Trump's Biggest Whoppers

The White House and Democratic leaders have been dueling — publicly and privately — over who should take responsibility for extending an eviction moratorium that could protect millions of people on the verge of homelessness.

The White House said its hands were tied by the Supreme Court and that Congress must pass a bill to extend the ban on evictions.

But Democratic leaders contend that the Biden administration can and must extend the federal moratorium.

The White House has mostly operated in sync with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

But the administration apparently blindsided Pelosi when it announced last week that Congress must act to extend the moratorium.

House Democrats issued an unusual joint statement Sunday saying that it's a "moral imperative to keep people from being put out on the street" and the action "must come from the administration."

"They dropped the ball," a senior aide said of the White House.

"Throwing this to Congress on a Thursday before the House is leaving ... if this legal opinion was so clear, why didn't they call on Congress to do this when the Supreme Court ruled?"
