TopBilled Posted April 29, 2016 Thought I'd make a thread, since we will probably have the schedule information in the next week or so. I think Van Johnson is a shoo-in. Why? It's his hundredth birthday on August 25th. He was an MGM contract player for many years, and a lot of his films are in the TCM/Turner library. I'd be very surprised if he was not honored. Also maybe-- Lena Horne. STORMY WEATHER is on the July schedule. Could it be repeated for Lena in August..?
TopBilled Posted May 12, 2016 We're still waiting to find out who this year's honorees will be. Last year the information was released on May 9th. Hopefully we will hear something today or tomorrow. Or else it won't be until next week. Schedule details are never revealed on the weekend.

Hopefully we will hear something today or tomorrow. Or else it won't be until next week. Schedule details are never revealed on the weekend. I'll bet that TCM is still finalizing the rights to certain titles and are waiting to release the schedule until they have everything in order. I noticed that WINCHESTER '73 and DESTRY RIDES AGAIN have recently both been pulled from the July schedule. I still think that James Stewart will be featured in this year's SUTS line-up, though, because TCM will be airing HARVEY in June and it's a Universal title the programmers would surely want to repeat. I didn't realise the two westerns were pulled...bummer. I agree the programmers are probably still finalizing the rights on some of the other titles. As for HARVEY-- that could just be a one-time airing. When TCM broadcast IVY (a Universal noir with Joan Fontaine) back in January, it was not repeated. They have had several themes and birthday spotlights where it could have worked again on the schedule. There are plenty of MGM and Columbia films TCM can use for a Jimmy Stewart SUTS day. And I agree that he will probably get one. If HARVEY is scheduled again, and if those Universal westerns resurface, we will mention it here in the thread. Barton_Keyes Posted May 12, 2016 Interesting... TCM has posted on their social media platforms this afternoon that they are letting members of the TCM Backlot fan club vote on one of the SUTS selections this year. This is, I presume, what was meant in the promo by "opportunities to influence programming." Members have the option to select either Hedy Lamarr or Ava Gardner. I realize that TCM is a business and it has always operated as a business, but I think it is not right to offer people who can afford membership in their fan club greater influence than other TCM viewers. This suggests that people with that kind of money to spare somehow have better taste than those that don't. I didn't mean to go off on that little tangent, but the democratic socialist in me couldn't resist. At any rate, I guess we won't be seeing the SUTS schedule until next week at the earliest so members have time to vote.

Well, since I'm not paying money to be a member of this club, I guess it does not matter what artists I would like to see.

Are we to assume that they have 30 days decided, and they are letting the Backlot members pick the remaining day-- but it has to be one of those MGM contract actresses..? Is that what is going on? So yeah, I guess we won't have a finalized schedule until that is done. When does the voting need to be completed by..?

Is that what is going on? So yeah, I guess we won't have a finalized schedule until that is done. When does the voting need to be completed by..? Good questions. I would assume at this point that it's just the one honoree the programmers are letting the fans decide on. As I understand it from what I've read on social media, it has to be either Hedy Lamarr or Ava Gardner -- both of whom, as you note, were MGM contract players. So it's fairly easy to fill 24 hours with either actresses films. I'm not a member of the TCM Backlot, so I have no information regarding when this vote needs to be completed.

I think it is significant they are not letting Backlot members vote on films, only on the performers (and they are making those choices very limited). Barton_Keyes Posted May 13, 2016 So it now seems that TCM Backlot members will get to decide on two SUTS honorees this year -- one male and one female. As previously mentioned in this thread, the options for the female star are MGM contract players Hedy Lamarr and Ava Gardner. This morning TCM announced on social media that Backlot members will also get to pick one of two Warner Bros. stars -- James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson. Once more, as TopBilled has said, it's significant that Backlot members will only get to decide who is honored from a very limited number of performers and that they are not getting to vote regarding which films will be programmed. In my opinion-- if a vote is cast for Hedy Lamarr, it should not be for TCM to re-air BOOM TOWN for the millionth time. Instead, it should be for TCM to air SAMSON AND DELILAH, which is her most famous film. It would be more beneficial to vote for a classic Paramount film by an iconic director, where Hedy is at her best-- then to just use this whole thing as an excuse to show films in the TCM/Turner library the programmers will pick without input from viewers. Plus, these are titles that can be played any day of the year. And how many times have Cagney and Robinson been featured? Don't get me wrong, I love them-- but how about foreign actors who played gangsters in British or Italian films? Wouldn't that be less predictable and more interesting?
