It has long, dreamlike sequences. I would have to rewatch it to understand the plot.

592-3.jpg

The Woman in Red is a remake of the French comedy Pardon mon affaire. Gene Wilder plays a married man who becomes obsessed with a model (Kelly LeBrock). I found this very funny when I saw it many years ago on TV, but a more recent rewatch was a bit disappointing. It has a boring middle part and the humor can be quite silly. However Gene Wilder and the climax in the hotel are still fun. And it features Speedracer's favorite song I Just Called to Say I Love You!

Here are the 1984 films that I have not seen...

Another Country

The Bay Boy

Champions

Choose Me

Comfort and Joy

The Ebony Tower

The Funeral

L'Amour a Mort

Le Crime d'Ovide Plouffe

The Man From Majorca

A Private Function

Secret Honor

A Sunday In the Country

Swann In Love

What Have I Done to Deserve This?

318310_full.jpgAlan Scarfe won a supporting Genie award for the Canadian film The Bay Boy.  Though it did not make any of my performers' lists it is interesting to see for Liv Ulmann and young, Kiefer Sutherland in just his second film.

comfortandjoy.jpg

Comfort and Joy is a wonderful little comedy by Bill Forsyth which concerns a deep rivalry between two Italian families who run Ice Cream vans in Glasgow.  Bill Paterson made my runner up lead actor list.

ils-connaissent-la-chanson,M21764.jpg

Sabine Azema, seen above with Pierre Arditi was near the top of my best actress list for L'amour a Mort by Alain Resnais.  As you may imagine, this Resnais film like many of his others is not easily described.  It deals with the big issues of love, death and memory.

531652.jpg

Le Crime d'Ovide Plouffe is the more serious sequel to Les Plouffe (1981) which I was a big fan of.  It is essentially a crime film with the same characters.  Gabriel Arcand won Canada's Genie award for his performance.  Supporting actress, Anne Letourneau made my list.  At least this one is available on dvd with English subtitles.

alain-delon.jpg?w=300&h=183

Alain Delon made my supporting runner up list for Swann In Love.  He is the overtly gay friend of Jeremy Irons who has fallen in love with a woman below his status.  It is an interesting film as Irons plays another character who is not entirely likeable.  He does his own French dialogue too.

Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 1985 …

IMO Eric Roberts and Jon Voight are both leads in Runaway Train.  Oscar put Roberts in the supporting category possibly to increase his chances of winning but this is obviously a two-hander, buddy film.

Eric Stoltz is the male lead in Mask.

Jane Fonda and Anne Bancroft are co leads in Agnes of God.

William Petersen is the sole lead in To Live and Die In L.A.

Danny Glover is the lead actor in The Color Purple.

Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham are both leads in St. Elmo’s Fire.

-------After no foreign language nominees last year, now we have 12.

-------There are three years which have two movies on my all time top ten.  1985 is the third and least impressive of these three years.

-------Clement and Hampton's presence is odd, since they don't actually star in the movie:  they star in a short movie called "The Book of Mary" that is always shown with the movie.

Was that the French exchange student? I liked her, too, even if her accent was dodgy.

I almost nominated Demian Slade in the Best Juvenile category.

"I want my two dollars!"

better-of-dead-photo.jpg

It certainly is. She was quite a knockout. I also enjoy Mr. Slade and Dan Schneider who played the son of the woman who acted as the host mother for Monique (Franklin). I really hope this movie continues to grow in popularity because its really one of the gems of the 80's.

IMDB gives it a February 1986 premiere in both America and Britain.

Thanks.  I'm sure I'm going to have a few more mistakes as my lists started quite some time ago when this information was not available.  Ephram Katz used to be a good source 20 years ago but there was never any specific release date information.
