Oops.

A wonderful narrator deserves mention today.

Producer/writer/narrator John Nesbitt (49) 1910-1960.

We've heard his fine narrative voice numerous times on TCM in the short films John Nesbitt's 'Passing Parade' from the 1930s and 1940s.

Each short ran about 9 to 12 minutes, and covered numerous subjects of interest, featuring many familiar character actors of the time.

One popular short "Annie Was a Wonder" with Kathleen Freeman was nominated for an Oscar.

Other subjects featured shows about mail-order marriages, explains how banks handle money in accounts that have been left there indefinitely, and shows the life of a car from the moment it comes off the assembly line to the day it winds up in a junkyard.

Unfortunately I couldn't locate any personal info about Mr. Nesbitt.

Hi Mongo,

"Frankenweenie" -- now there's a movie to investigate. I've never heard about it but the name alone is intriguing.

And, I loved "Beetlejuice", so I'll have to track it down.

You don't know this but you are 'world famous'... You are known to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and The Canada Council on Aging simply because I have announced at various times that I must get home to view this birthday thread.

Today, I had a breakfast meeting with the CCA and told them I had to get back to the Birthday thread.

And, a couple of months ago I attended a rehearsal of the CPO and while looking down from the first balconey several members asked, "How's Mongo"... I guess that name has galloped through the grapevine here.

So, if you get a phone call from the KGB while I'm in Russia, you'll know who to blame!!!!!!

Frankenweenie is only about 30 minutes long. It's a darkly funny story of a dog who is killed (I said it was dark!) and brought back to life by his owner, Victor Frankenstein (Barret Oliver). Shelly Duvall, Daniel Stern and Sophia Coppolla are also featured.

Larry, I've been to a bit of Canada once when I went to Niagara Falls. It's nice to know that the name Mongo is spoken there, thanks to you.

Also appreciate your praise of the Happy Birthday thread and I'm glad that you enjoy reading it daily, along with others..

It makes it all worthwhile.

In the event the KGB calls, I'll keep the phone off the hook.

Hi again Mongo,

Glad to hear you went to Niagara Falls. It is beautiful and spectacular......

I knew you'd have a good laugh about the KGB -- but if you see any guys in trench coats down in Florida named Basil or Boris or Igor -- run!!!!!!!!............

...especially Igor. >>

"My grandfather used to work for your grandfather. Rates have gone up"

First thing I think of when I hear the name Igor.

Second thing that comes to mind:

"Werewolf"

"There wolf. There castle"

I just wanted to say "good morning", mongo, and keep up the good work.

Another very dependable character actor passed away on this day in 1977 at age 70:

Willis Bouchey

I was watching "Don't Bother to Knock" last night and he was the bartender in the hotel bar where Anne Bancroft [in her film debut] was singing. Many people will remember him in countless westerns and war films.

If I could figure out how to post pictures, I would post one here - a very recognizable face.

Since I can't quite master that yet, here is the name of a website that I am going to bookmark for my reference, and that others may find useful when you have a name but can't put a face to it:

www.what-a-character.com

It's a good resource but [as with many sites] not an exhaustive one; for example, you can see Willis Bouchey but not Warner Anderson [who I just saw in a good Van Johnson film, "Go for Broke!"].

This is a propos of nothing, but I just wanted to let the world know that I adored Jim Davis when I was a girl, and he was the only reason I ever looked in on "Dallas" from time to time. He was the epitome of the laconic, quietly manly cowboy, and I loved his interesting, drawling speaking voice. He was on a TV show called "Rescue 8" - anyone remember that one? It was the forerunner of the TV show "Emergency," but Davis and his partner were older and more businesslike.

In the unlikely event I ever got married again, I'd want one like Jim. Bless him.

RIP Robert Walker - an excellent actor who is esteemed by many filmgoers. I should look for a film of his today that I haven't seen ["Her Highness and the Bellboy" is on later] or perhaps an old favourite ["The Clock"].

Also, in the "Posthumous" category, we can add Sam Levene [1905 - 1980].

John Huston passed away on this day in 1987 at age 81.

Thanks for the additions, wordmaster.

Believe it or not I did have John Huston listed to the right of my notes (died in 1987 at age 81), and managed to overlooked the great filmmaker.

However, I didn't have the wonderful character actor Sam Levene in my notes, and I'm sorry I missed him.

And yes, Robert Walker was indeed an excellent actor and deserved better in life.

One thing for sure, he should have received an Oscar nomination for his outstanding role in Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train". May he rest in peace.
