Edythevanhopper
This Brooklyn born performer started his career as a part of a touring troupe in the Orient. As a performer trying to entertain with no knowledge of their language he learned his pantomime skills, slapstick and facial gestures that would later make him the loved performer he was. After returning to the US, he tried scratching a living in burlesque. He landed a job holding fans for Sally Rand after one got away from her while trying to swat a fly. Who was this entertaining great?

DownGoesFrazier
I was born in Europe, and lived in Illinois as a teenager. I made a big splash as a film ingenue, as a cute, sexy singer/dancer not necessarily known my acting talent. However, I matured into a fine actress, being nominated for 2 Oscars and 6 Emmys. Kid Dabb
One fine day, I checked into a hotel. I was found dead two days later, having gone into a cardiac arrest. My death was officially listed as suicide since I had left behind several suicide notes, which read: Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck. (signature below)

lavenderblue19
Thanks. This handsome 6'3 leading man of screen and tv has said that he was shy and introverted and terrified of the stage. He auditioned for a stage play and the director told him after reading 3 lines that he couldn't be heard past the 3rd row! can you guess who this likeable star is? lavenderblue19
Yes, James Garner. Hard to imagine this gorgeous, likeable guy afraid of anything. but he had stage fright and felt he didn't have the ability to perform on stage. Good work, Kid. Your thread. Kid Dabb
Conceived as a result of an affair with a family friend, I lived in what I would call 'a very black period in my life in a bad slum area'. I made my Broadway debut on the eve of my 19th birthday to the pleasure of critics. Shortly after my 20th birthday, I was signed to appear with a very big male star in what is regarded as the first made-for-television film. flashback42
I remember that what is "regarded as the first made-for-TV movie' is said to be *Fame is the Name of the Game*, 1966 or so. Maybe that will help someone else track down the bio information to complete the answer.
Kid Dabb
For the purposes of this question, *Fame is the Name...* would not be correct to use as a clue. This is an earlier production filmed in November 1955 and broadcast March 10, 1956 on the CBS television network as a 90-minute episode of the series Ford Star Jubilee+.+ Who is the actress in question?
