GregoryPeckfan
May I say Kudos for TCM having a saving option as when I tried to add JUVENILE in my sentence about "Best Award" I accidently deleted everything. I noticed I had Ginger Rogers down as GINGINGER Rogers. Oh, well....... I edited it.
speedracer5
I hope my 1937 post didn't get lost after all the subsequent tom foolery. I promise to comply with the rules next week. I'd give my Juvenile Award to Judy Garland for Broadway Melody of 1938.
GregoryPeckfan
Sorry Bogie, I'm going rogue and posting my 1937 now. I got the threads mixed up and compiled my list in the wrong thread. Winners in BOLD BEST PICTURE Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (mostly because of the Wicked Queen and Dopey. Snow White is probably my least favorite Princess. Prince Florian ranks low on the hot Disney prince meter for me too). Topper Stella Dallas The Awful Truth Double Wedding Green Light Black Legion Nothing Sacred Stage Door I picked 'Snow White' as best picture, not because it's my absolute favorite from this year, but because it was the most innovative picture made that year. BEST ACTOR William Powell, Double Wedding Humphrey Bogart, Black Legion Cary Grant, The Awful Truth Cary Grant, Topper Roland Young, Topper BEST ACTRESS Irene Dunne, The Awful Truth Barbara Stanwyck, Stella Dallas Katharine Hepburn, Stage Door Carole Lombard, Nothing Sacred Constance Bennett, Topper BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Asta, The Awful Truth Ralph Bellamy, The Awful Truth Humphrey Bogart, Kid Galahad Walter Connelly, Nothing Sacred Errol Flynn, The Prince and the Pauper BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Anne Shirley, Stella Dallas Andrea Leeds, Stage Door Lucille Ball, Stage Door Ann Sheridan, Black Legion Judy Garland, Broadway Melody of 1938 BEST CASTING Errol Flynn in the title role in The Perfect Specimen BEST TRIBUTE 13-year old Judy Garland singing "You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do it)" to a photo of Clark Gable in Broadway Melody of 1938. BEST ENSEMBLE The ladies in Stage Door (Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Andrea Leeds, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller, Constance Collier, Eve Arden) BEST LIAR Ann Miller. At 14, she produced a fake birth certificate to appear in this film. It's very impressive that she can hold her own dancing alongside Ginger Rogers in Stage Door. BEST CAT MODEL Eve Arden--who sports a live cat wrap through much of Stage Door. MOST HEARTBREAKING PERFORMANCE Barbara Stanwyck in Stella Dallas. THE GOOD SPORT AWARD Joan Fontaine, trying to hold her own with Fred Astaire in The Damsel in Distress.

GregoryPeckfan
RE: STELLA DALLAS: This has long been on my to-see list but I haven't been able thus far to bring myself to see it. I do not have it recorded. Regarding Ann Miller in Stage Door; Yes, she looked like a teenager to me in this film. I'm surprised she got away with it. TomJH
The Film That Never Was of 1937: I, CLAUDIUS An Alexander Korda production aborted after star Merle Oberon was in a car accident. A BBC documentary, The Epic That Never Was, shows surviving clips of what was directed by the legendary Josef Von Sternberg. Based on these, we may well have lost out on the completion of a noteworthy epic, with an extraordinary performance from Charles Laughton. We shall never know, of course, what would have been, outside of those tantalizing clips. The Epic That Never Was is currently available on You Tube. You can judge what might have been for yourselves.

Swithin
1937: Best Actor--winner(s) are starred: Brian Aherne in The Great Garrick I was flirting with listing Brian Aherne in The Great Garrick, but I decided to save him for 1939, when I think he gave a really towering performance. Nevertheless he was great as The Great Garrick!
