Emgee66
I sure am! Your turn, Miles.
MilesArcher
Thanks. Van Heflin played the role of Macaulay Connor opposote Katherine Hepburn in the stage version of "The Philadelphia Story". Now, do you know me? When Gene Autry came to New York in the late 1920's to break into the music business, I served as his mentor. I was a songwriter and musician myself. In the 1930's, Gene made it big in radio in Chicago, and when Hollywood called, he brought Smiley Burnette and me along with him. Smiley was a very talented singer/musician/ songwriter. He was also a terrific sidekick for Gene. I wasn't much of an actor, but Gene found small parts for me in most of his movies at Republic Studios. I often played a ranch hand, usually named Shorty. Do you know me?

Kid Dabb
Could this be Green Acres' Mr. Haney, aka Maxwell Emmett "Pat" Buttram ?
Edythevanhopper
Frankie Marvin played "Shorty" in at least 5 Republic films with Gene Autry, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Guns and Guitars, Boots and Saddles plus he played "short dancing cowhand"...he must have been short. MilesArcher
You got him, Edythe. Frankie Marvin was rather short. He, Smiley Burnette, and Gene wrote many of the songs in the Autry movies. Pat Buttram first worked with Gene in 1948's "The Strawberry Roan". When Gene started his TV series in 1950, he picked Pat Buttram to play his comical sidekick. Gene was also churning out movies in those years and Pat was in most of them. Smiley was still under contract to Republic until about 1953, when he rejoined Gene for Gene's last few movies. Your turn now, Edythe.
Edythevanhopper
Thanks Miles. See if you know this one: As a young boy I shot an owl. Edythevanhopper
Good guess, it's Walt Disney. According to his bio, he shot an owl as a young boy. His remorse led him to personalize lots of little critters. Thanks Emgee, Tom Hanks is going to play Walt in a film about getting the rights to Mary Poppins. Your up! Emgee66
Thank you; didn't know that, but it explains a lot. To continue in the same vein: This actor admitted that once he went fishing and regretted the fact he caught a trout and took its life.

lavenderblue19
Richard Widmark? I thought it might be at first, but it's interesting that besides many film roles of gun totting guys, an episode of I Love Lucy has him showing off animals that he was suppose to have killed and hung as trophys in his home, so remebering that episode I figured it wasn't him. Your last clue certainly sounds like Widmark and his great Tommy Udo character and I knew he had a very long and happy marriage.
Emgee66
Phew, at last! Excellent, yes it's him. He had no problem playing characters that were totally unlike his private persona. Now that's good acting. I gladly hand the thread over to you.
lavenderblue19
Thanks. One of my favorites, excellent actor, handsome man, loved him both as evil and good. next She began her career in America on Broadway in a small role. A year later she was signed to a contract to a major film studio. She became one of the highest earning females in entertainment at that time. When her film career maxed out, she performed in nightclubs, guest spots in TV and had some hit recordings. Who was this multi-talented actress and singer?
