The New Blacklist

Russiagate may have been aimed at Trump to start, but it's become a way of targeting all dissent

".....the endgame to all of this lunacy is a world where every America-critical movement from Black Lives Matter to Our Revolution to the Green Party is ultimately swept up in the collusion narrative along with Donald Trump and his alt-right minions, you haven't been paying attention.

That's because #Russiagate, from the start, was framed as an indictment not just of one potentially traitorous Trump, but all alternative politics in general........

We've jumped straight past debating the efficacy of democracy to just reflexively identifying most anti-establishment sentiment as illegitimate, treasonous, and foreign in nature. ....

A major target of this idiocy has been Sanders, who is already being pitched to the public as the Kremlin's next Manchurian Candidate. "When Russia interferes with the 2020 election on behalf of Democratic nominee Bernie Sanders," the Washington Post unironically asked last November, "how will liberals respond?" .......

Unless you really believe that Bernie Sanders is a Russian agent, it's incredibly suspicious that

a major consequence of the #Russiagate mania has been the disappearance of progressive voices from traditionally blue-state media. ....

Papers like the Washington Post and the New York Times, as well as cable channels like CNN and MSNBC, still routinely hire Republicans and even Trump supporters as commentators to provide "balance." But there's virtually no one in the popular press representing the 43% of Democrats who cast a dissenting vote two years ago. .......

....Parts of the Russiagate story may be real. Sleazeballs like Paul Manafort and Trump are, like Putin himself, capable of anything. We'll find out soon what exactly they all got up to together, if anything.

But we should already be able to admit that others – like the millions of Americans on both sides of the aisle who voted against status quo politicians two years ago – aren't, and weren't ever, traitors.

And any campaign to label them as such is potentially more dangerous than anything, even a Trump presidency."

Bernie Sanders endorses Marie Newman in fight for Dan Lipinski seat: Big boost

" The Newman/Lipinski contest for the 3rd Congressional District will be a test of the political power of newly energized progressive Democrats on city/southwest suburban political turf anchored by a cluster of old-style remnants of Democratic machine wards on Chicago’s Southwest Side. ......

Bernie Sanders was right, and Democrats are running on his message. But will the party listen?

.......... The most obvious example of this shift has occurred is in health care policy: Sanders’ single-payer style “Medicare for All” plan was widely panned by Beltway pundits and prognosticators in 2016 as hopelessly idealistic and a political non-starter. Now, though, Sanders has 16 co-sponsors on a single-payer bill, including potential 2020 contenders Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y. The Democratic establishment, too, has come around to the idea that pushing for a single-payer style system is the correct thing to do. .....
Beyond health care, Booker has rolled out a plan to implement a jobs guarantee, Gillibrand and Booker want to legalize marijuana and they, along with Harris, have sworn off corporate PAC money. That first one is more than even Sanders dared to call for back in 2016; the latter two are straight out of his playbook. Even Sanders’ push for labor law reform, a dream of activists that didn’t happen under the Obama administration (despite Democrats having 60 votes in the Senate), has garnered its fair share of backers. .........

More Democrats will be running Sanders-style campaigns over the next few cycles regardless of what the party does, thanks to simple political reality and voters’ distaste for dictates from on high. The party’s power to decide for its voters is ebbing. And, for that, progressives — even ones that voted for Hillary Clinton — have Bernie to thank. "

Over and over again, Republicans say we cannot possibly afford to make health care a right through a Medicare-for-all program.

But when it comes to spending $716 billion on the military,

all of a sudden there's deafening silence from my Republican colleagues about the deficit.

This is what oligarchy looks like. This is what greed is doing to our country.

Amazon (whose CEO, Jeff Bezos, is the richest person in the world) used its enormous power to kill a modest tax designed to address the affordable housing crisis in Seattle.

Amazon Crushes a Small Tax That Would Have Helped the Homeless

Seattle quickly walked back a tax on major businesses that would have raised money for affordable housing after Amazon threatened to stop construction in the city.

Former Clinton & Obama staffers are a mainstay of cable TV, as are establishment Dem consultants.

However, cable TV offers almost no regular recurring voices from the progressive/Sanders wing of the party, despite that wing's ascendance and relevance.

This is not an accident.

Many political reporters and news outlets that claim to be objective actually have ideology, but it's not necessarily partisan -- it's an ideological deference to power.
