lavenderblue
She was a radio performer, singer, film and TV actress. Two of the radio shows she performed on were turned into 1950's TV series. One of those was a 1940's film series. She was typecast in her roles. She appeared in 3 very famous films. One in 1946, '47 and 1964 playing the same type of role in each film. Do you know her? MilesArcher
I believe that the actress is Lillian Randolph. The movies would include "It's A Wonderful Life", "The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer", and "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte". She was in the "Great Gildersleeve" movie series as well as the radio show and later TV series. She was also in "Amos N' Andy" on radio and TV. lavenderblue
Lillian Randolph is correct, MIles. She seemed to always play a maid. She's one of those actresses that we all recognize when we see her on screen, but not a name that comes to mind. Good work, Miles a complete and perfect answer as usual.Your thread. MilesArcher
Thanks. Do you know me? I had been a New York stage actress before I made my first Hollywood feature in 1929. I had an older sister who was also a stage actress, but she never had a real movie career, appearing in only one short film. My own movie career had been sort of up and down until 1937, when I landed parts in more high profile movies. I appeared with Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, and Dick Powell, among others. In the late thirties, I played the female lead in a movie that was part of a movie series. The earlier entries had a different actress playing the lead. My role in that film, combined with my name, became the basis for a well known comic book character. Later, the character appeared in movies and TV. It was around this time that I was having an affair with one of the top producers at my studio. His actress wife found out about it and put a stop to it. My career went downhill shorty thereafter. lavenderblue
Penny Singleton in the *Blondie* series??
MilesArcher
Sorry, not Penny Singleton. I was only in one entry in the movie series that I referred to. Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that I had two younger sisters who had been singers with a band. They also became actresses. Now do you know me? lavenderblue
I think I do know you- Lola Lane - Lois Lane of Superman fame ? Lola played Torchy Blaine?
MilesArcher
Yes, it's Lola Lane, whose real name was Dorothy Mullican. She had an older sister named Leota who was a New York stage actress. In 1928, she joined Leota in New York to pursue an acting career. That's where they changed their names to the more alliterative Lola and Leota Lane. Lola started making movies in 1929, but it wasn't until "Marked Woman" in 1937 that her roles became more substantial. She and younger sister Rosemary worked together in "Hollywood Hotel" in 1937, and then in 1938, Lola, Rosemary, and younger sister Priscilla were cast in "Four Daughters". Leota was tested for the part of the fourth daughter, but the studio did not like her test, and the part was given to Gale Page. The movie was such a hit that the cast was brought back for "Daughters Courageous", as well as sequels to the first film called "Four Wives" and "Four Mothers". Gale Page was forever to be known as "the fourth Lane sister". Warner Bros. had been making a series of movies about an agressive female reporter named Torchy Blane. Glenda Farrell had played the role in several movies, but in 1938 they cast Lola Lane in the role in "Torchy Blane In Panama". That movie was seen by Jerry Seigel, who used the character as his basis for the Lois Lane character in his new comic book creation, "Superman". He just changed Lola Lane's name a little. I've posted about this before, so you may remember that Lola was having an affair with Warner's top producer Hal Wallis. He was married to actress Louise Fazenda. When Louise found out about it, she threatened to ruin him financially if he didn't end it, which he did. After that he was known in Hollywood circles as "The Prisoner Of Fazenda". OK, Lavender, that's my history lesson for the day. Now it's your turn.

Edythevanhopper
I'll take it..Legendary performer known for her wit and saucy manner had a long career on stage and an occasional film was the first to introduce pants to US. Do you know who?
cujas
If she's not American, it's the wacky Bea Lillie.
Edythevanhopper
It's not Bea Lillie according to books on who I'm referring to and according to the quip she beat out Marlene Dietrich with the introduction of pants in the US . She was a definitive stage lady...a little burlesque, vaudeville and famous for her method with a live audience. Cujas, you know her well but not for dance. She had a signature song.
