Fredric March also was an early freelancer after his deal with Paramount in the early 1930s. But I think the one who really bucked the system was Charles Bickford. He was a true rebel in the studio era! He fought with Louis B. Mayer and punched a director to get out of his contract at MGM and he worked independently the rest of his career.
