Trump's Biggest Whoppers

Trump repeats his false claim that people are being tested getting on and off planes. Just not happening. Airlines and airports have no idea what he's talking about.

This is significant not only because the president is saying things that aren't true but because he's using this imaginary testing to justify not taking action to limit plane travel.

President Trump just asked an Asian reporter, who asked a question about China, if she is working for China. When she said she works for a Hong Kong newspaper, he asked if it is owned by China. No, she told him.

The reporter asked a question about whether Trump is willing to work with China on the issue of medical supplies. Trump interrupted her and spoke about the trade deal. He didn’t answer her question.

Trump asked about the scathing HHS IG report on hospital shortages, he repeatedly asks “when was she appointed?” The reporter finds out. Tells trump it was six months ago. Trump says “huh” and moves on. Does not answer.

President Trump is now lashing out at @jonkarl saying he is a "third rate" reporter. Trump angrily said to him, "You will never make it."

Note: Jon Karl is asking about a federal IG report that found hospitals across the country face dire shortages of vital medical equipment.

Trump now quoting Old Mother Hubbard. "The cupboard was bare" - blaming the Obama Administration for the lack of preparation for a pandemic, 3 years into his term

You can argue with @MaxBoot and his judgment that this is the worst president in history, but there can be no argument that this is easily the stupidest human being ever to be in that office. I have taught high school students who could handle this job better.

Trump claims he's up to 161 miles of wall. As of the April 3 official update sent by CBP to @priscialva, it was 151 total miles; 2 of these miles were erected where no barriers had previously existed.

The melting down of the President of the United States at these briefings marks the death of the US led liberal global order that was architected by FDR, built by Truman and protected from Eisenhower thru Obama. What comes next will be different from what has been.

Not the biggest deal right now, but there continues to be a lack of collective action problem in the press corps when it comes to Trump. When he speaks like that to @jonkarl, the other reporters in the room need to call it out, in real time, as counterproductive, offensive, etc...

Technically there is no inspector general for HHS. Christi Grimm became principal deputy earlier this year. She took over for Joanne Chiedi, the acting IG who retired. Chiedi replaced Dan Levinson, former IG who resigned. All of that distracts from what the report actually says.

Trump’s reflex is to attack the Inspector General, but all the IG did was talk to hospital officials and recount their horrific experiences dealing with shortages, expired equipment from the federal stockpile, inconsistent government guidance, and financial catastrophe.

Bottom line, for those who haven’t followed along, the @POTUS dismisses any criticism that conflicts w/his own gauzy storyline-even if it comes from his own appointees-is politically motivated. And the more defensive he feels, the most offensive he becomes.

Trump's idea of journalism is that reporters should congratulate him and ask only "positive" questions: "You should say congratulations, great job, instead of being so horrid in the way you ask a question."

By the way, this is the question Trump considered "horrid": "Testing is still a big issue in this country. When can hospitals expect to receive a quick turn-around of test results?"

Today revealed a lot about Trump's view of government. Without knowing the identity of the HHS deputy IG, he assumed they were a secret partisan, out to get him, because the IG's report told a damning story on hospital shortages. He also assumed the IG was a man -- she's a woman.

Trump says the Democrats "shouldn't be allowed to win" the election because of how good a job he's done. He says they were "artificially stopped" by the virus.

Trump should not be allowed to appear on television to attack his critics and lie about his record without giving his critics equal time to respond.

Trump just said that even though they aren't supposed to - some governors probably let "their favorite reporters" listen in on a call with the coronavirus task force today. He's called it "a perfect call"
