ACTOR:  Daniel Day-Lewis  There Will Be Blood (2007)

ACTRESS:  Naomi Watts  Mulholland Dr  (2001)

SUPPORTING ACTOR:  Heath Ledger  The Dark Knight  (2008)

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  Michelle Williams  Brokeback Mountain  (2005)

JUVENILE:  Freddie Highmore  Finding Neverland  (2004)

Although I'm a fan of all of these, none are among my all-time favorites, with the possible exception of Day-Lewis. In fact, for either the Supporting Actress or Juvenile categories, my choices could be different if you asked me tomorrow. Supporting Actor is usually my favorite category for performances, but this decade was a bit weaker than the previous few, to my mind.

Here's an extended review of The Princess and the Frog which both Bogie and Lawrence indicated they had not seen yet.

It may be the Disney fan inside of me, but I found many reasons to love The Princess and the Frog. Released at a time when 2D animation was trying to make a comeback at Disney, this movie was a sharp contrast to previous efforts such as Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons. Disney planned to make this movie their comeback into the world of hand-drawn cartoons. The story is a loose adaptation of The Frog Prince by The Brothers Grimm, set in New Orleans during the 1920's.

The main character Tiana (Anika Nani Rose) is a young waitress trying to save up enough money to open her own restaurant. When a foreign prince named Naveen (Bruno Campos) comes into town, all the girls except Tiana go nuts. She’s not the kind who goes looking for love, which makes her much more comparable to Belle, as opposed to Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Naveen comes to America in an effort to find more money after his parents cut off his funds due to his lavish playboy lifestyle. He ends up meeting a man named Dr. Facilier (voiced most wickedly by the talented Keith David), a witch doctor with evil intentions. Facilier tricks Naveen into wishing that he could get some more “green” during a catchy number called “Friends on the Other Side”. The only problem is that the “green” Dr. Facilier was referring to is the green skin of a frog which becomes Naveen’s new form. Eventually, Naveen makes his way to the mansion where a party is being held to ring in Mardi Gras. Naveen gets a rather hesitant Tiana to kiss him in order to return him to his princely state. This plan backfires though, as Tiana also becomes a slimy, green amphibian. Thus the race is on to break the spell and stop Dr. Facilier from taking over New Orleans through his voodoo magic.

Overall, the movie is fairly well presented. The use of hand-drawn animation is nice, with some stellar work from some of Disney’s brightest artistic legends and some newcomers. The voice talent is once again stellar with Rose providing a dreamy yet hardworking sensibility to the character of Tiana. Keith David is slowly becoming a more noticeable presence in film and television which is nice to see. He just has a very smooth and seductive voice, yet his Dr. Facilier can also be quite menacing in his quest to accomplish his plans. I also love the vocal work on the character of Tiana’s best friend Lottie (voiced by Broadway actress Jennifer Cody). She is always full of energy and the character works great off of the more reserved Tiana.

The music for the most part is also decent, particularly Friends on the Other Side. It feels as though songwriter Randy Newman had written two mediocre songs and decided to put them together at the last minute in order to create one great song. The song is very much written in the tradition of earlier villain songs such as Poor Unfortunate Souls and Be Prepared and it is both spooky and fun at the same time. Tiana’s song Almost There is also nice to listen to, and although it takes a lot from other so-called “I Want” songs from previous Disney princess movies, it also feels that Tiana is determined to look for more in her life that you couldn’t get by wishing or asking a fairy godmother. The rest of the instrumental score blends traditional Disney melodies with the sounds of New Orleans jazz and Dixieland rhythms.

The plot is quite complex with many connected plots that might be a bit confusing compared to previous efforts. But for the most part, there is still a strong connection between the two main characters as they learn to deal with each other’s faults. Some of the minor characters aren’t as memorable as Tiana or Dr. Facilier, but they aren’t the main focus. Despite the complexities of the plot, the movie is fairly enjoyable. Some people may also remember that the movie caused a minor controversy when they announced they were introducing the first African-American princess, but this did not distract in any way from my enjoyment of the film. It showed that Disney was learning from the mistakes of the past in an effort to return to the glory of their heyday as an animation studio.

The Princess and the Frog truly did mark a turning point for the Disney company, as it started a run of successful animated films such as Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, and Moana. I enjoyed it and I hope that more people watch it and discover this true gem in the Disney canon. Also features the voice talents Jim Cummings, Jenifer Lewis, Michael-Leon Wooley, John Goodman, Peter Bartlett, Terrence Howard, and Oprah Winfrey who also worked on the film as a technical consultant.

I'll do a recap of the best of the decade choices before starting 2010 tomorrow.  If anyone else would like to post their best of the decade choices in the 5 categories please feel free to do so.

Before we hit 2010 I would like to mention that I am going with that year for Beginners.  Christopher Plummer won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2011 for Beginners but it was originally released at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010.

Leading vs. Supporting Categories in 2010 …

IMO Christian Bale was the co-leading actor in The Fighter.  I came to this conclusion right after seeing it well before all the awards came out with Bale in supporting.  It certainly did the trick in the case of Oscar as he went on to win it.  But I thought the film just as much his story as that of the brother.

I have Hailee Steinfeld as the lead actress in True Grit.   The film is clearly her story.  Oscar had her in the supporting category as they so often do in the case of juvenile performers.  Jeff Bridges is the male lead.

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are both leads in Blue Valentine.

Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are co-leads in The Kids Are All Right.  Mark Ruffalo is supporting.

Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter are supporting in The King’s Speech.

Olivia Williams is supporting n The Ghost.
