LawrenceA
Here are the films from 1986 that were mentioned that I have not seen as yet. Absolute Beginners with Eddie O’Connell, Patsy Kensit, James Fox and David Bowie A Better Tomorrow with Chow Yun-fat Betty Blue with Beatrice Dalle 8 Million Ways to Die with Andy Garcia Extremities with Farrah Fawcett Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer with Michael Rooker, Tracy Arnold and Tom Towles Jumpin’ Jack Flash with Whoopi Goldberg Legal Eagles with Darryl Hannah ‘Night Mother with Anne Bancroft The Night of the Creeps with Tom Atkins Poltergeist II The Other Side with Juian Beck River’s Edge with Dennis Hopper and **** Skye Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 with Bill Mosely Three Amigos! with Chevy Chase Tough Guys with Kirk Douglas Wise Guys with Lou Albano and Dan Hedaya I've seen these. I've already talked about a few. I'll add that I also liked Jumpin' Jack Flash, Legal Eagles, 'Night Mother and Tough Guys, and have no trouble recommending them. And Three Amigos! is a must see, although Siskel & Ebert notoriously hated it. Poltergeist II: The Other Side isn't nearly as good as the first film, but it does have its merits. Appearances from Geraldine Fitzgerald and Will Sampson help, as does one very memorable scene with Craig T. Nelson vomiting up a tequila worm that turns into a guy. Really!!! I nominated Julian Beck for Supporting Actor, and he's very creepy in the movie. He plays a weird preacher that may have some ties to the spirits haunting the family from the first movie. Beck, who was a real one-of-a-kind in real life (he worked primarily in avant-garde theater in NY), was dying of stomach cancer when he made the film, and had in fact died 9 months before the film's release. River's Edge is a true-crime story about a teenager who kills his girlfriend and leaves her body in the title location. Word spreads among his high school buddies, and yet no one contacts the police or any authority figures, instead coming out to look at the body while drinking or getting high. It was meant as an illustration of moral decay among the day's youth. Keanu Reeves stars, with Daniel Roebuck as the killer, and Crispin Glover giving a really unhinged performance. Dennis Hopper plays a seedy fringe character that some of the kids buy drugs from. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a tough film to watch, let alone like. Based on the supposed crimes of real life killer Henry Lee Lucas and his sometime associate Otis Toole, the main draw for the film is the performances. Michael Rooker does a very convincing job in the title role, a truly evil, repellent murderer who will strike for any reason. Tom Towles is also very good as the Toole stand-in, as is Tracy Arnold as a girl unfortunate enough to end up in their orbit. The movie isn't as gory as any of the Saw or Hostel movies, and there are no jump-scares or cheap thrills. It's just an ugly and unflinching look at the worst in society. Betty Blue aka 37 2 le matin is a French film starring Jean-Hugues Anglade and Beatrice Dalle, who I nominated. It's a very stylish movie, very glossy in that particular 80's way. The first half seems like a well-made, if somewhat standard, romance between the outlandish carefree spirit Betty (Dalle) and the more sedate, conservative Zorg (Anglade). Things take a turn in the second half, though, as Zorg (and the audience) learn that Betty's wild-child antics are a symptom of real mental illness, one that's spiraling more and more out of control. It can be tough going, but I thought Dalle was very good in the film, as was Anglade. Night of the Creeps is a fun science fiction/horror comedy about a bunch of alien slugs that infest people on a college campus and turn them into zombies. Jason Lively stars as the new kid whose awkward attempts at socialization are made worse by the undead. There are some good sight gags, and you'll notice a thing or two that Peter Jackson lifted for his later horror-comedy classic Dead-Alive/Braindead. Tom Atkins got a nomination from me for his role as the hard-boiled police detective working the case. He plays it as a near parody of the tough-talking, hard-drinking noir cop, and he steals the movie.
Bogie56
Here are the 1986 movies that I haven't seen: Castaway Clockwise Dancing In the Dark Desert Bloom Ginger and Fred I Hate Actors Jean de Florette Lady Jane Manon of the Spring Melo The Sacrifice Sweet Liberty Wolf at the Door I've seen those above from your list, Lawrence. Without a doubt I would highly recommend seeing Claude Berri's Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon of the Spring. They were number 3 and 4 respectively on my top ten films of 1986 list. You might be able to get a bluray which has both films. I won't give too much away but basically it is about rival farmers plotting to steal land. The performances by Gerard Depardieu in the first and Emmanuelle Beart in the sequel are very good. But Daniel Auteuil and Yves Montand as the villains tend to steal the show. Castaway by Nicolas Roeg stars Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe who both made my lists. It is based on a true story of a man who decides to live on a desert island for a year and advertises for a female to accompany him. You may recall this from the real life pair who appeared on many daytime talk shows to tell their story. The character Reed plays seems as if it was written for him. It is not a great film but the performances are top notch and Donohoe is half naked for most of the film. Alan Alda directed and stars in Sweet Liberty which is about a film crew descending on a small American town. It's quite fun and has an all-star cast. Lillian Gish made my supporting actress list. Wolf at the Door or Oviri which it seems to go by now features Donald Sutherland as Paul Gaughin. Sutherland is very good in it as you might expect.
CoraSmith
Fellini made his best work before 1970, but I do like one of his later films: Ginger and Fred (Ginger e Fred). Marcello Mastroianni and Fellini's wife Giulietta Masina play two aging entertainers who used to be popular with their Astaire & Rogers impersonation act, but that was decades ago. Now a TV producer wants to organize a reunion. The question is whether they still have it. It's a gentle story with humor and the nostalgia of bygone glory. Clockwise is one of John Cleese's best comedies apart from his TV and Python work. The idea is simple: he has to be somewhere to give a lecture, but a succession of transport problems and bad luck makes it hard for him to arrive in time. It's borderline silly, but Cleese's outbursts of frustration and the different situations he finds himself in make it a fun watch. Tough Guys is an action comedy with old cronies Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. They play two former train robbers who have just been released after thirty years in prison. The question is how long they will stay on the right track.

Bogie56
Before we hit 1987 I would like to mention that I am going with 1987 for Pelle the Conqueror. Pelle competed for the 1988 Oscars but was released in Sweden and Denmark in December 1997 and won awards in Sweden that year. I am also going with 1987 for Little Dorrit which also competed in the 1988 Oscars. It was released in the UK in December 1987 Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 1987 … IMO Faye Dunaway is the lead actress in Barfly. Richard Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito are co-leads in Tin Men. Albert Brooks is supporting in Broadcast News. Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon are all leads in The Witches of Eastwick. Alfred Molina is a co-lead in Prick Up Your Ears.
