vecchiolarry
Hi Mongo, Happy Birthday to Jessie Royce Landis; but are you sure she was born in 1904? She certainly was a character in real life too. She was married to a General, who ran the Pentagon or was close to running it?.. He only allowed her to make 1 movie a year after their marriage and only for about 3 weeks absence. Jessie was a good friend of Mamie Eisenhower and when she complained to Ike that ?one of your generals is holding me hostage?, and ?can?t you send him off to a tiny war somewhere?, President Eisenhower said, ?But Jessie, we need you here in Washington to keep our parties from getting dull???. Once I escorted her to a banquet at the Yugoslavian Embassy in Rome for Madame Tito. All the food was dished up by waiters and waitresses out of large bowls and sort of slopped on our plates. When I asked her what she thought of the ?service?, she whispered, ?Well, I?ve seen worse but I didn?t think much of the hair in the mashed potatoes!!??? In 1967, Canada?s centennial year, the Governor General and his wife (the Vaniers) gave a ball at Rideau Hall in Ottawa for the diplomatic corps and my parents and their friends were invited. Jesse and her general were across the room with the Americans. General Georges Vanier and Madame Vanier were announced and my mother?s friend asked her what Madame Vanier?s first name was; my mother drew a blank and said she didn?t know that it had ever been publicized. Just then, as Madame Vanier was passing Jessie Royce Landis, Jessie greeted her with, ?Pauline, darling!??. My mother said, ?Well, now we know???. Also, one of Jessie?s dear cohorts was Moyna MacGill, another hoot?? Interesting that she died the same day as Jessie?s birthday. One of my fondest memories (and one I?ve just remembered today because of you!) was sitting in the lobby of the Dorchester Hotel in London, waiting for Pola Negri to descend from her suite and being surrounded by Jessie Royce Landis, Moyna MacGill, Betty Blythe and Moira Lister all chatting away about what a wonderful, young gentleman I was to escort Pola to the set of ?The Moonspinners? on her first day?s shooting?. I miss those old dolls! Larry
bansi4
And right you are, Larry. Miss Landis was born in 1896 and died at age 75 in 1972. I mixed her up with Cary Grant who was born in 1904, when I was figuring out their slight age difference. And as usual, your recollections are a joy to read, especially about the 'old dolls' of Hollywood.

gwtwbooklover
Happy Birthday! Ricardo Montalban I hope it was a good one for you. I so admire Ricardo's work and enjoy his presence on the silver screen and TV. Imagine my surprise to learn that this man has such a wealth of films after knowing him only for The Fantasy Island series what a pleasant discovery. And I have to say Ricardo seems overlooked for the strides he made in Hollywood for ethnic actors to me he is right up there with Sidney Poitier and Desi Arnaz. Keep up the good work Mongo. BTW I'm turning the big 37 next Sunday December 3rd-3 years from 40..............................................................

klondike
Hey, Mongo! Sorry to check-in with this one so late but I felt it was important! A last little footnote for birthday-boy Barry Coe: he also has the bizarre distinction of a TV drama claim-to-fame: on a 1962 episode of Bonanza ("First Born"), he played the one-shot role of Clay Stafford, Little Joe's only non-Cartwright half-brother. I swear it's true; would I lie about this?!
Bartlett
Robert Goulet...legend has if whenever Elvis Presley saw him on television he would take out his 45 and shoot the television and say "That's enough of that SH-T! It was rumored that he shot out at least 250+ television whenever he saw Goulet, because he hated Goulet so much. As the matter of fact his "Memphis Mafia" had at least over 100 Televisions secured in a storage room because it was a given that sooner or later Elvis was going to blow away Goulet the moment he saw him on television. It's a good thing they never met in real life, or Goulet would have been "Swiss Cheese"! LOL
klondike
Wow, thanks for linking that up for me, Bartlett; I'd heard of Presley's propensity for shooting-out TV's, just never knew that Broadway's "Sir Lancelot" was the catalyst! Here's another Goulet factoid that may surprise a few folks: although RG was typically considered the quintessentially suave French Canadian, he was actually born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts. (Not hard to imagine, really, as the milltowns of northern Mass doubled their populations in the early 20th century w/ Quebec migrants who worked the shoe & furniture factories.) JackBurley
Thanks Mr. Mongo. It seems Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. has been doing voice over work in the past few years. He did a Batman cartoon and was the voice of "Alfred Pennyworth" in the animated series Justice League in 2004. Good for him! It's also worth noting that Mr. Zimbalist was the son of the accomplished violinist/conductor.

Good for him! > > It's also worth noting that Mr. Zimbalist was the son > of the accomplished violinist/conductor. I've been a fan of Efrem Zimbalist from his "77 Sunset Strip" days. I pass his childhood home every day on the way home from work. It's on East 49th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. It's a brick house on a block of brownstones. The house has now been broken up into individual apartments, but there is still evidence of its past if you know where to look. Over the front door is a weathered stone carving of a violin, a tribute to Zimbalist Sr.'s career as a concert musician. Efrem Jr.'s mother was the opera singer, Alma Gluck. I hope he is well and thriving. By the way, this house is across the street from Katharine Hepburn's brownstone, which has been recently renovated a bit, but still looks to be unoccupied. Last I heard, the asking price for that house was $6 million.
bansi4
Thanks Jack, for the additional info. jdb1, that is interesting about the childhood home of Mr. Zimbalist, especially across the street from Katharine Hepburn. jdb1
mongo, I saw Dick Shawn perform live once, so long ago that I don't remember where, but I do remember that he was really funny. He did all sorts of humor in his act, including very sophisticated political humor. I though he was a very talented actor/comedian who never really got the exposure he should have gotten in films. I think he was one of those performers who are very hard to characterize, and he was wasted in many B movies. His performance in "The Producers" wasn't far off from the kind of thing he did in his act. (I also thought he was very good looking.)
