The death of Justice Scalia

Recommended Posts

So, Republicans have warned Obama that he should do nothing during his last year in office.  He might as well go golfing then.  But I suppose they would castigate him for that too.

and that is why so many gop voters have empowered donald trump because as you say, how scared is obama of eddie munster?

not very. the gop establishment has fcked up their party so the voters they're gonna answer a pee-wee herman mentality with a patton mentality

therefore trump.

having said that I myself do not begrudge obama picking his socialist now so he or she will be all ready to confirm spring or summer of next year...

providing nothing unfortunate happens in november...

go bernie!

I'll tell ya this much.

obama will pick an african american nominee deliberately and intentionally in my opinion to inflame racial tensions in this political year.

why?

because that's who he is.

Only racist would be inflame if the nominee is qualified.

Why?  Because that is the make up of a racist.

you misunderstand me, of course.

I think obama oughta choose the best individual according to his ideological bent (I'm given ya that) but of course any rational being oughta know, intellect is neither dictated or predetermined by one's race, gender or any other various physicalities.

if race and gender are factored into his selection process...

and this is what conservatives have been trying to communicate to the left for years...

that is racist.

if barack obama genuinely believes that race and gender are intellect-neutral than why would he ever use them as criteria in his selection?

this is one of the fine points where liberalism betrays itself and reduces it's rationale to a hypocritical crock. :D

Antonin Scalia was an affirmative-action appointee by Ronald Reagan, who said, ‘We don’t have an Italian American on the court, so we ought to have one."

Affirmative action doesn't mean giving a job to someone less qualified. It means, all things being equal, making up for past misdeeds by respecting balance and diversity.

If Obama nominated Jesus Christ, the Republicans would not allow it to come to a vote.  There will be NO appointment until after the next President is sworn in.  If that President is a Democrat, it will be 2018 before we see the seat filled, if then.

You're probably right. But Obama should still go ahead and do his job - one aspect of which is nominating a Supreme Court Justice when the need arises. There's no legitimate reason to not do his job with almost a year left in it.

Let the Republicans do the wrong thing if the wrong thing is to be done.

I really think it's less a matter of trolling than of the wingnut way of repeating their misinformation and demonstrating their near total foolishness. Trolls usually aren't sincere, but the wingnut really believes the nonsense they post. Read a bit of the comment section of any right wing site and their sincere kookiness is obvious.

Well, I won't deny the wingnut stuff, but trolls are those who deliberately say outrageous things, knowing it's bs, just to bug people. I'm pretty sure we're dealing with a troll here. I mean, post after post of thread ruination; short statements over and over that have no actual thought behind them - just guaranteed to be the opposite of what most others would be thinking.

Trolling.

A diverse society demands representation for all including its minorities.  It is not as simple as you paint it.

with progressivism it always becomes less simple when conservatism makes the point.

physicalities as a criteria for consideration of intellect.

rational minds will reject it.

and isn't that the underlying basis for racism?

then the issue becomes underrepresentation.

I would ask just at what point physical makeup becomes subservient to excellence of intellect.

The issue of representation isn't tied to the intellect of the candidate.    Instead it is tied to their background or cultural 'make-up'    One's entire background impacts how one views the world and this tends to impact the choices they make.  When the topic is politics that equates to policy choices.

The more representative a select group of individual are to the entire group they represent the more everyone's unique and varied background is represented.     Of course no selection system can ensure everyone's background is equally (proportionally) represented,  but sometimes it is clear when one sub-group is grossly over or under represented.

slice it any way you want. quotas is a bankrupt argument.

maybe a hundred years from now deferential consideration can be given to whites?

ring around the rosey.

and who decides when the pendulum has swung torwards minorities long enough? minorities?

the true folly of liberalism. injustice to remedy injustice.

cute.

If we had a Republican POTUS now, the GOP would want a new Justice picked "yesterday" to make certain that Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton could not do so were either of them to win in November.  Because they don't they are perfectly willing to deny the people the right to a full court to rule on their disputes.  Since choosing a nomine(e) is one of the responsibilities of the POTUS by law his not doing so would be betraying his oath of office.

HOW DARE THEY?  They have no right to place their power-hungry egos above the oaths they took to represent the people of this country.  They have already chosen to not confirm anybody nominated rather than judge each person on his or her own merits.  This is rank immaturity beneath even  schoolyard bullying.

I can remember the dustup when Nixon wanted Haynesworth and Carswell on the Court before finding somebody the Senate would approve.  In the past, Democrats have also been guilty of some of this nonsense  and that was just as wrong.  It's not about the folks on Capitol Hill but we who elected them to represent us and expect them to just that.

Disclosure:  I consider myself an Independent who votes the person rather than party.  I lean left on some issues and right on others.  I always have and this gets both sides angry with me because I won't buy into either one's whole package.  Folks like me are being drowned out by the bombast on both sides.

Global stocks sink into bear market

Fear has taken over stock markets around the world.

A broad benchmark of global stocks officially slipped into a bear market this week by closing more than 20% below its recent high.

************************************************************************

Bear markets happen when stocks start crashing. I hate to state facts but we are not getting leadership from Obama. I am a U.S. citizen and as long as TCM allows me to post I will. This is what our Country was created for, we are not socialists.

Who said anything about a quota.    Equal representation is the issue here.    It is why this country was created.

Man you are a wingnut.

yeah, but obama is so splendidly ego-neutral, ain't he?

obama has demonstrated himself time and time again to be just as power-hungry and as immature as they.

the man is so sure that the american electorate is so in love with his ideals that they're sure to vote in a democrat this november that he has to name a replacement for scalia right away!

what courage of conviction.

Well, he did win the highest office in the land. Twice.

So it's a pretty safe bet that the majority of the American electorate does share his ideals.

If he was ever power hungry, there's no need to be now that he's reached and is almost ended the top position, is there.

As usual, your view is just childish petulance at having lost the election. No reality for you, no sir.

obama is so sure of his persuasiveness that he resorts to wholesale executive actioning.

that's an abdication of leadership.

obama knows that he is so far beyond the child-like gop that he gives up trying to reach them (with his intellect?)

incredible! the master has failed
