Here are the films from 1954 that were mentioned that I have not seen as yet.

Elephant Walk with Abraham Soafer

It Should Happen to You with Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon

Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto with Toshiro Mifune

I've only seen these three. Elephant Walk has it's charms, and it was one of my mother's favorite movies. It Should Happen to You is a cute if inconsequential rom-com with Judy Holliday in top form. If you like her style, then this is must see; if not, you'll probably be irritated to no end.

My choice for you is Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto. Part one of a trilogy, it was followed by Samurai 2: Duel at Ichioji Temple in 1955 and Samurai 3: Duel at Ganryu Island in 1956. It tells the tale of legendary samurai Miyamoto, a major historical and cultural hero in Japan. It features some of the best color cinematography in film up to that point. All three movies are worth seeing, and would make a great evening's viewing for fans of Japanese cinema and samurai films.

The Gold of Naples

I have yet to see a great many of the films you list, Lawrence.  As I posted before, The Gold of Naples features a career best performance by Vittorio De Sica.  The Belles of St. Trinian's is another fun British comedy featuring Alastair Sim in drag as the headmistress of a girls school and some fine support from George Cole and Joyce Grenfell.  It is certainly worth seeking out.

Before we hit 1955 I would just like to mention that I am going with 1955 with regards Richard III.  Laurence Olivier was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in 1956 for Richard III but that film was first released in the UK in December, 1955 and was in the 1955 BAFTA Awards.

I forgot to mention my guilty pleasure of 1953, A Lion Is in the Streets. Jimmy Cagney as a Cajun politician who calls everyone "folkses" ('cause that's how us Suthun folkses talk) is nothing compared to the delights of the scene where Anne Francis as the swamp gal Flamingo tries to feed Barbara Hale to the alligators.

Favorite line of dialogue: Anne Francis (when she catches sight of Barbara Hale): "Who all's that?"

-----Bad luck for Jane Wyman, since this is the closest she gets to a nomination.  And it was very close.

-----The first appearance in the nominations for Ingmar Bergman.  No winners, but that will change.

-----This is also the first appearance for Satyajit Ray.  We'll see more of his films in future nominations.  And among future winners.

-----James Dean in East of Eden is clearly the greatest gap between quality of performance and quality of movie.

------Many, perhaps most, would argue that Mitchum is a lead, not supporting.  But arguably the children are the real focus of the movie.  And either Mitchum gets a supporting award or he gets nothing.

Here's an interesting behind the scenes shot from my favourite film of 1955, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. The painted backdrops are really apparent here, aren't they?

Robert Mitchum, not an actor easily impressed, would later call Charles Laughton the best director with whom he ever worked. It's a shame that it was Laughton's sole directorial effort.

With all of the many virtues that this dark fairy tale possesses, one contribution that should never be overlooked is that of cinematographer Stanley Cortez. The vision that we see on screen is a combination of Laughton AND Cortez. A gifted but still neophyte director like Laughton must have leaned on Cortez tremendously throughout the making of this classic.

SEXIEST SCENE

William Holden and Kim Novak's "Moonglow" dance in Picnic

BEST UNINTENTIONALLY FUNNY DIALOGUE

In Picnic:

BETTY FIELD (To Kim Novak): "If she (a pretty girl) loses her chance when she's young, she might as well throw all her prettiness away"

NOVAK: "I'm only 19."

FIELD: "And next summer you'll be 20.  And then 21, and then 40."

NOVAK: "You don't have to be morbid."

MOST "EWW! MOM" MOMENT:

When Betty Field is asking daughter Kim Novak if her boyfriend, Cliff Robertson, ever wants to do more than just kiss.  Then Field basically tells Novak to seal the deal with Robertson, saying "there won't be many more opportunities like the picnic tonight."  Awkward!

FUNNIEST LINE:

In Picnic:

After William Holden complains about his jacket being too tight:

VERNA FELTON: "I don't think anyone would mind if you took it off!"

(It's even funnier since this is like the second or third time she's casually suggested to Holden that he remove clothing).

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY AND SETS

The dream-like atmosphere of The Night of the Hunter.  The painted backgrounds and lighting gives the film a very eerie quality.  The opening scene showing Lillian Gish's face surrounded by the faces of the children singing the bible hymn is very ominous.

BEST CREEPER

Robert Mitchum's creepy preacher character in The Night of the Hunter.  He plays the charming creep so well and that's what makes him seem even more menacing.

BEST SCENE

Marilyn Monroe's famous white dress over the subway grate scene in The Seven Year Itch.

BEST BODY

William Holden's toned physique in Picnic.  Yeah he was too old for his role.  With a body like that, who cares?!

THE BETTE DAVIS LOOK-A-LIKE AWARD GOES TO:

The little girl in The Night of the Hunter !

BEST USE OF OLD SETS

The recycling of Norma Desmond's mansion in Sunset Blvd to be used as the kids' abandoned playhouse in Rebel Without a Cause.

SADDEST SCENE

Plato's fate at the end of Rebel Without a Cause

BEST INNUENDO

The fireworks scene between Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief

BEST SCENERY

The gorgeous French Riviera setting of To Catch a Thief

BEST BACHELOR PAD

Frank Sinatra's apartment in The Tender Trap

BEST SONG

"10 Cents a Dance" performed by Doris Day in Love Me or Leave Me.  This song would be memorably performed again by Cloris Leachman in the "Rhoda the Beautiful" episode of Season 3 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show

BEST MUSICAL NUMBER

Gene Kelly's roller skating number in It's Always Fair Weather.

MOST DISAPPOINTING FILM:

It's Always Fair Weather.  For a musical, a musical featuring Gene Kelly no less, this movie is kind of depressing.

MOST VERSATILE PERFORMER

Michigan J. Frog in One Froggy Evening.  His talents are on full display in this short.  He dances! He can also sing a variety of different styles including ragtime, tin pan alley and opera!

BIGGEST JERK OF 1955 (in film, not real life)

James Cagney playing the horrendous captain in Mister Roberts and again playing Doris Day's horrible husband/manager in Love Me or Leave Me

BEST SWAN SONG

William Powell's last film appearance, as the doctor in Mister Roberts. For someone with such a great career, it was nice that he was able to end his career on a high note.

SPEEDRACER'S TAKEAWAY FROM "GUYS AND DOLLS"

Why is Marlon Brando singing "Luck be a Lady" ? Get Frank Sinatra, he's right there! Brando is not a good singer.
