BallofFire
One example might be Cary Grant as James Bond. I look forward to hearing your ideas. (sorry if it's already been done) Message was edited by: BallofFire
SusannO
I want to think about this but my two cents...how about QUIT remaking classics that are perfect to begin with (i.e.. Father of the Bride. Cute new but come on, the original was great).
BallofFire
I agree - don't mess with perfection. The only good thing I can think of about modern remakes is that it might interest someone in seeing the original.
coolrob1955
With the increasing sophistication of computer generated graphics, I predict that within the next twenty to fifty years we will see new films featuring deceased classic actors. Cary Grant as James Bond ? certainly, why not ? I read a story by Howard Waldrop (I think), in Analog or Asimov's back in the 80's about this very subject. About a pirate movie production company making movies entirely generated by computers, with Clark Gable, Bette Davis etc. He even mentions the legal complications over image rights (there are some cases in the courts at the moment concerning actors or the estates of actors trying to put a legal lock on the future use of an actors image). If your conception of computer generated images in movies in limited to Disney cartoons or flash-bang special effects in sci-fi movies, then you havn't been paying attention. The next Star Wars movie with Errol Flynn as Obi Wan Kenobi, why not. Regards
BallofFire
Already in 1982 "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" featured many classic actors who had been spliced in.
SusannO
Point well taken on wanting to see the original. I think with the exception of Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, they just don't make them like they used to. Which leads me to sort of changing your topic so apologies up front. Sidney Poitier could stand in any D.Wash. movie and only make it that much better. I am starring Gary Cooper in Kevin Costner's movie particularly "Message In A Bottle" and Dana Andrews replacing Russell Crowe except in "Gladiator" which would need to be Burt Lancaster only because of his size. So my question for you is, a film like "Gladiator", clearly belongs to Russell Crowe and always will. Gable in GWTW. Who did it so right the first time we could not even imagine another actor!! (I am new too so we will finish your topic first).

Very, very scary indeed.

SusannO
My only problem with this is that the actors have no way of "protecting" themselves from projects they would not have wanted to do. Wasn't there a Super Bowl commercial a while back with John Wayne and Budwiser? I believe this was disputed by his estate. I know they are personalities and have put themselves out there but make it personal...would you want someone using your image in a movie that you did not approve of? Especially in today's world with drugs, violence and sex...
SusannO
Hey, BallofFire, we ran off with your question!!! What do you think of my replacements mentioned earlier?
coolrob1955
I'll get that Connie Willis book at the first opportunity. Thanks for the tip. Can you imagine a future where flesh and blood film actors are superfluous. I don't think this will effect (affect) star actors (do you like you're favorite actor or actress merely for their acting ability, or because they turn you on in ways that can't be reproduced by a computer ?). There's going to be a massive slump in the job market in the movie industry, not merely for actors. No more carpenters, electricians, cinematographers and a thousand other jobs associated with movie making. At least the end credits will be shorter. GarboManiac
Well, I would cast YOU'VE GOT MAIL with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, and Washington Square with Olivia DeHavilland and Montgomery Clift! How's that for original??? Now, let's see, who would play the suppporting parts?
BallofFire
I think your replacements are interesting especially the one about Portier/ Denzel.
inglis
Ya I could see Cary Grant playing James Bond, in fact he would have made a great first Bond then Sean Connery .
SusannO
You've Got Mail...great, and was originally cast with....Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan! Check out "The Shop Around The Corner". It was the original. I agree completely that Jimmy Stewart could be in most Tom Hanks movies. Even Saving Private Ryan, which I have watched only with my husband telling me to cover my face! My Poitier/Washington comparison is due not to the obvious, African-American, but their ability to both play drama and romantic characters with equal talent. I loved Mr. Tibbs, but not romantically. However, who did not fall for the handsome, All-American, smart doctor who gave Spencer Tracy a run for his money in Look Who's Coming to Dinner. I am embarrassed by the lack of my generations lead actors in that they can be counted on one hand.
SusannO
Another underrated actor...Greg Kinnear. He is wonderful. He could be replaced by Melvin Douglas. Both are incredibly handsome, great supporting actors and should be considered more often for leading roles. And Jean Stapleton's role, a younger Jean Stapleton? Just kidding. Gracie Allen?? traceyk65
If you do pick up that book, MetryRoad, hang in there. The slang was a little hard to keep up with, for me anyway, but it was worth it.
coolrob1955
Dear traceyk65, thanks for the warning about the language, but I read 'A Clockwork Orange' and survived. 'Finnegans Wake' almost had me beat though. And I'm currently working my way through 'Tristram Shandy', which is actually quite funny. wordmaster
Please bear with me while I reverse the concept, just for fun. I was reading an on-line publication this morning, "The Film Noir Sentinel", that I receive regularly, and highly recommend to all film aficionados [guess how long I have been waiting to slip that word into a post...]. Anyway, in one of their regular columns, the columnist was talking about an upcoming film by Susan Sarandon and put forward this recasting of a classic film with modern actors: Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" The columnist seemed to be saying that this would be a bad thing. I am not so sure...I think it would be fun to watch those two go tooth and nail. Thank you for allowing me this slight distraction from the topic at hand.
cinemabuff64
SusannO...I agree with you about Greg Kinnear. He has great comedic timing,is utterly charming and is just so pleasant to see on screen. Here is my contribution to the thread.....How about casting Tracy and Hepburn in "Something's Got To Give"?,or, "Chicago" with Jane Russell,Betty Grable or Marilyn Monroe, and John garfield?
