1959

BEST ACTOR

Dean Martin  Rio Bravo (really!!!)

No need for the "really," Lawrence. Dino is terrific in that film. I only wish he had had such strong opportunities in other fare rather than the lightweight fluffy stuff in which he was usually cast. Martin was a big western fan so I'm pretty sure he was proud of this, his major contribution to the genre.

ACTOR:

1. Cary Grant - North by Northwest

I watched my dvd copy of North by Northwest again the other night and was struck by how difficult many of Cary Grant's scenes were to play.  Not so much physically, but there is also that aspect.  It's the gamut he is put through by Ernest Lehman and Hitchcock.  It really is a tribute to Grant's ability that he manages to pull off so many outrageous sets of circumstances.

Here's a bit of Some Like It Hot minutiae:

George Raft and Edward G. Robinson did not get along, almost coming to blows during the making of Manpower in 1942. Robinson turned down the role of Little Napoleon when it was offered to him by Billy Wilder for his 1959 comedy. Whether or not he turned it down because rival gangster Spats Columbo was being played by Raft I'm not certain.

However, there is irony in the fact that the gangster flipping the coin (a la Raft) and who later pops out of the birthday cake to gun down Raft and his gang was played by Edward G. Robinson Jr..

I have always liked to think that Spats Columbo's final two words just before dying ("Some joke") have an insider meaning.

Nehemiah Persoff, who played Little Bonaparte in Some Like It Hot, turned 97 on August 2.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Persoff the sole person (certainly cast member) connected with Some Like It Hot who's still with us? Persoff had a half century career in show biz, much of it in television. But he also worked with the likes of Cagney, Bogart, Ladd, not to mention the Billy Wilder classic. I certainly hope that some people have been able to interview him for any reminiscences he may care to impart. There are so few left that worked in the Golden Age of films or early television.

Best Actor of 1959

JAMES MASON (Commander Max "Rammer" Easton), A Touch of Larceny

I love Mason's wonderfully droll comedy performance in this film, Bogie. It's a revelation for those who just think of this actor for his dramas. However, I always get a little confused as to whether this is a 1959 or 1960 film, thus I didn't include his performance on my list.

--------And for the second time, Tony Curtis is beat out by his own co-star.

--------Marilyn Monroe wins my Best Actress oscar for 1959. And that's the last time anyway in Hollywood does until 1967.

--------As it happened, North by Northwest, Rio Bravo, Anatomy of a Murder, Some Like it Hot and Imitation of Life were among the biggest grossers of 1959.  They would have made a better Best Picture selection that the ones that were nominated.

--------Fewer runners ups this year, though the actual nominees in Actress and the supporting characters were stronger than 1958's.  This may be due to the fact that my top 15 includes two documentaries, a Bresson film, and two choices whose cinematic qualities outweigh their thespian ones.

--------About two of my choices for best supporting actress:  Prokhorenko appears a quarter of the way into the movie, and leaves a quarter of the way from the end.  With the exception of a brief prologue Ivashov is the focus of the entire movie.  As for Remick, her character is clearly supporting her husband, and he's a supporting actor.  That's she's second in the cast list means little, only that they highlighted the attractive young wife over the relatively unknown actor playing her husband.

1959 - Don't wait for me. I took a long look at my list for this year and decided there wasn't enough to bother submitting it. What I may have picked is already getting more appreciation here than I could have given it, anyway.

I notice just one thing missing that I feel compelled to add. The Devil's Disciple isn't a stupendous film, but it's a pretty entertaining one for the presence of action hero priest Burt Lancaster. To save the life of his friend Kirk Douglas he put's aside his peaceful ways to single-handedly fight through British forces. With divine invulnerability and superhuman strength he overcomes all odds; he pushes heavy wooden tables over on multiple enemy soldiers, battles them with flaming logs and survives all the deadly explosions he causes. Masterpiece of acting or not, it's an amusing film for Burt, the closest thing to a real superhero the screen has ever seen, I'm thinking.

The important thing here is that you liked Lee Remick's performance in Anatomy of a Murder.  But I have to disagree with your characterization of her role as supporting.  Yes, she is married to supporting star, Ben Gazzara but he spends much of the film incarcerated and out-of-sight.  Remick's character on the other hand is the subject of the investigation and the focus of the film.  Did she, or didn't she?  Thus, IMO she is clearly the lead actress in the film.

Kay, there is no rule against being brief.  If you would like to give us a winner or two and perhaps a runner-up we would be most interested and will include it in our tally.
