Do You Know Me?

Thanks. Dan Duryea played great villains over the years. Now, as we have discussed before, Eleanor Holm had the female lead in a Tarzan movie. It was her one and only film. I was another actress who was once the leading lady in a Tarzan film. It was only my second film and it was also my last film. Do you know who I am and the name of the Tarzan film? I'll give you a hint. It was shot on location outside the United States.

That's right, flash. Ula Holt played Ula Vale and she was never to be seen in another movie. "The New Adventures Of Tarzan" was originally a serial. Later it was edited to feature length and released as "Tarzan And The Green Goddess". It was so chopped up that it's very hard to follow the story. Bruce Bennett was known as Herman Brix when he made the movie. He changed his name later. He became a pretty good actor in films like "Mildred Pierce" and "The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre". Most Tarzan movies were filmed on studio backlots or in places like Griffith Park. One of Weismuller's Tarzan pictures was filmed in Silver Springs, Florida to take advantage of the very clear water for underwater swimming scenes. It was probably Gordon Scott who made the next Tarzan movie that was truly on location outside the U.S. Later, Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry followed suit.

Your turn, flashback.

Thanks, Miles. Trying one.

Do you know me? Born in the 1920s, grew up in time for WWII service in the Army Air Force. Credited with shooting down two Japanese fighters. Short of an Ace, but still -- two down. Got shot down myself, recovered from injuries, was discharged. // Went into show business via standup comedy. Joined up with a comedy partner; we did well on the nightclub circuit, wound up doing a lot of work in Las Vegas. // Married, divorced, remarried. My partner and I made two attempts at making movies; did not work out well. // Had an affair with a highly popular singer. //

Events take off into some "can not be officially confirmed" territory here. My lady friend had another admirer who had a uh, had a Family. This figure was resentful of my presence in her life, and supposedly my life was threatened. // This person was approached by Federal authorities who asked his help in dealing with some matters in Castro's Cuba. Supposedly he asked them to bug the singer's dressing room to get information about her relationship with me. // My partner and I got into series television with a comedy-variety show that had a good and popular five-year run.

The alleged Organized Crime figure had various conflicts within his Family, and with the Feds, and with his contacts in Cuba. At one time he was in a sort of exile in Mexico. At another he was in Federal custody for refusing to give testimony before a Senate committee. When he was out and moving around freely, he was often in the company of the singer. When he was abroad or in custody, she was often with me. He died in his apartment while standing at his stove and cooking, supposedly at the hands of someone he trusted.

Our TV run ended, I worked on some other projects, then went into a comfortable retirement, in the US and abroad. I was a Type II diabetic, and I made some Public Service announcements about the disease. My death came about due to complications from the condition.

Who am I. Who are these other people?

Sam "Momo" Giancana. Phyllis McGuire of the McGuire Sisters. and the straight man of the Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In duo. On the "no official confirmation" front, slips of info on these matters can be found in the Wikipedia sites of Giancana and Rowen. An effort to tell this story with some accuracy can be found in the TV Movie Sugartime, which make use of the title of the McGuire Sisters' biggest hit.

After making movies in Europe and Hollywood i returned to Broadway and starred in a succcesful award-winning play.

When offered to play in the movie version, i refused, not wishing to tie myself to a long-term contract.

Another actor played in the succesful Oscar-winning movie.
