LawrenceA
Here are the films from 1985 that were mentioned that I have not seen as yet. Better Off Dead with John Cusack, Curtis Armstrong and Diane Franklin Cat’s Eye with James Woods Clue with Madeleine Kahn, Tim Curry, Martin Mull, Christopehr Lloyd and Eileen Brennan Crossover Dreams with Ruben Blades Explorers with River Phoenix Fletch with Chevy Chase, Joe Don Baker and Tim Matheson The Goonies with Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Anne Ramsay, Sean Astin and Jeff Cohen Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf with Sybil Danning Maxie with Glenn Close Plenty with John Gielgud and Tracey Ullman The Quiet Earth with Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Peter Smith Real Genius with Val Kilmer an Michelle Meyrink Secret Admirer with Lori Laughlin Subway with Christopher Lambert Weird Science with Bill Paxton Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf is really a terrible movie. But it is just weird enough to warrant one viewing. Christopher Lee stars as a werewolf hunter who tracks down a gathering of werewolves and their queen, Stirba, played by Sybil Danning. She gets to act regal, wear outrageous costumes, and then take them off repeatedly. One such instance is shown during the closing credits multiple times. There were three teen-appeal science fiction comedies released in 1985: My Science Project, Real Genius and Weird Science. In Weird Science, Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith star as a pair of nerdy high school kids who can't get dates. One bored, lonely night, they create their ideal perfect woman on a computer, and a bolt of lightning strikes the house, magically causing the woman to come to life in the form of Kelly LeBrock. Bill Paxton has a small role as Mitchell-Smith's older brother Chet, a bully and all-out lout who eventually gets his just desserts in a unique way in cinema history. It was the first major role that Paxton got noticed for. Real Genius is about students at a science and technology college. Gabe Jarret stars as the new kid on campus who gets taken under the wing of Val Kilmer, who is the school's resident bad boy and trouble maker. Kilmer is very charismatic and charming in the role. Michelle Meyrink plays another student who is the love interest for Jarret. She may be one of the early examples of the "a-dork-able" trend of socially awkward, quirky girls who are still likable and attractive. Cat's Eye is an anthology film based on the works of Stephen King. In the first story, "Quitters, Inc", James Woods stars as a chain-smoker who decides to go to the new title organization to try their stop-smoking methods. He soon learns that the penalties for "falling off the wagon", so to speak, can be dire. Anyone who was ever a smoker or knew one can relate to this short. Explorers is another youth-appeal sci-fi comedy, but this time the stars are younger. Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix both made their film debuts and star, along with Jason Presson as a trio of kids who, via plans received in their dreams, build a working rocket to space. It's goofy, but fun, like many of director Joe Dante's films. Finally, Fletch stars Chevy Chase as a newspaper columnist who stumbles upon a murder for hire plot that takes twists and turns and involves the drug trade, police corruption and polygamy. While this may sound like standard mystery fare, it is handled well and develops naturally. Chase was never used better in a film, in my opinion, as this captures him at his best. This was based on a Gregory Mcdonald novel, the first in a series. There was one more (inferior) sequel made, and every few years there are rumors of a reboot to the series, but I can't imagine it without Chase.
Bogie56
Here are the 1985 movies that I haven't seen: Angry Harvest Colonel Redl Dance with a Stranger Insignifigance Joshua Then and Now The Journey of Natty Gann Letter to Brezhnev The Lightship***** Lost in America Men... My American Cousin My Beautiful Laundrette The Official Story The Shooting Party Silas Marner Tampopo Three Men and a Cradle Turtle Diary A Zed and Two Naughts I've seen the films listed above. Warning that my bit on Joshua Then and Now will contain a **Spoiler**. Insignificance is a really good little film by Nicolas Roeg. It all takes place in a hotel room and though the characters are not named they are quite obviously, Albert Einstein, Joe McCarthy, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. Tony Curtis as McCarthy and Gary Busey as DiMaggio made my performers lists but Theresa Russell and Michael Emil are quite good too. I just watched an Alan Arkin interview on youtube which was primarily about his Oscar nomination for Little Miss Sunshine (2006). He mentioned the similarity of that character to the one he played in Mordecai Richler's Joshua Then and Now in that they are men who know nothing but like to offer a lot of advice. Sounds like they could run for President! Arkin was my choice for Supporting actor of the year. He has one of the great film exits of all time. After saying goodbye to his son (James Woods) beside an idling car he unexpectedly opens the trunk and gets in and the car departs. It rather says it all about his shady character. Silas Marner is now listed as a TVM on the imdb but I recall that it was released theatrically as well. Ben Kingsley is wonderful as the hermit who discovers an orphaned baby girl on his doorstep. The girl grows up to be Jenny Agutter. it is a touching film with a fairy tale quality. Turtle Diary is a small British film with Ben Kingsley and Glenda Jackson as two lonely souls who come together over a common cause which is to steal a sea turtle from a London zoo and then to drive to the coast and release it. It is a caper that requires some planning and daring. it is a pretty silly premise but worth seeing for Glenda Jackson.

skimpole
My best actress this year was Norma Aleandro in The Official Story. The movie won the oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, while Aleandro won the Best Actress prize at Cannes. The movie is about a teacher, in her forties, living under the military dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, She has adapted a baby, now a charming four year old and becomes curious whether the daughter was actually stolen from a murdered political prisoner, since such murders, and such thefts were quite common under the regime. Aleandro herself spent the dictatorship in exile in Spain. Her performance, notwithstanding the subject matter, is a reserved subtle one.
Swithin
I nominated Myrem Roussel for best actress in Hail Mary. Here is more on the movie from Studies in Cinema blogspot: When Jean-Luc Godard's 1985 film Hail Mary (Je vous salue, Marie) was initially released, it set off a firestorm of protest. I remember when Hail Mary played at the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, before it went it to general release. Busloads of Catholics were down on their knees, with rosaries, protesting in front of Alice Tully Hall, where it played twice one day. I remember a guy I knew coming out of the theater, after seeing the film. He walked through the protesters saying, "O Mary, it's a great film." Swithin
1986 Favorites I'm afraid I couldn't find enough 1986 favorites to make a list. I did like a few films and performances -- Hannah and her Sisters; Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources; Mona Lisa; The Mission; but in general I either didn't see enough films or didn't like what I saw very much. Regarding Blue Velvet, I find David Lynch to be like Quentin Tarantino in my book: directors who try hard but don't succeed in impressing me. So let me just pay homage to a little 1986 film that I found quite moving, in an odd way, and to a touching performance by Sharon Baird (billed as S.L. Baird) as Ratboy. LawrenceA
-------Why is it so hard to type Ms. Skye's first name? I don't know, either. I ran into the same problem a while ago while trying to talk about her. I looked it up on Urban Dictionary to see if her name has become some kind of slang, and there are two definitions meaning "a terrible small town", but I'm not sure why that is censorable.
