Did Donald Trump ask Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, or didn't he?  Well he certainly did so today - right on camera on the White House lawn he called upon Ukraine and China to investigate the Bidens.

Is this a strategy of committing a crime right out in the open to normalize it?

The thoughts of an anonymous whistleblower:

"Thank you, Mr. President, for confirming in front of the world what I said about your conversation on the phone."

Impeachment, the First Time Around

He had been a polarizing president, cherished as well as deplored for his excitability, his stubbornness, his gift for demagoguery. A hair-trigger sensitivity to slights made him self-pitying and prone to a corrosive paranoia. He railed against establishment elites and gave succor to white supremacists. He rejected congressional oversight and barreled forward, declaring that he could hire and fire whomever he wanted, even as his impetuous dismissals drew complaints that he was obstructing justice.

It’s hard to forget the words of one disappointed spectator at (Andrew) Johnson’s trial: “Most men prefer to be deceived, cheated, anything rather than to be bored.”

The highlight for me was when he relented and allowed J.D. Roberts toadying second question about Adam Schiff being contacted by the whistleblower and Trump just about wet his knickers and bellowed that Schiff had co-written the report.  That was hilarious.  Where was the guy with the giant butterfly net?

And of course, the report was written long before Schiff was contacted and when he was it was just for procedural advice as many Bengazi whistleblowers had done before with Republican lawmakers.

Trump will tell any lie, no matter that there is zero evidence for it. I'm sure Robert De Niro was

amused by Trump's You talkin' to me response.

But the Senate did NOT convict him.  Interestingly, one of the heroes in JFK's book Profiles in Courage, was the senator who voted NOT to convict Johnson despite the other GOPers pressuring him.

The lesson is that no matter how much a president is hated, disliked, incompetent or just plain bad, there is little chance the Senate will convict him.

I saw a clip of De Niro on CNN last Sunday. When they mentioned trump he started cursing up a storm. It was hilarious that the host had to remind him that even though this was cable this was still Sunday and so they bleeped him out.

He's got some kind of a new movie on Netflix, which he promoted in between cursing trump out.

It's very obvious that Bobby can't stand Trump and is happy to let everybody know it.

Trump raised Biden with Xi in June call housed in highly secure server

.......During a phone call with Xi on June 18, Trump raised Biden's political prospects as well as those of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who by then had started rising in the polls, according to two people familiar with the discussion.

In that call, Trump also told Xi he would remain quiet on Hong Kong protests as trade talks progressed. ........

Just a quick note to remind people that Trump has twice in the last 72 hours

implied that what is happening to him now

(facing even the *prospect* of responsibility, for the first time in 70+ years, for a *lifetime* of crimes)

is the worst thing that has happened in human history

Trump covers up his high Crimes until they’re exposed

— then says “So what? I’ll do it again: here, watch me.
See? That didn’t hurt so much, did it?”

It’s a normalizing technique that works — until it doesn’t.

Another whistleblower has come forward, this time alleging 'inappropriate efforts' to influence Trump's tax audit

".......In his letter, first widely reported this week, Neal described the whistleblower's allegations of "evidence of possible misconduct" as credible.

"This is a grave charge that appreciably heightens the Committee's concerns about the absence of appropriate safeguards as part of the mandatory audit program and whether statutory codification of such program or other remedial, legislative measures are warranted," he wrote.

Neal also wrote that his committee had "raised these concerns repeatedly"........

Trump's kids are negotiating *billions* in deals overseas that directly benefit Trump, which Don Jr. summarizes as "selling a cheeseburger"

while his dad attacks Hunter Biden over *nothing*

America should've spent 100,000 hours discussing foreign deals closed by the Trump kids

before we even heard the name "Hunter Biden" once

Trump pins Ukraine call on Energy Secretary Rick Perry

Trump .. then threw Perry into the mix and said something to the effect of: "Not a lot of people know this but, I didn't even want to make the call. The only reason I made the call was because Rick asked me to. Something about an LNG [liquified natural gas] plant," one source said, recalling the president's comments. 2 other sources confirmed the first source's recollection.

Why it matters: The president's remarks suggest he may be seeking to distance himself from responsibility or recast the pretext for the call. White House officials did not respond to requests for comment.

  • Another source on the call said Trump added that "more of this will be coming out in the next few days" — referring to Perry.

Worth noting: Text messages released this week between Trump administration officials and Andrey Yermak, a top aide to Zelensky, suggest that Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, was a primary advocate for arranging the call.

  • There is no mention in the text messages of Perry playing a role in making this call happen.

State Department rattled by impeachment inquiry revelations

"......A department where morale was already low under a president who, at times, has seemed hostile to its mission is now reeling from days of disclosures that place it at the center of an escalating political scandal, according to former diplomats who fear that the turmoil will damage American foreign policy objectives around the world.

“This has just been a devastating three years for the Department of State,” said Heather Conley, a senior policy adviser at the State Department under President George W. Bush. “You can just feel there is a sense of disbelief. They don’t know who will be subpoenaed next.”......

Trump has had a tense relationship with the State Department since he took office, repeatedly proposing to slash its budget, leaving key posts unfulfilled and choosing political appointees over career foreign service officers for ambassadorships to a greater degree than other recent presidents have. .....

“Even a hint of the President using the power of his office to advance his personal interests in an upcoming domestic election will undermine the U.S. in diplomacy and military affairs significantly — especially with our NATO allies, who are following all of this closely with real concern,” ..........

What Putin Got From the Trump-Zelensky Phone Call

The biggest beneficiary of the Ukraine scandal is, sure enough, the Kremlin.

".........This is the necessary context in which Americans should understand the gravity of President Donald Trump’s attempt to strong-arm Ukraine into becoming a subsidiary of his reelection campaign. In one gesture, Trump reduced the survival of Ukraine to a bargaining chip in an utterly petty pursuit; embroiled Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, in scandal and undercut his ability to defend the interests of his nation; and weakened the clout of U.S. leadership on Ukraine, the region and beyond.

The biggest beneficiary of this latest Trump-derived scandal is the Kremlin. This isn’t some theoretical future calculus. It has an immediate impact on U.S. security and our strategic outlook. And it enhances the ability of the Kremlin to keep stirring chaos inside the United States.

Trump is bargaining away U.S. security for conspiracy theories about Ukraine and the Bidens that he hopes will not only strengthen his position for his reelection, but will also erase the evidence that Kremlin intervention helped to elect him president.

It’s actually hard to know which part of all this makes the Kremlin most happy. .........

In this drama, of course, poor Russia — despite documentation of their operations ..... is a blameless bystander in the 2016 attacks on American election systems and the aggressive information operations that targeted and polarized American society.

And the actual villain, totally conveniently, happens to be Ukraine, the nation the Kremlin has been working to smear and dismantle since 2013. .........

Trump unleashed Giuliani, apparently with the support of U.S. diplomats, to undercut U.S. interests and policy — because, again, Trump just doesn’t care if Ukraine, a nation of 44 million people is sentenced to purgatory because of his actions. It is a crippling indictment of his judgment, his leadership, his fitness for office and his grasp on reality.

False equivalencies are the lifeblood of Russian propaganda, an easy tool to exploit bias and distort perception. They are also a tactic that Trump deploys.......

Every time Trump guts an institution, diverts money to his personality projects, labels an internal enemy, violates a norm, secures a job for a corrupt and unqualified appointee, ignores the law, asks a foreign leader to “do him a favor” — every time he breaks a rule and pays no price, he provides illustration for Putin’s expanding primer on “the hoax” of democracy and “the people.”

Putin believes that all democracy is farce, and he has worked tirelessly to make sure that Western democracies believe this too. His propaganda machinery has supported Trump and the Brexiteers,.....

NEW: Judge orders WH to preserve records of Trump dealings w/foreign leaders.

Notable because she could've just accepted DOJ pledge that WH would.

Also because an injunction applied to the president is exceptionally rare

“You really think he was serious about thinking that China’s going to investigate the Biden family?” the Ohio Republican said. “I think he’s getting the press all spun up about this........"
