Even if one doesn't really like the songs or his admittedly dated singing style (ever notice how Judy Garland built a career largely singing songs that Jolson sang first and better?), one must admit that Jolson was an absolutely electrifying presence onstage and on film.

Nope. Don't remember Al's versions of "Over the Rainbow," "The Trolley Song," "Get Happy," or "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart."

 

If you're talking about "You Made Me Love You," Judy's version is better. If you're talking about "Swanee," Judy's career was already built by the time she started using it in concert appearances.

 

But I'm a HUGE Jolson fan and am glad someone remembered the 120th anniversary of his birth.
