normandie7
The world of Erte is a dream world. No other designer produced such fantastical and breathtaking designs. His career at MGM was a short-lived one, perhaps beacuse most of his amazing drawings did not translate so well on film. The Martin Lawrence Galleries are holding series of exhibitions on Erte. The online brochures can be downloaded here: http://martinlawrence.com/erte.html Amazing!!! Can you tell I love his work?

JackBurley
Please don't make me repeat lzcutter's message, GarboManiac... There's no getting around it: Erte was talented, but he was not alone. To say he was the best of all? Them's fightin' words...
GarboManiac
Ok, ok! I was just trying to save it! One can just NEVER make such blanket statements without expecting the ensuing onslaught of criticism! So, I will just step aside and let the slings and arrows soar!!
JackBurley
I don't see one sling nor arrow in this thread. No one said anything against Mr. Erte (whom we praise). We only brought bouquets for others too. 'Tis a gracious group here...
GarboManiac
Ah!!!! I beg pardon, humbly, etc. Well, personally, Adrian is THE GREATEST DESIGNER OF ALL TIMES!!!!! (did I get a rise out of anyone??) ;-)

GarboManiac
Ha! You're swell!!! I think he really was. With Travis Banton right behind him. But, then for cryin' out loud, ya can't forget Cecil, and . . . ! And, Edith was great! As Jack once quoted, "Edith Head gives . . . . HEY! Are we talkin' fashion or interior design? Should we distinquish? Or does it matter?
SamTherapy
mmmmmm . . . love RT's work. I would love to, in my lifetime, acquire one of his sculptures. Here's a lovely site on him: http://www.erte.com/ ~Peace & Deco be with you~
GarboManiac
Oh, my! He was just fabulous! Beautiful drawings. Yes, he was in a class by himself (except for Beaton?).

GarboManiac
Again, WOW! I don't think his creations transferred poorly to the screen. They look pretty outrageous to me! And, wasn't that what he was going for? Beautiful stuff!
normandie7
Yes, isn't it beautiful? I just adore his designs, be it sculpture, clothes, jewellery or drawings. In my opinion ( and I know many will disagree), Erte stands out from the rest of Hollywood designers by the distinct fantasy-land quality of his designs. His love and worship of women just radiate out every one of his creations.
GarboManiac
In my opinion, the fantasy designs are what make a designer stand out. Adrian and his Marie Antoinette collection was outstanding, along with his Wizard of Oz costumes! Beaton's Ascot number is one of the all time outstanding moments in film. Banton's Cleopatra, Devil is a Woman and the past-life sequence from On a Clear Day were all unbelievable. Orry-Kelly never really got to do much fantasy cause WB was so down to earth. If he had, he would have proven himself to be an outstanding member of the club due to his flair in The Dolly Sisters. Oh, and I can't forget Vera West doing all of those Arabian Nights movies with Maria Montez!
JackBurley
"Banton's Cleopatra, Devil is a Woman and the past-life sequence from On a Clear Day were all unbelievable." You're getting your B's all mixed up. Cecil Beaton did the period costumes for On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (Scaasi did the contemporary clothing). Jean Louis' costumes for Mary Healey in The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. were terrific too.
sandykaypax
normandie, thanks for the link. FABULOUS! Some of the costumes in the Beautiful Girl fashion show sequence in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN seem to be inspired by Erte designs. Sandy K
