The first actor/actress that comes to mind..

Totally agree.  My best guess is that his first two roles (the other being a murder suspect in In the Heat of the Night) may have become somewhat typecast him and prevented him from being thought of as potential leading-man material. This despite the fact that he arrived on the scene just as the era of character-actor-as-star was gearing up (Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, etc.)

I guess I'm less surprised that he didn't become a big star than I am that he worked so sporadically (he only appeared in a total of 13 films in the 70s and 80s). He was certainly talented enough to deserve more onscreen exposure.
