First of all, I want to say that this movie is easily in my Top 10 of All-Time. The music, setting, tone, vibe, etc. etc. are perfectly blended together. I'd pick this movie over any of the Bond movies any day (though they are quite different).

 

Anyway...

 

I was just wondering if there are any other movies that are like this movie as a whole. The dark tone, plot, etc. is what I look for in movies like that and I haven't ever seen/found very many movies that are in the same vain, or whatever.

 

So, could some of you please suggest other movies like the superb The Ipcress File?

Since I'm sure you're already aware of the two 1960s sequels to THE IPCRESS FILE, which are FUNERAL IN BERLIN (1966) and BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN (1967), I'd try seeking out the rather obscure DANGER ROUTE (1968), starring Richard Johnson.

 

Around the same time, Johnson had starred in a couple of campy, 007-ish updates of the "Bulldog Drummond" character, in DEADLIER THAN THE MALE and SOME GIRLS DO, but DANGER ROUTE has him playing a more gritty, realistic agent, with no gadgets, and is more along the lines of IPCRESS or FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. A great little forgotten spy flick.

 

I'd also take a look at THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD (1965), with Richard Burton, THE DEADLY AFFAIR (1967), with James Mason, THE BLACK WINDMILL (1974), with Michael Caine, WHEN EIGHT BELLS TOLL (1971), with Anthony Hopkins, SCORPIO (1973), with Burt Lancaster, INNOCENT BYSTANDERS (1972), with Stanley Baker, and A DANDY IN ASPIC (1968), with Laurence Harvey.

 

Though a WWII-set spy tale, you should also check out the excellent THE COUNTERFEIT TRAITOR (1962), starring William Holden, if you haven't already.

I was aware of the sequels, though I've not seen them. I've heard of some of those others you suggested, but I haven't seen too many of them... only a few. Those suggestions will give me something to look into.
