I seem to have watched more good ones from this year. Edit: I stopped being lazy and counted: there are 13 listed so far that I haven't seen.

TomJH
It seems to me that, so far at least, all of the stars of Grand Hotel have been mentioned for their performances on this thread except Wallace Beery as the gruff businessman. Beery's not bad in the movie. In fact, I think he's pretty good. Interestingly, he's the only actor in the film that attempted a German accent in this Berlin-set film. There's always been a bit of a debate among buffs and critics as to which of the actresses came off best, Garbo Vs. Crawford. It's interesting that with the picks on this thread that there is still not clear cut winner. The debate continues.

TomJH
Oh, if you check my post, I did indeed nominate Wallace Beery in Grand Hotel -which I am watching right now Well, if you quickly remove his name from your list before anyone notices then I won't look like a fool for my "perceptive" observation, GPfan. Okay, okay, maybe that's asking a bit much of you. My mistake. Congratulations on being the only poster (so far) to nominate the only major Grand Hotel star courageous enough to try to sound as if he's German.

TomJH
Ah, Bogie I like your pick of Fields. 1932 was a significant film year for the Great Man, not only for his memorable roadhog campaign in If I Had A Million but for his portrayal of the strongest man in the kingdom King of Klopstokia in Million Dollar Legs. I have always assumed that the mythical crazy kingdom of Klopstokia had a direct influence in the creation of another crazy kingdom, Freedonia, in Duck Soup the following year at the same studio.
TomJH
I hope it's not considered cheating to go back and slightly alter your awards already given out. Recalling May Robson's performance in If I Had A Million, I went back to add her in as one of my five nominees in the 1932 Best Supporting Actress category, demoting Genevieve Tobin to Honourable Mention.
GregoryPeckfan
Based upon this thread and recommendations by posters about performances and being interested in seeing everything Robert Young ever did last night I watched The Sin of Madelon Claudett which I discussed in I JUST WATCHED. Oh, wow, was Robert Young so young! Having seen it I for sure would have had Helen Hayes among my choices for nomination for best actress in 1931 if we were going backwards.

LawrenceA
Nice choices, Bogie. It's odd that I seem to be the only one to put Crawford in the supporting category for Grand Hotel. I also had Dietrich for Blonde Venus on my shortlist, but went with Shanghai Express instead. I guess it's hard to argue with the gorilla dance.

I have most of the cast in Grand Hotel in the lead categories and most of Dinner at Eight in the supporting category. I don't know. I shall just have to watch them again!
